Poor Jeri Ryan

I don't have see any reason to disbelieve what Wang said about Mulgrew-Ryan an especially Rick Berman. I'd never heard that Berman was assigned to TNG as a way for the studio to get rid of him, but it explains a lot. Judging by the creative choices he made, he obviously didn't "get" what Star Trek was, but was afraid of killing the golden goose by tinkering with it too much. So he followed the wrongheaded edicts Roddenberry issued late in his life (no conflict amongst Starfleet officers, etc.) to the letter and opted to safely retread older ideas instead of coming up with new ones. He ran Star Trek like a CEO trying to protect a brand instead of an artist trying to entertain an audience, but that's how things usually go in Hollywood.

exodus: that's awesome you met her at a convention! As for her comment, well, I guess it's true then. She wouldn't lie to her fans I don't think.

I met Mulgrew at a Slanted Fedora Con. in Philly.
She came on stage and did a ten minute long speech on how she hates the idea of younger women actress getting more parts over older actress in Hollywood. Then when Q&A went to the paying audience she was asked by a fan if the rumors were true about her & Jeri Ryan not getting along. Without hesitation she replied "Yes, we didn't gel. I think she's a wonderful actress but no, I didn't get along with her."

That's from Mulgrews own mouth to the hundrends that attented that day.
If Slated Fedora kept transcripts, I'm sure they'll back it up.
So yes, I believe the OP & without a doubt Garrett Wang.

But...since when is "we didn't gel" the same thing as flinging "abuse" to all the time? You don't have to be buddies with somebody to behave professionally to them. There are a number of my coworkers I don't "gel" with, but I can act professionally around them. That's part of my job, after all.

So I'm not saying Wang is right or wrong - I have no idea about his general veracity - I'm just saying Mulgrew's comments neither support nor contradict what Wang said.

If it relationship was professional I doubt it would be public knowledge to the point fans feel the need to ask the question from both sources. Besides: how else do you take: "No, I didn't get along with her"?

If Mulgrew were professional, she also wouldn't be feeding such stoies by addressing it, Ryan doesn't.

How do the words from her own mouth not support it?

^ I have no idea where you got that idea. It's gossip, Exodus - neither nor more less. Some gossip is true, some if false, and a lot of it is part true and part false. I know a lot of people who, if they heard someone say, "I don't really care for this particular coworker," would interpret that to mean, "Oh, they hated each other," and would assume all sorts of drama.

What you're really saying, whether you realize it or not, is "There's no smoke without fire." But you know, sometimes there is.

So your calling Mulgrew a liar for admitting her own truth?

I even asked anybody to verify with transcripts of the event for their own factual document. You are also more that welcome to attend any event Mulgrew is at and ask her yourself.

^ No. I must be very unclear today. Mulgrew said she and Ryan "didn't gel." Am I quoting her correctly here? That doesn't mean she was mean and unprofessional to Ryan at every opportunity, which is what Wang seems to be saying. At least they most certainly don't mean the same thing to me, and I suspect that they wouldn't to either Mulgrew or Ryan, either.

Well, considering you weren't there & didn't hear her say it & refuse to check for transcripts, you can choose to believe the moon is made of green cheese if you wish. I'll stick to the facts of what Mulgrew said and exactly what she meant by it in conjunction to the question asked. Heaven forbid these people be human or that someone who actually worked on the set as an actor know more about them than we do.

Hey, if exodus said he saw Mulgrew at a con and he said she said that about Ryan, then she did..end of story. He wouldn't lie to anyone. I think it's pretty dang awesome that he met her. If you don't believe him, maybe you should attend a con with Mulgrew and ask her for yourself??

:wtf: Whoa, whoa, whoa! Where the hell does anyone suggest exodus is lying? Have I missed anything? What JustKate is really saying (and I happen to totally agree with her) is that the words 'we didn't gel' and 'I didn't get along with her' don't equate to Mulgrew admitting that she abused Ryan and was nasty to her. If that really were her words (and if you read closely, JustKate is actually doing the very opposite of calling exodus a liar; in reality she assumes that what he is quoting is what Mulgrew really said) then she doesn't admit any unprofessional behaviour towards Ryan. That's just one interpretation of her words.

I'll stick to the facts of what Mulgrew said and exactly what she meant by it in conjunction to the question asked.
I think it's actually the other way around. JustKate merely sticks to the words Mulgrew has said (as per your quotes). You are the one who chooses to believe that her words mean that she was nasty/abusive/unprofessional towards Ryan.

If others on the set hadn't also claimed the same thing, yes I'd probably feel the same as JustKate but they do, so I don't. I also wouldn't keep encouraging to look it up If I didn't think she meant it that way. I'm asking you to factually prove me wrong if you don't believe it.

I choose to believe what she said, in the tone she said it as well as her comments about younger actresses stealing her roles.

