Suggestion for sequel

See, if they made it like the mirror universe I would actually have some respect for JJ Abrams and crew, so that simply cannot happen.

I think a good character that could be expanded on is Garth of Izar, imagine it Kirk and Co. are ordered to go after a rouge Starfleet Captain who was once considered a great Hero.

I want to see a woman villain, I can't really remember any good ones from Trek, except the borg queen.

That would shake things up.

NO That story was already told. If you want to see it I suggest you go buy the TOS season one DVD. Do you have any original suggestions?

Meandering out of the theater today, it did occur me that this could be the beginnings of the mirror universe....
Also no. There would have to be an empire on earth and there clearly wasn't. I kinda hope we never see another mirrorverse story again since, since the first, they only dragged them out in DS9 & Enterprise when they appeared to have nothing else to tell us about. Surely we can expect better.

THIS is a great suggestion. A female villain would have a special advantage over Kirk.

I think a Federation Membership Application story on the Klingon border would be a good story. Not to start a Klingon Federation war or anything like that, but to set up a rivalry of some kind. Klingons are just like then when they first meet someone.

Maybe bring in a Valeris type character from The Undiscovered Country. Bond 007 style where we think the good girl is good, but she is really very, very bad.

Despite whatever villain the sequel has, I honestly think there should be some development on the part of Kirk, specifically him getting his ass handed to him and knocked down a few notches...
He got his clock cleaned so many times in this movie -- and disabled by McCoy to boot -- that I never did understand how he was able to perform all the physical tasks required of him; i.e., space jump, hanging by threads off of every ledge, strangled and pummeled by Roms, etc. He should have been in traction the whole film with an IV replacing the blood loss.

I mean in a more emotional/psychological sense. Something that cuts deep and makes him mature as a person and as a character.

Despite whatever villain the sequel has, I honestly think there should be some development on the part of Kirk, specifically him getting his ass handed to him and knocked down a few notches. There is a difference between confidence and arrogance, and I think this Kirk has crossed the line, something which was not quite resolved in this film. In order for his character to develop true confidence in a noble sense, he has to be broken down by the villain in as severe a way as possible, thus allowing him and perhaps Spock to build him back up again into a better man.

So, what do you think? Agree/disagree?

Agree 100%. If the strength of Star Trek is to remain strong character development and personal drama, it's time--after Kirk's fast rise through the ranks--for both him and his crew to experience a tooth-rattling trial by fire that will make him seriously question whether he is really qualified to be in command.

The nice thing about this situation is Abrams and company have a wealth of possible ideas to draw from. They could pit Kirk against the cloud creature, or they could introduce Gary Mitchel as an academy rival who uses his psionic powers to solicit a mutiny on the ship. My favorite little pet idea is doing a big screen treatment of Miri, where Enterprise discovers an identical copy of Earth with the entire population dead from some kind of disease and has been ordered to investigate and figure out who created it and why. Maybe have Kirk do something a little too brash, like order the Enterprise deep into First Federation territory to search down some leads and ignoring all the warnings from his crew that this is likely to get them into very serious trouble, and Enterprise is saved in the end, not by a last minute ingenious bluff by Kirk, but by the coordinated effort of his best officers moving as a well oiled machine to save their collective asses. Then Kirk has his learning experience that a starship does not run on the Captain's personal awesomeness, but on the combined effort of a really awesome crew.

I'm not sure how much I'd want to watch Kirk's ass kicked, but I do agree that he should be tested as a captain and mature as a person. Right now, he's young and not yet The Legend. I'd like to see a sequel where the friendship and character development of Kirk-Spock-McCoy get more spotlight - the movie seemed more on Kirk and McCoy or Kirk and Spock. I kind of thought about a sort of "The City on the Edge of Forever," as a movie sequel, but that assumes anyone wants more time traveling as part of the plot.

I do like the idea of Kirk realizing that he has a well-oiled machine of a crew - and by extension, how Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Uhura, Sulu, and Chekov become Enterprise family, if you will (well, okay, maybe that'd be more Star Trek VI redux, hmmm). After watching a couple episodes of original Trek, I remember: it is about that really awesome crew!

I'd second the call for a female baddie. That would kill two birds with one stone, giving us a formidable villain to watch onscreen and also she could also knock Kirk down a few pegs. ;)

I'd also like to see more snarky Spock and McCoy interaction. What we got in the current movie wasn't enough for me!

Yes, this! I too really want some Kirk-Spock-McCoy friendship and more focus on how well the crew works together.

Um...yeah. The new timeline changes everything and any Gary Mitchell inclusion would therefore be original.

I didn't say to tell Gary Mitchell's story. I said I'd like to see Gary Mitchell. You could use him and his friendship with Kirk to explore the burgeoning triumvirate that is the vey heart and soul of Star Trek.

I remember reading something to the effect that the Supreme Court will peruse fan opinions and preferences before choosing the next story.

I am actually all for a Gorn Empire as portrayed in SFCII, so long as the Federation didn't go all Starship Troopers genocidal on them and the Gorn fired the first shot.

Alternatively a civil war between the inevitable militants in the Federation that would pop up as a result of the SNAFU in this movie and the noble stalwarts of the Federation would be really cool and a way to inject moral ambiguity into the story while allowing the series and Federation itself to be as they should.

I originally thought Gorn for the sake of having something new and exciting. But the more I think about it, the more I worry they would look silly and cartoonish, and they wouldn't fit with the 'real' feeling of the Abramsverse.

I like the 'threat from within' idea, but I just dread the inevitable arguments about violating Roddenberry's vision - if I recall correctly a lot of people went nuts when the DS9 Homefront/Paradise Lost episodes went to air.

Pretty sure they already have the treatment and that the script will be in Paramount's hands by Xmas.

So it might be too late :(

See here.
