Post 3 things you liked about the film, 3 things that you disliked, 3 things that surprised you about the movie, and a one-sentence summary of your overall opinion. Obviously a few spoilers will follow. Here's mine:

    Likes
    1. Amazing effects for the space shots - the Enterprise in battle was beautiful
    2. The entire cast as an ensemble were great... nobody stood out (amongst the main characters) as being weak... they all brought it, and captured the essences of the characters
    3. "I married her because I loved her"

    Dislikes
    1. Product Placement (Nokia and Budweiser come to mind)
    2. Some of Spock's dialogue, especially the expository stuff, was clunky
    3. Nero could have been fleshed out a bit better

    Surprises
    1. So much comic relief, especially from Kirk. I expected a few jokes but this movie really tried to pack the laughs (mostly successfully)
    2. Beastie Boys
    3. Really didn't think they'd actually leave Vulcan destroyed at the end of the movie. No reset button!

    Overall Reaction
An amazing movie that achieved almost everything most of us could want - critical acclaim, respect for the original without being slavishly tied to it, box office success (it seems), positive audience reaction (I've seen it twice, both times big applause at the end, and an 8.6 on IMDB), the probability of sequels, a renewed worldwide interest in Trek... I really am very, very happy with this movie.

    1. It "looked" and "felt" like Star Trek at its best.
    2. The cast was near-perfect.
    3. The excellent mix of seriousness and humor.

    3 Dislikes:

    1. The fact that the movie had to end.
    2. The fact that I can't even think of 3 dislikes.
    3. Leonard Nimoy looked sooo old.

    3 Surprises:
    1. Chris Pine's acting ability.
    2. How well Quinto could play Spock.
    3. That J.J. Abrams could pull this off so exceedingly well!

Overall: This movie is a phenomenal accomplishment. The entire trek franchise needed this movie to be good, and Abrams more than delivered.

A Spock's father is nice to him in this universe
    B Scotty is awesome.
C NO RESET BUTTON - Vulcan is gone and in this "prequel" anything can happen to anyone so we avoid the trap of every other prequel out there.

    3 Dislikes:

A - Car chase scene was a little cheesy
B - Ice Monster scene was pointless
C - Nero isn't that fleshed out if you haven't read Countdown

    3 Surprises
A - No Reset Button (thank God!)
B - Kirk's fast rise to captain of the flagship (I can rationalize this due to the graduating class being mostly killed and him saving earth, so it's not a negative in my mind, just a surprise)
C - Orci and Kurtzman gave us something great - I was very afraid we'd get Transformers level shit. This must be JJ's influence as opposed to someone like Michael Bay.

    1. It eventual ended and i got to leave the Cinema!
    2. I dont have to see it again.
    3. I can now ditch this Rebooted Money making scam as the crap it truely is without being told, oh so many times "How can you say anything about it, you havent seen it"
    Dislikes

    1. Totally betrays Star Trek, justify it all you like, in your heart, you know its true
    2. Rebooted movies are just an excuse for a lack of talented writers, to come up with new franchises... Im just waiting to see what else they reboot.. Star Wars for instance, what would jedi fans think if they rebooted their beloved Franchise...
    3. No reset at the end to at least salvage star trek. Also that this film exists
    Surprises

    1. Trekkie reaction to this film has shocked me, I cant believe there are so few out there how dont feel as i do
    2. That Leanard Nimoy had no issue with doing the film considering
    3. Mainly point one, im over whelmed by it

I hated this, not only that im saddened that the franchise ive supported has been so horribly mutalated.

I Held out hope for a reset at the end, but alas no....

"We made this film for future fans of star trek"?
    Yea right... Enjoy!

    Yep.

95% of Trek fans are wrong, and you and the minority of other close-minded people are right.

Certainly felt like Star Trek to me :) Summed up with the very last scene on the bridge before the Spock voiceover. You can't get more Star Trek than that!

Everyone's going to have their own opinion, but I respectfully disagree with those who think this somehow betrays Star Trek. I can't think of a more fitting, loving tribute to the franchise.

I am SO sick of people blaming writers like this.

Hollywood DID come up with a new franchise. It was called Firefly. No one saw it!

So what are they supposed to do? Keep making movies no one goes to see? Or should they make Star Trek, Batman, and Terminator and actually get paid?

