Frasier

I just saw that three parter in the middle of Season Ten. Man that second part was easily the heaviest, serious-est, and depressing-est Frasier episode I have ever seen!

That's odd. Just watched that on DVD today with the sis. :wtf: I agree. A little funny here and there throughout but it was a very heavy set of episodes. Isn't this the only time they did it though? I know there were small parts of episodes in the later run of the show where there would be a serious bit, but these episodes stick out like a sore thumb.

All the things leading up to Niles discovering he had a heart problem were amusing. He had a toothace and he was aware that there wasa very small chance of it being a sign of heart disease. So then he wins twice in a one in 10,000 competition, there's another Niles and Daphne in the coffee house, and his car gets struck by lightning.

Well there was that one episode with the flashbacks of the day Marty got shot. And another episode before that where Marty quietly lies to them about where he's going and goes to his shooter's parole hearing and says nothing. Those were kinda heavy but they never dominated the episode like this one did.

It was a bit weird, and it definitely didn't feel like normal Frasier but I was okay with them taking a more dramatic approach every once in a while. My main problem with the episode is the fact that the jokes fell completely flat, and I think it had more to do with them being bad jokes rather than the tone of the episode.

Fraiser is in the top 10 of my favorite shows....the others are Monk, Psych, Knight Rider (the orignal), the Trek series...

Gotta love Niles' dog, the very, very nervous Italian greyhound. And I'm glad that they left Maris up to our imaginations - although we did actually "see" her a few times: Wrapped in bandages from head to toe, inside a crate, as a shadow on the wall . . .

"She must be home. I can see her hat on the coatrack."
"... Is the coat rack moving?"
"... Oh my god!"

I think Maris can only exsist in our imaginations, though I think Frasier made her "appear" the best by putting a ramekin on top of Niles' dog and saying that the dog looked like Maris wearing a pillbox hat.

Well, the invisible "Vera" device worked so well on Cheers, I'm glad they took it even a step further with Maris.

I loved the Maris fake-out they did in one episode. Frasier is waiting in the cafe to get some information about Maris. We see a pale blonde woman in a headscarf walk in and we all think, "OMG! We're finally meeting Maris!" Only for this woman to walk away, being nobody, and Frasier meets with the woman who really knows Maris best, Maris' hispanic maid.

Which is surprising, considering how far they went to distance Frasier from Cheers going as far as to not having stools in Cafe' Nervosa.

Supposedly, the original plan was that Maris WOULD appear on Frasier at some point because they WERE specifically avoiding a repeat of Vera. They just didn't get around to showing Maris for a long time, and after a while, they started to realize that she was much funnier unseen and merely described than if they actually showed her. (Although, I imagine they still might have shown her on screen if they had found the right actress for her. But really, who could possibly play Maris even better than we imagine her?)

DHP and others also had said that their descriptions of Maris had gotten so outlandish that no actress could possibly play her as Maris had grown almost "reptilian" in nature.

I would've nominated Calista Flockhart, personally. ;)

That was great! I don't know how they came up with that gag but that is almost exactly how I imagined Maris.

Ok, I've come to a conclusion.

Roz.

I think I lust after her more than Daphnie.

She got more nicely rounded... "fleshy bits."

That episode is airing on television right now.

And let us not forget a pioneer in the unseen character genre: Carlton (Your Doorman) in Rhoda.

Who was the same voice as Garfield the cat. Lorenzo Music.

GREAT voice, too.

--Ted

Agreed, Lorenzo Music has a voice thta was made for voice-over work. Didn't he also voice Peter Venkman in the Ghostbusters animated series? Since I posted this morning, I've remembered that they did an animated Carlton the Doorman special at one point. So I guess he's not totally unseen.
