Starting A Business?

I'll tell you when I get my buisness launched, but, basically, I saw an oppertunity to integrate some of the spec of this project i am working on for Los Alamos natn'l labs to the private sector, in a way that will cut down the number of bills people will have to pay

So you're going to send people water and electricity via cellphone? :D

well, i HAVE figured out how to transmit electricity safely without wires, water on the otherhand is a bit trickier, i can't find a super soaker big enough

So it's a question of bandwidth?

:D

I started a business last month, after about a year of preparations. A lot of blood, sweat and tears are expected until the company (hopefully) will be profitable. Luckily, I was unemployed for a long time before I started the company, so I get some money for about six month from the state. As help to start it up.

What I do? I sell Swedish and English audiobooks on the Internet. A big hobby turned into a business.

I encourage everyone who wants to start a business to do so. It's quite rewarding and fun at times.. :)

bandwith...and the lack of women wearing white t-shirts
*hint* Live in a college town like I do. Plenty of stock :)

Hungarian: [reading from a English-Hungarian dictionary] I vill not buy this record, it is scratched.
Tobacconist: Sorry?
Hungarian: I vill not buy this record, it is scratched.
Tobacconist: Uh, no, no, this... uh... tobacconist.
Hungarian: Ah! I vill not buy this *tobacconist*, it is sratched.
Tobacconist: Uh, no, no, tobacco... um... cigarettes.
Hungarian: Ja! "Ci-ga-ret-ta"! Uh... My hovercraft if full of eels.
[pause]
Hungarian: My hovercraft
[motions "cigarettes"]
Hungarian: is full of eels.
[motions "matches"]
Tobacconist: Oh! Matches! Matches.
Hungarian: Ja! Ja, ja. Uh... do you *WA*nt... do you *WA*nt to come back to my place? Bouncy, bouncy!
Tobacconist: I don't think you're using that right.
Hungarian: You great poohft.
Tobacconist: Uh, that will be 66 please.
Hungarian: If I said you had beautiful body, vould you hold it against me? I... I am no longer infected.
Tobacconist: M-may I?
Hungarian: Ja! Ja!
[gives book to Tobacconist]
Tobacconist: Costs 6 and 6... costs 6 and... ah, here we are!
[Tobacconist says something in Hungarian, causing the Hungarian to punch him in the face. A police officer comes rushing into the store]
Police Officer: What's going on here then?
Hungarian: [to police officer] You have beautiful thighs.
Police Officer: What?
Tobacconist: He hit me!
Hungarian: Drop your panties, Sir William, I cannot wait till lunch time.
Police Officer: [angry] RIGHT!
[Hungarian dragged away by police officer]
Hungarian: My nipples explode with delight!

IN addition to the advice about the business plan, get in touch with your local small business administration office and take some of the free classes. They will tell you a lot more than we can and they will help you to a degree in getting started. Plus you can tap the experts at SCORE (service corps of retired executives) for hints.

Now my advice, besides the business plan (and you can do it your self, you dont have to hire someone) is this: 1) Incorporate as an LLC. 2) Marketing, marketing, marketing. Study it. Market your ass off. Dont neglect it.

Also network network network in addition to market market market. Most of my initial gateway customers were friends, friends of friends, and church people.

Really going to drag out THIS chestnut again? It's been debunked how many times now?

I have never EVER divulged my secret Roulette system to ANYBODY so I think you'll find it's been debunked ZERO times.

kthnxbye
Hence why it has never been debunked

:cardie: wuh? Scout said it HAD been debunked, that's what that saying " It's been debunked how many times now?" means. :cardie:

If it hasn't been debunked then what's the problem?

And if it's as effective as you claim, why are you still barely scraping by working for the man?

Because although you win money it's not a huge amount unless you go with plenty, the system is more along the lines of play once a day, win £40 to £100 and then call it a day. I could put perhaps £2000 pound on and win big but the truth is that there's still a small percent chance of losing even though the odds are dramatically in your favour. Now if I did lose the £2000 If I played again the odds are soooooooooooooooo far in my favour that I would win but I don't have £2000 to stick on again cos I have bills to pay.
You see it's nothing like that system where you keep to one colour and just double your bet, you see the odds are only 50/50 with that and it's been known for the same colour to come out 30 times in a row so that system is no good if you're betting on the wrong colour. My system has odds so fantastic that if you went with enough money you COULD walk away and laze on a tropical island but it's better to just stick to winning £40 to £100 a day and not be too greedy and you're getting an extra week wage depending on how much you put on.

This is all good advice my escort business should be a huge success!:guffaw:

Actually, I wanted to open a small restaurante...there are many around ofcourse but I was hoping to avoid alot of the hang-ups I've noticed and hopefully offer something different.

I have always wanted to start my own business, be my own boss.

Honestly, it's one of the best things you can do.

I run a couple of businesses in my spare time with the aim of scaling them up and starting another couple in order to retire from the day job (well, knock it down to a day a week, just for fun). Basically, I'm aiming for a portfolio career with several different things on the go, to keep me interested and motivated.

You need commitment, drive and a willingness to put in the time when it's needed. If you have good ideas in combination with the above, GO FOR IT.

I also entirely agree 100% with what JoeZhang says about keeping start-up costs low. The other thing is not to expand too fast, resulting in a drop in service/quality because of insufficient capacity. Pace yourself properly.

Do you have food service management experience? If not I suggest this. Find a city far far away (say 200 miles) and apply. But let them know you are looking for an apprenticeship. You wont make as much, but they should employ you in all fascets of the business and that will prepare you like nothing else. You'll be amazed at how many places still do this. But still go to the SBA.

I've always wanted to open my own restaurant or cafe. It's all thanks to watching Gordon Ramsay all the time.

I have experience and I know someone who owns a small BBQ place and he old me it is easy once you get going, he has alot of loyal customers...it is a small place though.

I just want something that is mine with the potential to grow, I like food and have been in the business most of my adult life.

*I'm still looking into an escort business ;)

Man, the restaurant biz is one of the hardest you could pick. Insane capital costs, major running costs, demanding bureaucracy, disturbingly long hours, and a massive failure rate. Good luck! :D

(are you sure you don't want to start with something smaller and scale up?)

The best way to make sure a restaurant will be successful would be to make sure that there's and upstairs function room for people that would like you to cater for their Birthday parties or wedding reception. If you throw good enough functions then word of mouth will bring in a heck of a lot of extra business. Whilst you're raking in the money upstairs with functions you're raking in the money downstairs in the main restaurant area.

What you then don't want is Gordon Ramsay turning up at your doorstep as part of the new series of Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares. ;)

Excellent point. Food service is probably the roughest business to get into. Failures abound. My neighbor has years of experience, yet still has cut through ownership of three restaurants in the past year.
