Starting A Business?

I have always wanted to start my own business, be my own boss. I have ideas of what I want to do however getting the money to do this is the big issue. Any suggestions on what will help me?

Business plan. Not in an afternoon, more like in a year. This is more of a concern than money. Money and ideas do not a business make. Plan and persistance do.

Don't quit the day job.

Do what will truly interest you for years to come.

Good luck to you.

Oh and try SCORE.

A year? By the time, you've worked out your business plan, it's out of date. I've started a number of businesses (they've all made money bar one), hell I've just started another one recently - a on-line tutoring business.

The key to all of my start-ups was that the costs were kept low - it's even easier those days because if you are offering some form of service, you can run the whole company from a single pc in a spare bedroom.

It's a bit hard to advise the OP without a bit more detail - I would say the following however, if you can make it work, being your own boss is great, no more going to an office and sucking the bosses cock with a smile as a wage slave.

I literally laugh in the morning when I watch my neighbours run around like rats to rush to the office.

I don't know if I should share this. You see I have a Roulette system that I have devised that throughout all my studying no one else seems to have discovered. With my Roulette system you cannot lose and you always leave the table with more money than you had to start with.

I don't know whether to share it or not. You see, if word got out about my system the casinos would ban the use of it, infact if everyone started using my system and the casinos didn't act quick enough to ban it the worlds casinos could quite literally become bankrupt over night. :shifty:

start with a buisness plan, get a guide or look up a sucessfull one relevant to what you want to do and use that to get the ball rolling, I'm working on one now, I'm going to use my knowledge of networking to enhance your lives

You aren't one of those people who constantly spam me on twitter with "my networking plan will change your life!" are you?

Business plan... I found that to be dead simple. I planned out one year, two years, five years and 10 years.

However the banks are reluctant to loan money for manufacturing concerns, it's all part of the grand conspiracy to drive manufacturing offshore and create a welfare state.

:p Actually I kid about that, but they are reluctant to loan money to manufacturing concerns because most of the current generation of bankers around here only understand "e-commerce" and "service sector" type businesses.

Had better luck getting a loan from a small bank in New England, they loaned me $3,500 as of two weeks ago. Now that the wife is home we're looking to add capabilities to my workshop.

heh, I wish my buisness needs were going to be that simple, I allready have a few investors that will cut down my overhead, but i'm going to need about $50,000 in startup capital

A lot of businesses get their start when the owner does his work on the side, in his free time. It's a good way to get over the learning curve , to network, and iron out the wrinkles. Many people believe that borrowing money is the only way to start; however, IIRC, 80% of all new businesses fail within the first two years. Then, you're on the hook for that initial loan. Businesses today are suffering because during the past 10 years or so, we had a drunken orgy with easy credit and no one planned for the (eventual) lean times we are now experiencing.

Start it slow and let it grow.

$50,000 would be nice but that's the best I can get at the moment. I can put that $3,500 to work and turn it into More Money in short order...

Or at least I think I can. :) We'll see. I still have my day-job, she still has hers.

I'm running a small machine-shop out of our house that specializes in pipe-fittings and small non-critical parts, short-runs.

Example, say you are restoring an old radio and you need a Bakelite roller for the tuning slider... I can make that for a fraction of the cost of a Big Company. Other examples, I make a line of fish-tank filters for Crazy Catfish Lady (sold locally, she wants to expand), and I make dozens of small rollers, fittings, standoffs and indescribable widgets per week.

Currently I have a very small lathe and a very very small mill-drill. Next purchase will be a decent mill and a sheetmetal fabricating machine.

I've showed you mine now lets see yours Sephiroth. :D What are you planning on doing?

I'll tell you when I get my buisness launched, but, basically, I saw an oppertunity to integrate some of the spec of this project i am working on for Los Alamos natn'l labs to the private sector, in a way that will cut down the number of bills people will have to pay

Odd, normally machinists are considered anti-social and nerdy. :p

Really going to drag out THIS chestnut again? It's been debunked how many times now? And if it's as effective as you claim, why are you still barely scraping by working for the man?
