Sylar as spock, did you buy it?

He was suitable, but he didn't do a stellar job. His voice was a really weak point, too; far from the deep, reflective, intellectual voice Nimoy threw around. He sounded like a little boy who was overly eager to please and get daddy's attentions for how smart he was. The arguing scenes seemed really awkward, too, and only served to emphasize the previous point.

I did like his mommy issues though. Anytime you need to get a reaction out of him, just start cracking Yo Mama jokes.

Likewise, Urban's McCoy had me at "Ex-wife took the whole planet in the divorce, all I got left is my bones!"
...they never did explain where that nickname comes from, but it fits.

I read that line in a review before hearing it in the movie, and thought it would come off clunky and awkward sounding. But when Urban finally says it he totally pulls it off!

I also thought Quinto was very believable as Spock.:techman:

With a couple of exceptions, I bought Zachary "Sylar" Quinto as Spock. When he told the Vulcan Science Academy folks to live long & prosper, it sounded too much like a threat, and when he was chokin' Kirk against the helm, I half expected a line of blood to start across Chris Pine's forehead...

But, other than that, I thought he did a great job.

When you watch "Wrath of Khan', do you look for Tattoo amongst Khan's people? When you watch "Search for Spock", do you think of Reverend Jim?

When you watch Shatner's Kirk, do you wonder why he's not hanging off the hood of a car, bagging a perp? When you hear Nimoy's voice, do you wonder why he's not talking about Bigfoot?

Joe, asking

Yeah same here. I definitely saw a little of Sylar's Malice when Spock was chocking Kirk.

But other than that he did do a awesome job. Both he and Pine had hard tasks and they did wonderfully.

so you don't like Spock in Naked Time?
Loved him there, in Amok Time and every other place he was emotional, but like that those are departures. I guess that's the thing I liked about Nimoy's Spock and the way he was written -- we mostly saw the Vulcan side. Maybe it's hard to do that in a movie -- show him without emotion and yet show the emotion he's capable of. Perhaps delving into his mixed heritage would've been better in a second movie? I don't know. I just saw the movie yesterday (got a baby sitter) and I'm still honestly processing a lot of it.

I can say without reservation Karl Urban's portrayal of McCoy was so on the mark for me, that I liked him better than the DeForrest McCoy. Blasphemy!

then again, if I remember correctly, Mccoy was far from your favorite character in TOS :p

I liked nuSpock simply because I liked his journey. Spock has always seemed to me to be more emotional than the generic Vulcan. this movie showed me why. I'm looking forward to his arc in the next one.

nuSpock came off as douchey and with his head up his ass. It wasn't a bad choice for the character dynamic set up for the movie, but it was an entirely different character.

Actually, I thought Zachary Quinto did a good job. I did notice that he had a tendency to half-smile while delivering some more serious lines.

I never watched Heroes either, so this is the first time I've seen the guy. I thought he was very good as Spock. Infact, I thought they were all very good in their roles; Except maybe Chekov, who wasn't bad, just different.

I think Quinto was pretty good as Spock. It's a different Spock for sure but I have no problem liking the new one as well.

Actually I have to say, Quinto as Spock was the only one who even slightly reminded me of the original character. And I do emphasize slightly.

Absolutely I bought Quinto as Spock - now, if I'd ever bothered with "Heroes" and was used to seeing him as Sylar I might have had some trouble, I dunno. But I just found it really weird to be watching Spock and just believing that it was Spock but totally not the same.

Who is Sylar?
I saw Spock on the screen. Two of them, as a matter of fact.

J.

Yeah, umm, isn't his name Quinto? I assume Sylar is another character of his.
I think he played Spock well, though his voice lacks some of the resonance of Nimoy's. Nimoy has/had more of a natural baritone/bass range, whereas I think Quinto is probably closer to tenor.

there were some scenes i thought were really good and then others i wasn't too sure about.

one thing is for sure, his natural eyebrow ridge is a bit thick, he has trouble doing the you know what.

Doesn't matter if we think if we bought it. That all important mainstream audience, the audience that really was responsible for Trek's weekend success, is who matters. And guess what? They bought it. Thanks guys. We, of the nitpicking minority, commend you.:)

He was my favorite part of the film. A great performance (and I mean the word great), that was simply uncanny.

Although it has taken me a little time to get used to the idea of Spock being so utterly goddamn sexy. I saw The Voyage Home when I was 4 -- my first Trek; I grew up with the characters and so the idea of finding Spock sexy was as alien (forgive me) and wrong to me as, say, finding my uncle sexy. But I have come to terms with it. Happily.
