I prefered Nemesis

Say what you want about it atleast it was a Star Trek movie, it had the feel to it that XI is missing.

I would have to disagree and that say that Nemesis was not very good. Asfor the "feel" you are correct. It is hard to explain. You are correct it didn't have the Star Wars feel/plot that XI has. It does seem that Hollywood can't come up with an original Trek story.

It doesn't feel at all like Star Trek. It feels like Berman Trek.
Yes.

That was the point I trying to make in my previous post.

The Berman Bunch did have a very specific way of writing. And it is the biggest reason why Trek died for awhile.

The funny thing about Nemesis is, despite it having an "outside" writer, it was one of the biggest offenders of this.

Oh, and I'll even dare say I preferred Maid in Manhattan. :p

I watched parts of it last night on AMC. It was as bad as I remember.
 SO did I. Fuck it was terrible.

The frustrating thing with Nemesis is that it had all these fantastic components for a great story and movie, but it was put together in the worst possible way imaginable.

with an emphasis on OK. i couldn't even watch it a week or two ago. i rented it, put it in, and soon after i was like, "i'd rather do something else... read a book or go for a walk maybe."
See what JJ has done? He's ruined all other Star Trek movies.

DAMN YOU JJ!!!

exactly :(

but thank god TWOK is still gold!

Watching "Star Trek" brought back the memories and enthusiasm I had when I first started watching episodes of The Old Show.

Patrick Stewart and Data; TNG was a great show. I love the holodeck Sherlock Holmes episodes with Data and Geordi. But, it was always a more reserved and stifled variation of the original show--a welcome detour--but a detour none the less.

The tone of this new film, the energy and humor-the style and heart is what blasted Trek into pop-culture prominence.

If the original show was like TNG it would have been cancelled after two or three episodes let alone being cancelled after three seasons. Like it or not; this version is more true to the original.

I'll give him that Shinzon was a more textured villain than Nero. But then again, Shinzon was also - kind of a rapist.

STXI doesn't carry the "we aim to better ourselves" vibe like the TNG films did, although Kirk becomes highly motivated along those lines, there is no preaching of it, other than him showing up and saying "I'll do it in 3 (years)".

NEM mainly suffers from a few too many cliches and some dodgy plot devices, and what I think were bad editing choices. They have a tendency to edit out character moments because they "serve no purpose". The Vulcan School of Film Editing. Wrong just about every time. Because Worf getting Spot matters. (Especially to a film like NEM :) )

Let us not start a Berman discussion. It is quite clear WHY Nemesis did badly. It is quite clear that Rick Berman not getting new blood was a major problem. And let us not forget that "First Contact" FELT like a Trek film. Not all of Bermans films were shit.

I tried to watch it on HD, hoping it would make it tolerable. Nope, no difference.

My "favorite" WTF was right after Troi was mind "raped" by Shinzon, Picard immediately orders her to endure more of it. WTF?!?!

Only time I really watch Nemesis is just to watch the space battle. The new Romulan Warbirds are definately a high point.

What feel would that be?

Cant describe it, the other films and tv shows just have a "feel" that this one doesnt, sorry I cant be more descriptive.

And Nemesis was a Star TREK movie not a Star WARS movie.

I completely agree with the OP on this. At least Nemesis was a Star Trek movie. This thing that Abrams has made is a good space, shoot em up movie, but it IS NOT Star Trek. It doesn't feel like Star Trek.

My new name for it is TofuTrek. It may look like Trek, but it ain't Trek.

The sad thing is that so many have fallen for it, and will accept it as Star Trek. It gives such a watered-down connotation to what Star Trek is all about. There was no story, no character development, no "human condition" element. It was just a big space battle with a token character from the "old" world we knew.

It was pitiful and it grieves me that the ones of us that did not have the original to grow up on only have this to look forward to.

I personally don't understand why everybody hates nemesis so much. It's not that bad. I don't get it, whats so bad about it?

Because it's just another showcase for Picard and Data. It completely loses focus on any of the other characters. You know, it would be a GREAT thing to make another TNG movie now WITHOUT Data. No trying to resurrect him, just WITHOUT him. He became the focus of everything Trek and it was tired.

Why not?

Except NEM had an outside Director, Writer, and various members of the production staff.

And let us not forget that "First Contact" FELT like a Trek film. Not all of Bermans films were shit.
And see I thought it felt like a wannabe Cameron film.

I'm so glad we have people looking out for us unintelligent babbling masses to show us The Truth. And to think I naively liked the movie. I have seen the error of my ways.

Well, to be fair, MVRojo does have a bit of a point. I think his "fallen for it" remark is a bit much, but the film was rather vapid, entertaining as hell, but still thoughtless.

Are you fucking joking? The character development and seeds thereof in XI were pure gold. Loss, friendship, ambition, arrogance, risk-taking, family... we must not be watching the same film! Haven't you noticed how most of the people talking about what they liked mention the acting, character interactions, and development far more often than they talk about OMG THE EXPLOSIONS!!!1!1! For the 95% of us who enjoyed XI, it was because Kirk, Spock, McCoy et al were spot-on perfect.
