I like Star Trek V

Call me crazy, but I like Star Trek V.

Call it a guilty pleasure. I admit that a great deal of the movie is awful. The scenes with taking over the Enterprise and the stuff on Nimbus III is pretty terrible. Uhura's dance, we won't even go there. Same with Uhura and Scotty. A lot of the humor is forced. The scenes in the turbolift with the dozens and dozens of decks is ridiculous.

BUT, some scenes are just absolute gems. The scene with McCoy, Spock, and Kirk discussing their 'pain' with Sybok is as close to the Trek ideal as you get in a TOS movie. I actually kind of like the idea of an alien pretending to be God, which raises the question of who put the barrier there. I like the scene at the end, classic Kirk/Spock/McCoy reflection on what they've learned and why humans can be hopeful (not the row your boat end, but the end on the ship when they're looking over the planet and discussing the loss of Sybok). The chemistry between Kirk Spock and McCoy is as good as it ever is. I think the denoument is actually fairly decent sci-fi, maybe not terribly well executed, but still the spirit of it is right. And the score is among my favorite Star Trek music of all. I feel like a lot of the plot sort of has the right idea and if it had a few more rewrites would have been awesome (kind of like The Omega Glory- the ending is absurd but the first 75% is awesome and a few lines establishing they were from Earth could have fixed the end).

So I admit, the effects are bad, much of the movie is just silly, and it doesn't have quite the energy that the other movies do, and it's probably my least favorite of all the movies except Insurrection, but I feel like at the end of the day it still has that Star Trek spirit that we all look for; it just feels right to me. Thoughts?

You're no crazier than any of the rest of us. :)

I like it, not as much as I like most of the other films, but I do like it despite its many annoying flaws, because I feel like it captures the feel of TOS rather well, perhaps better than any of the other movies except maybe TMP do.

For similar reasons, I like 'Generations' because it feels like TNG.

I thought the "secret pain" aspect was completely stupid. Also, "god" being exiled on that planet reminded me of the slime monster that killed Tasha Yar in "Skin of Evil."

It is better than people give it credit for. People get caught up in the details about how the Enterprise could get to the center of the galaxy, but (iirc) I remember in TOS the Enterprise actually LEFT the galaxy on a couple occasions.

In all, I thought the mystery/wonder was very in keeping with the feel of TOS (as opposed to many of the other films, which were more geared toward a movie audience, if that makes any sense)

Quite enjoyable, which is what counts the most. Yeah, there are lots of technical problems I don't care about.

These "I like STV" threads are getting almost as popular as the "NEM is shit" threads. I approve of this trend.

I agree. I suppose we could say it's more of a Season 3 than a Season 1 episode by that analogy. But for instance, the humor of STV is oft-derided, but the series was of course MUCH campier (my avatar no small testament to that) - the only thing STV was missing in that regard was that mirthful little tune played on clarinets and flutes whenever a funny came up in TOS.

I like both STV and INS, maybe for similar reasons.

I couldn't have said it better. I like Trek V too despite the problems. It really has some very positive things going for it like the sense of family and it is overall a very enjoyable and fun movie.

I know many people don't like Generations but I like that movie also.

Its a fun romp movie that does not take itself too seriously and along the way entertains us with some old friends........what more could you ask for.

I love STV.

I like it too, I think it's great fun, and has some of the best Kirk-Spock-McCoy moments in the whole franchise.

You're not alone. I think Star Trek V is great fun. The Kirk-Spock-McCoy relationship has never been better defined.

I've always loved it.

And get this: I laugh raucously every time Scotty bumps his head. It's a great scene!

Like I said in another thread....

STVTFF may have shit jokes and awful special effects but I think the criticism it comes in for is way too harsh. It's a movie that continues the core tradition of Star Trek, well certainly TOS anyhow, and that's the exploration of the human condition. I think the scenes concerning the internal emotions of the big three are absolutely excellent and I very much wish Shatner had been given free reign to make the movie how he wanted. In my view the TNG movies never recaptured the exploration of human issues the way the TOS movies did (except perhaps TMP).

Your avatar is also from an episode that STV is very similar to. And I for one like STV in the same way as "The Way To Eden", not the highest art they ever produced, but entertaining for sure. It's the worst of the TOS movies, but I like it better than 75% of the TNG films.

Agreed indeed. (And the TNG ovies are a whole other kettle of fish...)

I enjoy it, warts and all.

Just like every Star Trek episode and film ever made.
