Poor Jeri Ryan

I'm not suggesting he is lying. I'm just not convinced his version of events is gospel either.

Exactly.

I don't know what exactly happened in the set, but frankly; it ain't my business either. I know that I would have also been unhappy about season 4 becoming just Seven Of Nine show, even though new character obviously required more episodes in the beginning. If I am not mistaken, I think Mulgrew has admitted that she did have a talk with the producers to give other characters more to do and they did that in season 5. And I think it was a very good turn of events. Season 5 >>>> Season 4.

No matter what has happened between Mulgrew and Ryan, at least neither of them are appearing some random geek radio interview and throwing shades at other members of the cast or the rest of the production staff. Or at Trek in general. Ryan told in Star Trek magazine that she has zero interest of returning to the role of Seven, but that is about as far as she has gone to let the public know what she thinks about her time on Voyager now.

As for his comments, they're third-hand, so we should all take them with a grain of salt. -- RR

They're not third hand, they're first hand. It was Garret Wang talking about his time on Voyager, you can't get more first hand than that.

But was he standing right next to Mulgrew and Ryan when these events went down? That's what I was referring to. I'm listening to it now and yes, it's a way long, two-hour deal, and the beginning is the host yammering about themselves and their bullshit, so I'll be able to weigh in with greater authority. -- RR

It really annoys me how much focus Ryan's sex appeal gets. I will openly admit it would keep my eyes distracted on a few occasions, but not to the point where I'd lose respect for what was easily one of the show's better personalities. Every episode that had a lot of 7 involvement was one I usually liked because of her, not her bewbs.

Though as much as I want to stand by that conviction, there is too much intent involved in having created that sex appeal in the first place. Why is 7 wearing that silly catsuit? The producers were probably making her voluptuous on purpose to increase ratings or something, which I obviously don't agree with, but again, it's not as though it completely ruins who she's trying to portray. In that sense, Mulgrew is striking me as rather superficial, and whatever thoughts she had about 7 hurting the image of women seems mostly unfounded to me.

Well yeah, he talks about how he'd not want to go into work when he had a scene with Jeri and Kate together.
Besides, he was on the set, he knows what was going on.
This isn't like Jason Alexander telling his story on Voyager after one episode or anything, its a main character.

^Yet it still doesn't necessarily mean that he is describing the details of the events in a scientifically rigor way. He is obviously spicing his comments up a little here and there.

What I found more interesting were Kim's comments on: Rick Berman and his hatred for him; downplaying emotions for human characters; how he became an actor; stereotyping Asians in acting; and on growing up in Memphis. -- RR

Me too. I was quite surprised of all the things he had to say about Berman. Never saw that coming.

^Well, I have a better understanding of all the Berman hatred out there, because Garrett isn't alone in criticizing that jackass. He and the interviewers hit the nail on the head when discussing what made VOY and the other ST shows too identical: the formularization of the franchise. What really irked me was how Berman and the showrunners forced the actors playing human characters to "tone down" the emotions in scenes, because only the alien/non-human characters could show emotion. What bullshit! How incredibly stifling that must have been for Wang and the others. -- RR

I agree with the statements that there was perhaps a need to get something new done with Trek, refreshing it a little. However, they did that with Enterprise and it was a turn off for many fans. So perhaps the change came too quickly after all, or it was done in a poor fashion. I dunno which.

Oh brother, you want him to get out test tubes and litmus paper to test his own experiences or something?

No, I think you do actually. Or better say - you assume such. Or at least that is how it seems to me.

I know that a lot of peple are criticizing Kate Mulgrew for her behavior (if those rumors about a conflict are true and not heavily exaggerated). I can also admit that it wasn't nice in that case and I do feel sorry for Ryan.

But I must admit that I do understand Mulgrew's reactions in a way.

I mean, a good friend to Mulgrew was booted out in a very rude way and they bring in someone who are suddenly made the star of the show, a role that Mulgrew was supposed to have. I guess that anyone would react as Mulgrew did. I would definitely have done that if I had been in the same situation.

It has happened before in similar situations as well. I remember a hockey team where they sold a guy who happened to be the buddy of the star in the team and brought in another guy instead. The star simply refused to pass the puck to that other guy during the games. I think that they did bought back the guy who was sold in an attempt to solve the situation but the problem was never really solved until all involved had left the team.

As for the Voyager thing, those to blame are actually those in charge. They handled this in a very bad way and actually created a tension which hadn't been there before.

Favourite line from that Wang interview had to be "Rick Berman was in MY station! MY STATION! Who made him ops officer??"

Reminds me of how Michael Piller was writing a book on his times with Trek before he died.

Berman himself is doing the same, and the hope is that when it comes out we'll see his POV of things and then this will provoke the others to "set the record straight" with their own recollections and we'll be able to get it from both sides and the whole picture.

As for Jeri, I always thought she looked better in normal clothes on the show whenever she wore them. She could still be the fanservice chick without the catsuit.

Nothing new. Troi became much better as well after she started to wear a regular uniform and was actually treated as a person.

Yeah I was one of those who was initially annoyed by the attempt to sex up the show with Seven. But like many of you I quickly became impressed with both the character and the actress.

And yes, she should have been given a uniform. If Janeway could give field commissions to the Maquis, some of whom were pretty dodgy, what was stopping her from eventually giving one to Seven?

She probably would have rejected any kind of commission Janeway would have given her to retain her "uniqueness".

Or she could have just told off the Doctor for designing her such ridiculous outfits in the first place. "I'm sorry Doctor, but we wear clothes on this ship, not thermal underwear".
