Dead Mans Chest Question

So here I am re watching Dead Mans Chest again for purhaps the 9th time and I still can't bring myself to understand what Mark Jack left on Beckett.

Is it just the compass or was there something more meaningful?

Firstly, this thread should probably be moved to SF/F.

Secondly, the "mark" that Jack left on Beckett was never made clear, not even in At World's End. Supposedly, the writers came up with some backstory about how that occurred. 13 years ago, Beckett hired Jack to transport some cargo. Jack agreed until he learned that the cargo was slaves. He freed the slaves, so Beckett had his ship, the Wicked Wench, burned and sunk. This was where Davy Jones came into the picture. He raised the ship from the depths for Jack. Jack, seeing that the fire had scorched the wood black, rechristened the ship the Black Pearl.

I find that a weak explanation. Beckett holds a deep grudge against Jack because Jack cheated him on a business deal?

I prefer my friend's theory. You know how Jack is always going on about eunuchs?...

Don't try to make any sense of either of the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels. They're utter, non-sensical, written on a moments whim shite.

Actually, I have watched the second and third movies a number of times and if you do that, well they actually make a lot of sense and show a lot of clever writing.

But the problem is why make your audience do that? Why expect them to have to watch the movie 10 times so they understand it???

They freely admit the movies were written on the fly.

The whole 2nd act of Dead Man's Chest could be removed and it wouldn't make a lick of difference to anything.

The trick is to just have fun with them rather than to try to understand them. And Johnny Depp makes them a LOT of fun. If they eventually make sense anyway, BONUS!

Actually, I've been in exactly the same situation that Ted Elliott & Terry Rossio were in when they wrote the sequels. And we've both learned the same lesson-- don't start filming part 2 until after you've finished writing part 3! Otherwise, part 3 will just end up confusing people.

True they are are much better to enjoy and not think about too much...

no doubr, you could cut out everything from when the kraken first attacks to when it comes back again and you wouldn't miss a darn thing
