I prefered Nemesis

He was a slave made to mine. He was no more a miner than Kirk was in STVI while in Rura Penthe.

Saying someone is a miner implies they chose it as their living.

Nero is proud of working hard to support his family as a miner. There is really no comparison.

Star Trek has a number of flaws, no doubt. But I personally found it infinitely more entertaining than Nemesis.

Hear Hear!!

The new movie is a breath of fresh air for the franchise. It needed a new direction for the sake of Trek survival.

Nemesis, while watchable, had so many flaws. It was a terrible way to end the TNG run. Data dying needlessly? Geez. The movie should have started with Picard becoming an admiral and Riker heading up the Enterprise instead of Janeway barking orders. The dune buggy scene is laughable. The corvette scene in ST makes a hell of a lot more sense.

I also am not the kind to hold on to things long past. I don't keep listening to music from my youth, like some folks do (It bores me now. I've moved on to Papa Roach and Nickelback :)).

So, Star Trek's new direction is a welcome one to me, and will serve, IMHO, to reinvigorate the franchise. If it had been in the same vein as previous ST films, you could have kissed the franchise good-bye for good.

Just my 2 cents.

Agreed, Nemesis has its moments but overall is a poor TNG film. I enjoyed the new film a lot more even with its flaws.

Tentacle, do you/have you had any teenaged sons?

Re the cars: If they really wanted to float my boat - try the current model Ford FPV XR8 in pristine condition in the 23rd Century, and I'm in. Although I reckon, on the performance and reliability of my 2003 model seduce red 3ltr V6 Ford Escape - that'll still be running in 200 years for sure :techman:

Yes, I admit it - I love my Ford!!!! DH drives an Focus XR5 Turbo. Go the mighty blue Oval!!!
Oh no! Im a woman who likes cars!!!

I sometimes wonder what women feel when they are in the same situation.
That's why our daughter has done ju jit su.

I just got myself a Ford G6E Turbo. The thing is a rocket. I think it probably eats most V8's for breakfast :D

ooh! me want! :D

go back a few pages, and you'll see that the young kirk represents young rebelling teen. Which is what this movie is targeted towards.

Picard on dune buggy is geared towards old man with midlife crisis.

The difference is young rebelling teens dont have the maturity to realize it.
And midlife crisis old man atleast can see through the blatant attempt.

No the difference is that its JAMES T. FRAKKING KIRK DAMN IT!

QFT!!

Tom Hardy the actor didn't make me cringe. What made me cringe was his having to use his talent to try and polish that turd of a character written for him.

I have to agree, despite all my hate for Nemesis, Tom Hardy was probably the best thing happening to this 'movie'.

Agreed. This may have been a descent flick if Spiner and Steward had the good sense to stay out of the creative process intead of letting their egos run wild.

Borgminister, you are right about Nemesis. This would have been an okay average TV episode.

The worst thing was the irrevocable death of Data. It also seemed a lame attempt to be "Dark and Edgy"(that was coming into vogue).

STXI? It wasn't perfect but it was a watchable and easy to follow movie. They did bring back the true ensemble where every character got a chance to shine and then some. Uhura wasn't reduced to saying, "Hailing frequencies open". Sulu and Chekhov got a chance to strut their stuff by not being chained to the helm or quoting the Great Soviet Encyclopedia.:rommie: What about the bad guy, Nero? Well, maybe future Romulans and Vulcans will have more variety in their hairstyles.

BTW someone said there were scenes on the cutting room floor that could have upgraded Nemesis. What did they contain? Are they on any DVD?

The region 2 has a few of the cut scenes, dont know about region 1 or elsewhere. Its character scenes - discussions about having a duplicate between Data and Picard, the crew actually dealing with Data's death for more than 3 seconds etc. Basically its stuff that would have given the film some actual depth.

With the cut scenes Shinzon stops being an excuse to give Picard his own Khan, and is instead a commentary about what happens when you find out you arent as unique as you thought.

But you know, thought provoking scenes arent as important to the movie as watching Picard drive a dune buggy.

I can only assume that the version of Nemesis you watched had been trimmed to take out all mention of B4, and how Data transferred his knowledge to him. Some "irrevocable death"!

When Nemesis ended it was clear that Data would be back in the next TNG movie. (Which we thankfully were spared)

I stayed away from Nemesis in the theaters due to the bad reviews. Plus, I dragged a bunch of friends to watch Insurrection with me. (I have yet to live that one down.)

I actually watched Nemesis for the first time one week previous to the release of the new movie.

Overall, I did not find it to be as bad as Insurrection and I would say that Hardy's performance is what saved the film from being godawful.

I think its true fault is that the "baddies" were to me more interesting than the TNG characters. I found Hardy and Perlman to be compelling and the scenes featuring the crew to be cringe worthy.

The new film has its faults, but overall I enjoyed it. I would say it beats out Nemesis because the crew was out front and compelling.

I have quibbles with the plot to be sure, and as female I found some scenes to be irritating. But, overall it was a jolly good ride.

While I agree that Trek XI lacked a strong classic Trek plot along the lines of Kahn and TVH, at least I remember what the plot was about. With Nemesis, my brain checks out about 30 minutes in and clicks back on after Data dies.

This movie was entertaining, which above all else in Trek is what I want.

I'm not familiar with that model.

The new Ford Performance Vehicle XR8 is also very pretty to look at. An XR8 is powerful enough for a little old lady like me.;)

Shinzon was so pasty and weak I doubt he mined anything.

I dont understand how can you doubt Shinzon was a miner? I mean They showed it in the movie and even had flashbacks to his life growing up as a miner.

He was pasty from spending his life in the mines away from sunlight. As for being weak it probably had something to do with that disease he had.

Vitamin D deficiency rickets? No sun for him to synthesize vitamin D in the mines:shifty:

The problem as I see it is simply this:

In Nemesis, we are asked to believe that someone that looks like a 17 year old kid is going to tangle and hold his own with a respected mature captain like Picard, AND we are asked to believe that this person IS Picard, only younger?

It just doesn't work. Like I said before, it may have worked on Paper, but it didn't transfer to the big screen. The sad thing is that there's simple things they could have done to fix this problem. For one, don't be pretentious in your introduction of the character. What was with the waiting 18hr or whatever it was, and then all the secrecy about who he is, even to the last moment when he slowwwwwwwwwly steps into the light for the big reveal that....gasp!......he looks just like Picard . What was this supposed to prove? Was it some lame attempt at trying to convince the audience that this person was Picard's clone? Why is he bald? Why is he taking FOREVER to get shit done????

nuStar Trek did it the right way, Nero appears on screen saying "Hi Christopher, I'm Nero" bam!! the authority that scene had was amazing, like the guy was saying "Hi cockroaches, I'm Nero", and he doesn't waste any time, he lets all cannons loose almost immediately.

The whole time Shinzon was acting like a brat and emo beeyatch, I kept thinking back to the lines in TMP when Spock said "V'Ger is a child" and McCoy goes "well, what do you suggest we do, spank it?". That's how I felt the entire movie, Shinzon needed a good spanking. The rape scene just made him look even more like a creepy pervert, like the 17 year old in mom's basement with the terabytes of triple x rated material.

Nero on the other hand, even if the character wasn't fleshed out the same, actually felt like an adult. A whacko crazed nut who would stab you while you're looking at him, but adult none the less, and far more terrifying.
