The KC Chief's dickheaded, boneheaded, "(my) money before talent" Carl Petersen is resigning -in the wake of the Chief's worst season ever.

WAHOOO!!!!!

Word out of KC is that they've hired Scott Pioli from the Patriots as their next GM. Can anybody here tell me anything about Pioli?

He's Bill Parcells' son-in-law, and has been associated with Bill Belichick ever since Belichick was coaching in Cleveland (Pioli was hired as a director of player personnel overseeing college talent evaluations), and he's been with the Patriots since 2000.

While Belichick has held the final say on personnel matters on the Patriots, he's deferred to Pioli in almost every respect with regard to building the team (I believe Belichick has only asserted that ultimate control regarding the draft, letting Pioli handle free agency and trades). Pioli's got an extremely astute football mind.

However, he has a boner for Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz (they worked together in Cleveland, and have remained close friends since). Whether Ferentz would be a capable replacement for Herm Edwards, who is certainly a goner, is a topic for discussion. There's also been talk that Steve Spagnuolo would be a leading candidate to take over in Kansas City, but he's still a leading candidate for the Jets' vacancy (and the Lions desperately want him).

Well I see it as a positive sign that he's coming from a solid, winning franchise. The Chiefs franchise has really fallen into disarray from the top down. As much as it pains me to say this, I really believe Mr. Hunt, God rest his soul, just wasn't up to the task of running a NFL franchise in the last years of his life.

Carl Peterson can be credited with reviving the fan base in the late 80s and early 90s and turning game day at Arrowhead into the experience it has become. Unfortunately he peaked in 97 (I say that despite the 2003 season under Vermeil) and should have left with Schottenheimer.

I've heard these rumors too about Ferentz and Spagnuolo and I don't know that I want Ferentz. Spagnuolo might be an interesting choice although I think I would have preffered Denver's new coach (His name escapes me at the moment, but he was the offensive coordinator for the Patriots.) In any event, surely one of Pioli's first moves will be to can Herm. If not, it will certainly dampen my enthusiasm for him a lot.

Well, the storylines created by this will feed a media frenzy for the next year or two.

As someone who loves Shanny, I will have a hard time not rooting for the Chiefs (other than when they play the Broncos).

I figured this was coming it was obvious to just about everyone.

I would've liked to see Herm given a shot, but Pioli I'm sure wants to build his own staff.

Well the jury is still out on the "Shanny to KC" angle. But Herm is definitely gone. :techman:

The only member of said jury is Chris Mortensen, who's about as reliable as the guy who writes the "Devil's Skull Unearthed!" articles for the supermarket tabloids.

Indeed Mortensen was way off the mark. Todd Haley, former offensive coordinator for the Cards was named the head coach of the Chiefs today.
