Apparently, there are too few women taking the poll (or in this forum at all) for the result to be of any value.

I voted yes, since I like her more than not and there wasn't an intermediary option. It's not without reservations, however.

I like Janeway fine, but I'm getting sick of TrekLit threads about Janeway.

Then don't click 'em.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

Right now I'm not sure even the male results are statistically significant. We need a MUCH bigger sample size, both male and female, to get this poll to work.

^ Funny, considering that when the same argument - or some variation of it - is put forth as reason not to get too excited about fan "concensus" in general, particularly on internet message boards, it's derided for being "dismissive."

So, pardon me while I laugh at the irony. :)

I haven't voted in the poll, because (as Trent points out) there's no middle option. I'm in the camp that finds Janeway's portrayal onscreen to be inconsistent, so I don't always have a problem with her -- but I certainly can't like her all the time, either, and a few particular episodes put me firmly in the "throw her in the brig" camp. I'd certainly take her over Archer any day, though.

FWIW, I'm straight, male, and feminist. The problem with Janeway isn't that she's a woman, it's that she's inconsistently and sometimes badly written. It took TPTB some time to get a solid and consistent characterization for Picard and Sisko, but they eventually clicked. I don't think Janeway really clicked. With Archer, it's hard to tell if it's the writing or the acting, but... oy.

I think that's part of why I have a hard time buying Janeway as a captain. Even a business manager needs to have a fairly strong idea of what their management style is going to be--and you should have that well before reaching the rank of captain.

The inconsistency she ends up with reminds me...well...more of ME. But MY situation is more comparable to Ezri Dax, in age and responsibility level: it's my first management job, so of course I'm having to find my feet. But an O6 shouldn't be still finding her feet--she should've had departmental responsibilities beforehand. The only thing that I could see being a new challenge is the external diplomacy...having to learn to work with the Maquis forces and deal with non-Federation species. But even her management of Starfleet forces came off as highly contradictory and lacking any sort of underlying philosophy.

The age I was when I was initially watching VOY, I couldn't have articulated it that way. But now that I'm older I feel I remain justified in my impression and am better able to express why.

Archer's character suffered from similar problems. In HIS case, I would say a certain degree of awkwardness should have been expected. His having trouble working with T'Pol and Phlox, as well as the other non-humans, makes sense to me. But I would have thought he'd have stronger management skills when it came to the HUMAN crew.

In that particular case, I think it was down to a combination of the writers not knowing what to do, and of miscasting. Don't get me wrong. I LOVE Bakula's work in a number of other projects. But he's more a family-film, feel-good type actor. In what I think should've been a grittier setting...it just didn't click.

Katie Mulgrew, in contrast...I felt like her acting skills were pretty decent; the trouble was wholly down to the writing.

I was just getting started on the Janeway threads. I've been here 8 years on Friday; and after most of that time seeing Janeway ripped or ignored, it's nice to see some serious discussion for what -- a couple months? I hope nobody puts a chill on it.

So don't post in the thread you're not interested in. It's that simple. :p
Wah! I'm feeling unwelcome by this board! Wah!

Get over it. ;)
:guffaw:I'm sorry, but this is seriously hilarious to me.
As for the poll, like her/straight male.
I'm another one who does like her in some episodes but can't stand her in others, mostly thanks to the inconsistant writing.
As for where she'd stand in relation to the other on-screen captains, I'd rank them
Sisko
Picard
Kirk
Janeway/Archer

Wow... I need to think about this... I kinda like her... I didn't hate her... but man did I think she did some stupid things... like, or not...

I also am getting a bit sick of her... to be objective, I'll stick to what I thought when I watched VOY...

I could care less about there being a woman in command.

I dug Rachel Garrett, for instance.

But Janeway I felt was inconsistent and horribly written. The character never made me think she was a captain. And SHOULDN'T she be in over her head out of science and exploration action? There's NO mention made of her ever having tactical training, as far as I recall.

And straight male here.

I didn't like Janeway, particularly in the later seasons, because of inconsistent characterization and bad writing. I do much prefer her to Archer, though.

I do enjoy seeing women in command, but we've had so many better examples in TrekLit - Rachel Garrett, Elizabeth Shelby. I'm really liking Captain Dax.

I like Janeway just fine. I like all of them just fine, actually. Well, I am "meh" on Archer, and as for Kirk, he was the original and as such must be honored, but God, he was such a horny guy. I can't help but like him since he was the lead character in one of my all-time favorite shows, but my feelings are nonetheless definitely mixed.

Rachel Garrett (Yesterday's Enterprise) and Elizabeth Shelby (Best of Both Worlds I) were both creations of TNG season 3.

I would think tactical training would be required of a command officer, whether they mention it on screen or not.