Stop blaming the writers and place the blame where it belongs: On the public.

    * A really fun movie to watch

The film ENDED. Its not a continuing on forever movie!!!
    Kirks promotion.
    Engineering. Too mundane.

That said, Ive never been a Kirk and Spock fan. This movie changed that.

The embarrassing thing about your post too (and ones by others that do think just like you) is the heavy language. "Betray", "scam", "mutilated" and "overwhelmed" and the "alas" was the icing on the cake!
Also you spelled Leonard Nimoy's first name wrong. You betrayed the entire franchise new and old, with just that!

There are so many misquided errors, so much erroneous thinking, and just plain naivity in this statement that I simply don't know where to begin... LOL!

I think it's because Michael Bay directs with an iron fist and his own vision whereas JJ directs with an open mind and respect for the material. I wouldn't be surprised if Bay was an uncredited rewriter on the Transformers script and blackmailed Orci and Kurtzman to keep them from saying anything. He's that sort of asshat.

    1. The TOS-feel
    2. The cast, especially young Spock and Pike.
    3. The soundtrack, I could listen to it all day.

    Dislikes:

    1. The lens flares! They were really overdone.
    2. "Sabotage" playing on Kirk's car radio. I actually like the song but I felt that was too contemporary and tried too much to be cool. I'd rather have Kirk play some futuristic music with a punch, like Vulcan punk or something.
    3. Mmh, I'm already reaching, how about: the fight scenes were too fast for my taste?

    Surprises:

    1. No reset-button.
    2. The high amount of references to TOS and Trek in general
    3. The original TOS theme as the end credits music. (That brought tears to my eyes, old sentimental me...)

Overall reaction: I'll make it short: great! I still have some of the shots on my mind and I keep thinking about the ramifications by the events of the movie.

I disagree as well, and strongly - this was some of the best Star Trek in a very long time - but I don't know anymore about the respect. The fact alone that this jackass had to hijack yet another thread of fans discussing the film with his constant whining and sense of entitlement makes me lose my respect. And soon my good manners will follow. Just move on if you didn't like it! Watch an episode of Spongebob. I hear they take very good care of their canon!

    Anyway, back on topic:

    I like:

1 - the sense of wonder and excitement in all of the film, but specifically the beautiful (and kind of horrifying) mind-meld
2 - the sound of the warp drive ("Bam!" Woo-hoo!)
    3 - Chekov, just perfect

    I dislike:

1 - that I can only list three likes (because yes, I liked Engineering a lot, too!)
2 - the Uhura-Spock smooching. That was a little too much for my chaste Trekkie heart;)
3 - the childhood scenes could've benefitted from a scene that I just read this morning in Alan Dean Foster's novelization which clarified that Winona Kirk had remarried and her husband was such a bastard that Kirk's brother runs away and as a result, lil' Jimmy steals the car. Would've made Kirk and Spock more alike in their stories as loners, outsiders

    I was surprised by:

1 - the emotional content of the film, how it made me feel sad and happy and ecstatic and giddy and how effortless the film shifted the tone between all of these things
2 - how well the film has been received overall
3 - how close most of the actors came to the originals without ever falling into parody

I'm sorry you don't know how to form a response. But maybe we can help. Can you try to throw out some random ideas? Perhaps we can gather them together into an actual argument for you.

Other than that, I guess just keep practicing your writing. With enough practice, someday you'll be able to respond to people on the internet. I'll still be here.

    1. The humor was back in Star Trek
    2. Non-humanoid species in the crews

    Dislikes:
    1. Viewscreen/window
    2. Starfleet Academy uniforms (what's up with the hats?)
    3. Death of Amanda

    Surprises:
    1. No more Vulcan
    2. Scotty's introduction
    3. Kirk went from Cadet to Captain in no time.

    Overall:
An interesting way to reinvigorate the franchise. I have to set aside years of Trek trivia and accept that the original cast simply too old (or passed) to keep being Star Trek. It was a fun ride and I look forward to future adventures.

:techman:Nice! Also, what the heck does "misquided" mean? I know he may have meant to say misguided..but the Q and G on the keyboard are pretty far apart for a typo.

Basically, it means that---typos aside---the poster that I was commenting on has a very narrow minded and naive view of "Hollywood", writing, and the film industry. Laughable, actually...
