The Special ones...

Geordi Leforge was a big step for Star Trek because it showed that even those with handicaps will, and can, contribute to the good of all (awwww..didn't that just make you all tingly inside?)...

What have been some other 'special' characters that had a unique 'difference' (and I don't mean super strength) who were also good characters....

Zefram Cochrane was apparently a greedy, drunken asswipe, but his invention turned out pretty well--and, after that, so did he.

My all-time favorite imperfect person: Reg Barclay. He was brilliant and he stammered. He was gentle and a total geek with females. He fantasized and used holodecks in silly ways like ordinary humans. And he gave Voyager the ability to phone home.

...
and Reed from ENT.

He was the first openly gay tactical officer in Starfleet.
If he was, he was bi. He thought T'Pol had a "nice bum". Which she did. :D

Of all the things to comment on he goes for the rear? :p

Although not Starfleet or the most sane, Suder wasn't the most mentally stable officer and ended up being a hero. Plus you had the Jack Pack each suffering from their own side effects from the genetic modifications who ended up working as advisors.

The only others I can think of that may fall into the category woud be the claustrophobic Garak and one eyed warriors Martok and Chang.

Melora was the first that came to mind, and she's already mentioned. I may be wrong as my memory likes to play tricks on me - but wasn't that initially created for Dax?

There was Ambassador Kolos, the Medusan, in TOS' "Is there in Truth no beauty?". He was a brilliant Ambassador and Navigator; but of unbearable ugliness to humans. You'd have to guess from the visual effects that any person that looked upon the Medusans was put in a permanent state of grand mal seizure.

They originally intended the Melora character to be a DS9 regular, in place of Dax, but decided that the visual effects for a lot of the neat things they'd want to do with her would cost too much. So they rolled up a Trill character ;), and played with her instead.

Thats what I thought, cheers :) It shows how lazy I am today though as I've got the making of DS9 book within arms reach

I thought Lal was a special one..she seemed not so perfect, like Data seemed to be...watching her fit in, or not fit in actually, was very well done.