Thing is, where did Garrett say that Kate "abused" Jeri? All I got from his comments is that Kate made the atmosphere pretty frosty.

I liked Mulgrew as captain. She commanded by dent of her authority, not because she could out fight every man on board (that’s what ruined Alien for me). But I know how she must have felt when filming with Jeri Ryan: Mulgrew didn't look so bad on the set with others, but she looked absolutely frumpy next to Jeri. I imagine that Jeri Ryan was used to this with other women, and so handled it better.

As with the other convention report, this doesn't go any way to proving/disproving Wang's comments, but someone asked Kate about the same thing at the SF Ball in 2006. From the transcript:

Kate Mulgrew: I will tell you how I felt, and I will tell you the truth. Uh...I was hurt. Uh...Stunned a little bit. A - I didn’t want to see Jennifer Lien go. I’d really developed quite a friendship with that splendid young actress. But B - and equally importantly -based on my... I guess you could say my dictate to the authorities that I was not going to have sex - I wasn’t going to do all that stuff - I really thought Paramount in its forward-reaching philosophy, putting a female in the captain’s seat, would give it a shot, right? Based on the female owning the captaincy. And they gave it a few seasons, but I guess they felt terribly frightened that the young men, who they believe are run by your you-know-what, but I do not... would not stay alert enough without the excitement of a sexual figure. The girl herself acquitted herself very well. Beautifully written part, housed in a beautiful body. She did a damn good job, Jeri Ryan. But I resented the philosophical implications that we couldn’t simply succeed, right? That we had to do it this way. I grew accustomed to it over time, but there’s no point in...in deceiving you. That’s...that’s how I felt. Don’t you think that anybody in my position would feel that way?
Audience: Yes.
Kate Mulgrew: It wasn’t personal. And I think it’s been misinterpreted as a personal thing. It wasn’t at all. It was just a sorrow, and I thought, oh, you know, they’re trying here, but they’re pulling back here, and it’s still too soon. I am not a feminist, politically, but I’m a woman – who’s been on her own all my life. And we have to understand that the day must come when the men will understand completely and embrace that, and they do if we would just let them. So I thought it was once again Hollywood ... uh...appealing to the lowest common denominator.
Q 5: My thoughts too. Thank you.
Kate Mulgrew: You know... it’s very hard for me. It’s hard for me to address this because she was so popular, and so beautiful, and it was such a successful ploy, but I would be less than honest if I told you that in the moment I didn’t feel ‘Oh shit’. Do you know? If only we’d been given that extra chance, because I say - you exalt the audience, the audience rises with you.

First of all, I haven't said nor implied nor thought that anybody here is lying. I don't casually call people liars, either here or in real life. If anybody can point out to me any place where I have done so, please do so immediately and I will apologize, because that is not my intention.

Thanks, NCC-1701 - that is indeed exactly what I'm doing. I'm looking at the words, and the words are "we didn't gel."

How can I "factually prove" you wrong when you are, according to your own post, going by tone of voice? How can I - or you - factually prove a tone of voice?

I think the operative word here, Exodus, is that you "choose" to believe. You may be perfectly right - you were there, I wasn't - but you can't factually prove it either. You believe you know in your own mind, but...how does that help me?

And anyway...the role Ryan actually "stole" (not my word) was that of an even younger actress - Jennifer Lien, who is several years younger than Ryan. I am sure Mulgrew wasn't and isn't crazy about older actresses being pushed out of the biz by younger ones, but since that is something just about every older actress has condemned - and with good reason, actually - I don't see why that can be construed as proof that she loathed Jeri Ryan so much that she couldn't do her job when it required her to act with Ryan. Apparently she did - their scenes together are really good, I think.

And in the end, I have to say that is more important to me than these petty squabbles. Is the show good? Do the characters work well together? If the answer to both of those is yes, then I'd say the actors did their jobs.

Thing is, where did Garrett say that Kate "abused" Jeri? All I got from his comments is that Kate made the atmosphere pretty frosty.

Well, I wondered about that, too. A frosty atmosphere isn't great but hey, I've worked in worse. A lot worse, actually. I just really can't imagine those two sniping at each other for four years, though I guess it's not impossible. But frosty? Yeah, that sounds quite likely.

Okay, JustKate. I apologize then. I took your comments to mean that you thought he was lying. I stand corrected.
Madzilla: I might just watch that youtube vid. Thanks for posting it! :D

^^ Fine, Exodus. You have made up your mind, to the extent that you aren't actually reading what I'm writing any more. I know when it's time to give up.

^ Thanks, Freak - I appreciate your comment.

^ Kinda like I have...what? Given up? If so, then there's no "kinda" about it. You've decided what I'm trying to say, and so it no longer matters what I've actually said before or what I say now. So yeah, I've given up on this particular conversation with you. I've not given up on everything, nor have I given up on having conversations with you in the future. But there's not much point to thing one any more - that's all I'm saying.
