Jeyl's Nitpicks on XI (Spoiler Heavy)

Re: Problems with the film?

OK one on my nits would be that I thought it was waaaaaaaaay corny to have Jim Kirk being born while his father is dying...I mean what a coincidence that she was in labor just at that critical moment...

I also found it unnecessary for a Spock/Uhura romance...it didn't detract (too much) from the film since these interludes were mercifully brief but I don't think it added much either.

That's it ........for now.....

Yeah I agree, waaaaaaay corny. It's not like stress can induce labor or anything.

Re: Loved the movie but (insert nit pick here)

Why would Uhura be made a First Officer ?

As opposed to...?

If you mean they didn't write the story that way, that's one thing. But within the context of the story on film, she did not demonstrate anything that makes her not being appointed an incorrect choice.

I suppose you two haven't seen 'Pirates of the Caribbean'? ;)

I have but don't remember that much. What's the connection ? :)

Well, she had the trust of the crew of the Black Pearl Captain Jack Sparrow hired... she was (in essence) the first officer of the Black Pearl.
At least I think that's what the poster tried to say... ;)

Re: Problems with the film?

It has an oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere, that would preferentially scatter blue wavelengths of light.[/QUOTE]

I agree, it is classed as an M-Class planet, but in the TOS and Enterprise, the Vulcan sky is shown to be red.

Re: Problems with the film?

How many of these 'post your nitpicks with Trek XI' threads do we need, exactly? why not post them in the existing 4 or 5?

Re: Loved the movie but (insert nit pick here)

As I said in another thread...

I had some problems with it, despite generally enjoying it. The Spock/Uhura thing was a definite WTF moment. That and Kirk getting promoted to Captain right away. Would not have happened in any sort of real military. But I have also heard complaints about Nero's ship not being a realistic design given its purpose as a mining vessel.

I did a nice long review here if anyone is interested: http://conventionfans.today.com/2009...t-omg-amazing/

Re: Loved the movie but (insert nit pick here)

The Kelvin had at least 37 shuttles and the Enterprise had 89, or at least that is the number they were assigned. To me the Enterprise did not seem like she could hold that many shuttles.

89? Where did you see 89 shuttles in the film? Or are you referring to their markings? Because that really doesn't mean there were 89 shuttles. My patrol car has a fleet number >1500, it doesn't mean we have over 1500 cars at our disposal. It's just an assigned registry number.

Well, let's not forget they probably lost quite a few captains (at Vulcan) so there's that. Plus, even though they (Bones, Kirk, et al) were in Star Fleet Academy, Kirk was in officer track (proven by the fact he took the Kobayashi Maru) and was not coming out as an ensign.

IS it the Enterprise in Iowa? Is it ID'd as such?

NCC-1701 on the nacelle.

As for Jeyl's Nitpicks.

Cannon goes out the window as soon as Nero attacks the Kelvin.

Captain April can't take command and Number one can't serve board because the ship was delayed by nearly a decade and a half.

I got the distinct impression that Starfleet would be rather short handed after this film - 'their primary fleet' was after all engaged in a single area 'elsewhere' so presumably is not large - and the bulk of their remaining crew ready to serve on replacement and surviving ships will probably come from the biggest source of Starfleet officers unaffected by the events - the Academy. Where better to start than Kirk, who'd already proven himself in the field?
OK, it's not something a "real military" would likely do, but then since when has Starfleet behaved much at all like a 'real military', especially where Jim Kirk was involved?

You're missing a few a's in your way -- but I'll let it slide. I don't give a shit...I thought it was corny and that's that.

Shouldn't those cars start with 01500? ;)
