I prefered Nemesis

Tentacle - Actually, it opens with the Kelvin scene, so pedantically speaking, they are not quite on par with each other, in that respect.

I still preferred the corvette scene (ie: showing a reckless Jim Kirk in his youth) - it had more of a context than the Dune Buggy scene, IMO.

I just got finished going back and watching ALL of the old movies (including the bad ones). I have to say that I now officially like Star Trek XI the most. It's close with TWOK, which is the only other Trek film that deserves mentioned in the same breath with the new film. But I give the nod to this film for its humor and overall sense of fun. Don't get me wrong, I love TWOK, but in many ways the film is just a downer.

Wheather someone liked one of the other movies better, is purely a matter of personal taste. My personal problem with Nemesis, was that they intentionally tried to remake TWOK, with the next gen characters. It failled miserably.

Nemesis was not without merrit though. I thought what they were trying to do with the Remens was an interesting concept, but they screwed up alot of it, with the Troi mind rape scene, and other stuff like that.

Everyone hated the dune buggy scene, but let me ask you how is that different from the sport car fell off the edgy scene?

Besides featuring vehicles, how were they similar?

Well lets see...

dune buggy didnt fit any of the star trek futuristic tech
corvette check

buggy driving in the desert kicking up dust
iowa desert check

buggy didnt have any blatant product placements
corvette check and double check

aliens chasing buggy
cop chasing corvette check

buggy driving off the edge of a cliff in a dangerous stun
corvette driving off the edge of a cliff in a dangerous stun check

Differences in intent:

In Nemesis - dune buggy sequence = male midlife crisis by adults who should have known better

In ST11 - rebellious child (not yet mature enough to think through actions - insert any social & development theory you like) acting out against an absent primary attachment figure.

Being female, having a daughter, sisters, nieces, female friends, the spectre of rape tickles at the back of the mind whenever walking alone to my car at night, in isolated areas, when my daughter is travelling on her own.

I sometimes wonder. If I have to walk around at night by myself, I usually feel some fear, and I am 5'7", 225lbs and my arms are 18" circumference, so I'm not a small guy. I usually also carry a flashlight and...errmmm...weaponry lol.

I sometimes wonder what women feel when they are in the same situation.

I would argue that rape is less about sex, and far more about domination and forcing another to act against their will and in accordance with yours.

Well I'm not an expert, but most rapes that I can see happen because the guy thinks he can't get sex the normal ways (usually because he hates women, so he can't even talk to one and try to have a relationship with one) and all the porn they see fucks up their minds totally, and they need to go and act it out for real.

Sometimes it's revenge against a specific woman for whatever the guy in his mind thinks was done wrong to him by this woman.

So sex in a way is part of it.

Agreed. Add to that the fact that a Corvette is a classic icon car and I can guarantee you that if we make it to the 23rd century, people will still own them, restored and in drivable condition. Add to THAT the fact that the Corvette was not standard issue on the Enterprise the way the Argo was.

In both cases its a massive ego stroke.

dune buggy stroke adults with midlife crisis as you put it.

corvette stroke teenagers with rebellious intent.

Now maybe if nemesis targeted their audience towards a teen demographic, it might of done better in ticket sales.

Don't become a parent, then.

So corvette stroke another part of american psyche. The urge to own fast cars.

Tentacle, do you/have you had any teenaged sons?

Re the cars: If they really wanted to float my boat - try the current model Ford FPV XR8 in pristine condition in the 23rd Century, and I'm in. Although I reckon, on the performance and reliability of my 2003 model seduce red 3ltr V6 Ford Escape - that'll still be running in 200 years for sure :techman:

Yes, I admit it - I love my Ford!!!! DH drives an Focus XR5 Turbo. Go the mighty blue Oval!!!
Oh no! Im a woman who likes cars!!!

I sometimes wonder what women feel when they are in the same situation.

That's why our daughter has done ju jit su.

The classiest fast cars are European. It's hardly an American thing.

Probably to do with the vast distances involved (in both continental USA and Australia) in getting from point A to point B.
