Wknd Est - Star Trek #3 - $29.4 million - $191 million (Final Numbers)

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

Awful for T4. I still can't believe several people here actually thought it would beat Star Trek.

I think the people saying that Terminator isn't nearly as popular as people thought were spot on. T3 didn't do great, and I think the whole thing with T4 was that it was PG-13 and they hoped that would open it up to a new audience - but it seems to have damaged it more than anything.

"Terminator for the Kiddes" seems like a good alternate title. ;)

T4: RISE OF THE COMMERCIAL AVAILABILITY

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

We're less than three weeks in...at this rate the movie could easily cross the $300 million mark domestic before its run ends.

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

I dunno about 300. 250 maybe.

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

Squiggy's just being mildly pessimistic. Can't BLAME him given how American movie audiences behave.;) But I'm going to go out on the limb, take a leak on the naysayers eating their picnic lunch below and say $250-300 million by the time she is yanked from the last theater where she's playing.

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

Looks to me like Star Trek will hang around a while longer... :)

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

Did you expect it to make $500 million in the U.S.? I think some people are being totally unrealistic in their expectations.

Yes, there were actually some people here, in the weeks before release that said this would happen.

It's propeller hat-wearing basement dwellers like that that give us ALL a bad name and I have nothing but contempt for such unrealistic idiots.

The thing is that Trek will have the loyal fanbase who'll continue to see it every week, which not many other films have.

Boy will it... but that's not the only factor driving the success of the movie I don't think. It plays a substantial part, but without John Q. Public, it would not make even close to 200 mill...

This does seem to be the case lol. Personally, I enjoyed the movie but I think I've had my fill at 3 viewings.

I know, but I pointed out to my friend that Paramount are onto a winner really - the hardcore fans will see it which is 20-30m guarenteed on the opening add to the casuals and its a good total.

Re: Wknd Est - Star Trek #3 - $29.4 million - $191 million (Final Numb

Well Star Trek is #2 all time Star Trek in the UK when you adjust for inflation but there is no way it will catch The Motion Picture, that thing was a monster here...

Star Trek 2009 - $24 Million so far as of Sunday 24th
Star Trek 1979 - $77 Million

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

Well IMAX is screen size, DP is ... not necessary dependent on screen size, right?

Meh. I'll google as time permits.. :p
Digital projection (I assume that's what you mean by "DP" ;) ) is NOT dependent upon screen size. I have a digital projector in my home cinema and the screen size is 64 inch diagonal (small room, so it seems bigger--when the gear gets moved to the larger room in the basement in a few years, the screen size will double but my current projector would be sufficient for that size as well).

Interesting... I suppose picture quality is better than regular film? Otherwise why the distinction at the theater?

190,391,000 or 191,034,000 domestic take as of my last look... waiting eagerly for "official" numbers tomorrow.
In the long run. A pristine film print will look better IF the film projector is properly maintained (lots of moving parts) and the bulb is in good shape (this is a factor for both types of projection0. However, after several runs, the film print begins to look damaged, in the best of situations. A commercial digital projector (unlike home projectors) has sufficient resolution to compete with a 35mm print and does NOT suffer from the physical limitations of multiple screenings (it's a digital file running through a computer to the projector, not a physical object). So the digital copy will stay "pristine" (assuming the lens and bulb are well cared for--not always a given, but far fewer things to worry about than in a film projector).

Re: Wknd Est - Star Trek #3 - $29.4 million - $191 million (Final Numb

Well, did they actually like The Motion Picture in the UK? Or was it just anticipation and then hopes dashed? Judging by the figures, it looks like all the rest of the movies paid dearly for TMP.

We didn't get VHS or anything for years. There were theaters EVERYWHERE then.
