Wknd Est - Star Trek #3 - $29.4 million - $191 million (Final Numbers)

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

I've been on the fence about seeing TS... I can't do it. I just can't do it. I liked the first three movies a lot. Christian Bale's had me pissed off since the whole Baleout incident and the reviews are abysmal. Frankly I'd rather see Wolverine which also got bad reviews but... Hugh Jackman never beat up his mother and that's a plus.

Then again maybe I'll just see Star Trek for a third time and avoid the whole TS/Wolverine debacle altogether.

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

Iron Man didn't have two (potential) blockbusters opening on Memorial Day weekend. Prince of the Caspian might be Terminator Salvation, but Night at the Museum II is a true hit.

Angels & Demons will drop much more next week, as will T4, perhaps letting Star Trek wind up in the 2 position next weekend behind NatM.

Wouldn't that be special?

"Up" will be #1 next weekend. All you want out of ST is a solid hold in it's 4th weekend... Which by the way I think you will get.

Oh yeah forgot about that little movie... Well, at least it and NatM are geared more toward children. Star Trek still fills a pretty large niche as a sci-fi adventure flick.

But we shall see how these numbers hold up first.

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

Does Star Trek count as a family movie? If so it could still be in the top three with Up and NatMII. I saw lots of kids at both showings I went to so...

I want it the top three for as long as possible. When was the last time we had bragging rights? ;)

Feels good, doesn't it?

I think it is pretty much a family movie; certainly it is at the lower end of the PG-13 scale in terms of violence, sexual content and language.

Kirk's "Bullshit" is the only cuss word I remember. From First Contact too, oddly enough.

I saw T4 this weekend (please don't throw eggs at me) and thought it was very good. I enjoyed it just as much as Star Trek. Probably the same audience that would liked this would also like the Fast and the Furious.

Thanks to all the fans that made this movie a HUGE success.

TVH had "double dumbass" and "dumbshit" and "damns" aplenty and I'd say without qualification that it was a family film. I'd also have to say that violence-wise ST was actually not as emotionally intense in it's violence as TWOK but rather closer to Star Trek in it's bloodless approach. SW of course is a family film so...

I think you're right. ST is a family film. I wouldn't hesitate to take my seven year old daughter. Well I would because I have utterly failed to get her into Star Trek. I take some pride in getting her into Star Wars, Batman and Superman but...

My one failure stings. It's a pain that never really ends... :(

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

Box office guru or mojo or whatever is saying Star Trek underperformed this weekend, but I still think it did pretty good considering the direct sci-fi competition from Terminator. I think we'll see more evidence of its legs next weekend. I think Up will eat into NAITM II's earnings and Star Trek will continue to dog Term.

Watch Terminator! It's awesome.

According to mojo, the F-Su take is about 22 million.

What does Monday hold...?

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

Then it looks like Trek is running out of steam, I think IMAX must have kept the grosses up more than we realised.

The film is not running out of steam at all. It's in it's third week and lost only 33%. That is very solid. It may not make Iron Man or Indiana Jones money (this time out) but the film has re-established the ST brand name in the market place in a major way.

Don't forget that ST held up very well against T4 in it's first head to head with a major sci/fi genre picture. It is possible/ likely that T4 will have a major decline in it's 2nd week + ST will continue to have small/stable drops.

Stay positive...

The film is days away from topping $200 million dollars in the U.S. alone and easily topping reboots like "Batman Begins", "Casino Royale" and "Superman Returns"

Whatever way you look at it "Star Trek" is a stunning success at the box office that has saved the franchise.

Or, as I like to put it:

"Star Trek 2009" - [Week 3] up against "Terminator 4" [OpenWeek]: $21.9 million
"Star Trek Nemesis" - [OpenWeek] up against "Maid in Manhattan"[OpenWeek]: $18.1 million
