Irritation, ah, yes, one of your Earth emotions. One of my ancestors married a human female.

Quinto nailed Spock. Even though the scene where he turned down going to the Science Academy was a little out of character, I loved the reserved way he told those arrogant basterds to to go f--- themselves. (Who's going to PhotoShop that scene with Spock's finger raised....?)

Re: One complaint about Quinto's Spock,

Not really an issue for me. Pine sounded nothing like Kirk either...

But Spock's characterisation was all over the place... before Vulcan's destruction.
"Live Long and Prosper...bitch,"... well he didn't say the last bit but we all heard it. Nimoy would have delivered the line with much more oomph by not having to make it blindingly obvious he was being sarcastic.
Instead of being bemused by Kirk's beating of his programme he was notably angry... and very petty.
    All off.

Thankfully. I would have walked out the theater if Pine had duplicaded Shatner's overexagerated speech pattern. That's good for the comedy network only.

There's no way he can really try to duplicate that voice (well, short of the above: time, tobacco, and bourbon).

As far as the other stuff goes, if I remember correctly, even Nimoy said Quinto was taking a slightly different look at how to play his Spock than Nimoy did when he played him. I thought it was fine given this Spock was more conflicted with his emotions. But I hope Quinto realizes that to truly portray the Vulcan, like Nimoy knew, less is more.

True. Quinto stated he would emphasized on Spock's posture as a reference (which I think he nailed).

    Re: why THIS spock works

You know, I thought about this as well. We get to see TOS Spock in various episodes show non-emotion before he becomes emotional in say Naked Time, Amok Time, etc. It's probably easier to build the character that way.

And yet, I think if the director/writers of ST XI thought there'd be another movie, that they should've erred on the side of less emotion. I mean, in one movie the Vulcan shows a lot of emotion: kisses a girl in the transporter room, starts a fight with his first officer on the Bridge, etc. I'm always in favor of "less is more." That's a lot of emotion to swallow from a character who *chose* Vulcan, and thus non-emotion and logic, as the race he most wanted to be like. I mean, from the very beginning, with little Spock, we see a guy who's conflicted and has inner emotion than he can never show. For example, him reaching out for his mother during the transporting (as Vulcan is being destroyed) is a wonderful moment -- understated and yet wrought with emotional power. Even the turbolift scene where Uhura stops the lift is powerful -- he's away from his crew and gives into a moment of emotion. I know for plot contrivances, Spock and Kirk had to fight on the Bridge, but did he for example have to kiss Uhura in the Transporter Room? I don't think so.

And quite frankly, there's just personal preference and a lifetime of seeing a Spock delivered so flawlessly by an actor I admire greatly: Leonard Nimoy. Quinto did an admirable job, but to me personally, he'll never touch Nimoy's performance. No matter really what happens.

Re: One complaint about Quinto's Spock,

LOL balls need to drop.... well maybe you should ask Uhura about that...

I can ignore the voice, although I do prefer the deeper baritone...but he did get his mannerisms down pat... On the BK toy he says "you're rescue attempt would be illogical"...and that illogical is lilting at the end...spock woulda never said it like that...but we (I) need to let these minute things goooooooooooooooo.

Let's face it...nobody's (or it's highly unlikely) that anybody is going to do a better job than Nimoy for Spock...so with that in mind I think overall the kid did a fantastic job.

Re: One complaint about Quinto's Spock,

If he had tried, he would have sounded like Christian Bale as Batman in The Dark Knight and everyone would be bitching about that.

A person's vocal tone really can't be changed in most cases. It is what it is. You either accept it or you don't.

I think that's a function of the fact that this is an introductory movie. Sure, you and I don't need to be introduced to Spock, but most people do. We can understand that Spock is actually a deeply emotional person who is in a lot of pain and anger, because we saw the TV show -- we'd see Spock being calm and stoic 95% of the time, and then let out his inner beast the other 5% of the time. You can do that on a TV show that lasts for three years and then in six movies.

But with this, they needed to explain who Spock was, including the emotional monsters he has buried within him, as clearly and concisely as possible. They had to condense that aspect of Spock's characterization into one film and therefore paint him in broader strokes. So we saw much more emotion in him than we usually would.

I'm sure that in future films, he'll be much more stoic.

I doubt Quinto is ever going to equal Nimoy in his performance as Spock. he'll make it his own, though. he's got the ability.

And thank god for that! We don't Nimoy2.0, we need a Spock that fits in with this altered universe. Quinto did a fabulous job.

I brought that up in another thread*. Quinto needed to drop his balls for Spock. His voice was too whispy and soft.

*Er, or in this thread, I guess.

I agree. I don't think he was quite as successful as Pine was, but Spock is a much harder role. Give them time.

For the life of me, I will never understand the tendency to attack someone else's masculinity or maturity on the basis of their vocal tone. Yes, he has a higher-pitched vocal tone than Nimoy. Doesn't mean he's not an adult, or that he's not a man. Hell, doesn't even mean he's not right for the part; nothing about the role of Spock demands that the actor playing him have a deep voice.

I never considered Nimoy's voice important, or important to emulate. But for what it's worth, I much prefer Quinto's voice for the role.

I thought he was nothing like Sylar. No problem accepting him as Spock whatsoever.
