Tons of New Kelvin Info! (Including crew pics)

You know, even though I KNEW Kim from "Home and Away" was playing George Kirk, it STILL made me angry when I saw his picture.

For Americans, this would be like Susan Lucci being cast as Betsy Ross or one of your other highly vaunted female historical figures.

It is just REALLY odd.

Just as odd as Mel Gibson playing American characters, but Im guessing your more bothered that if he speaks with an Aussie accent that means Kirk has an Australian heritage and not just an American one?

Nah - I think it's because H&A is such a low budget, piss poor show(I am qualified to say that because I actually watched it for a while)and the acting is all terrible. The thought that somebody from that dreck was deemed worthy of being in a $150m tent pole film kinda boggles my mind. Plus he will just always be Kim to me from that show.

Also, how can I say, he is NOT a very good actor and I am getting ready to cringe when he is onscreen.

Oh and edited to add - Gibson actually IS an American. He was born there but raised in Oz. I remember even seeing his dad on a quiz show here in the early '80's and he spoke with a thick Yank accent.

Cant argue with you there, my girlfriends mum watches it along with all the other popular soaps in the UK...so I know where your coming from.

Hopefully the acting is so bad because its a soap meaning he can actually act...wont know untill we see some footage I guess (I really cant remember who he is anyway)

I did not know that, I just remember reading about Gibson talking about being an Australian, mayb it was just about growing up there.

I thought the same thing about the guy from H&A - he doesn't seem capable of acting his way out of a paper bag.

Took a while for me to load in FF, but it eventually worked. I'm pretty disappointed that they made Robau Cuban, instead of Pakistani though. Not to be racist, but I think a Pakistani captain would have made a larger impact, especially in today's world.
It does work in Firefox, but I recall a certificate issue when we saw things on the Intel site earlier this year. I also recall discussion of the nationality of the name and it seemed to turn up as Spanish/Latino more often than anything else.

That the actor isn't Hispanic is a detail; if Ricardo Montalban can play a man with Sikh-Indic heritage, then I don't see a problem with a Pakistani actor playing a part written as Hispanic. That's called acting, and if he's the right guy for the part, then that should be all that counts. We would have been much the poorer if Anthony Quinn had been allowed to play only Mexican-Irish characters.
Then we should hire black, brown, or yellow actors to appear in "whiteface" for all of the English, German ,Irish, etc. characters that dominate film. Makeup can do wonders these days.

No, no, the Hollywood rules are that all brown skinned people are interchangable as are all Asians. That's why Korean Cho is playing Japanese Sulu.:)

Then again Mr. Mom went on to become Batman and the guy from Bosom Buddies went on to lead the squad in Saving Private Ryan so maybe there's hope.

It was never established that Sulu was Japanese. In fact, the TOS Writer's Bible suggests that Sulu had mixed southeast Asian ancestry, including the Philippines. Sulu isn't a (current) Japanese surname, but the Sulu Sea is in the southwestern Philippines. But for all we know, Sulu really is Korean, and now is the first time that he is being played by an actor with the same ethnicity.

On it's face, it looks sort of racist, but when I think about it, it's not really all that bad. Being black and American, if I was an actor and someone wanted me to play a black Frenchman, or Australian, or Congolese, or Haitian, is it all that bad?

For major roles, not at all. If Harry Kim is Korean, and the best person to play him is Chinese, then that's fine.

But for minor roles, I'm not opposed to tinkering the character to fit the actor if it doesn't detract from the role. Robau probably could have been from Uzbekistan, and it wouldn't make a difference.

Come to think of it....we need more Uzbek captains in Star Trek...

Zooming in on the hanger area, it appears that the hanger deck extends almost the entire length of the nacelle.

That seems a bit overkill for a ship of this size. Though it could all depend on what the original design intent - per the types of missions the Kelvin is designated for.

If by "nacelle" you mean the secondary hull, then yes. The nacelle (noun: a separate streamlined enclosure on an aircraft that houses an engine) is below the saucer.

Very cool stuff. It's such a tease though! You can barely see any of the uniforms and just a small amount of the bridge. The alien looks freaking sweet.

It is just REALLY odd.

Not odd at all, really, since Mel *is* American (as is Susan Lucci). ;)

(seriously. Mel was born and raised in Peekskill, New York. You can look it up.)

Might the similarity in the appearance of the Kelvin Capt. serving with George Kirk and Nero have something to do with the plot, I think that would be a rather interesting plotline.

Someone already pointed that out, New Yorker till his family moved to Oz when he was 12, wonder if he would say he was American or Australian, or a bit of both...its like British born people moving to Canada (like my Dads Aunt) and calling themselves Canadian.

A bit more on topic now, someone else posted this too, Im wondering if the uniforms Robau and Kirk are wearing are the same ones leaked sometime last year, the grey ones (could look blue)...now they had a slightly different take on the delta shield and have been linked to the Academy photos. However its possible, that if the SF logo is the Enterprise one in this flick, that this would be an older version of that logo, just a thought.

That Monchezkean is definitely well-realized, or at least seems to be. Just seems a bit bizarre to have such an overwhelmingly alien character as a member of Starfleet so far back in the timeline (I know, I know ... "WHICH" timeline are we really seeing?)

Also seems to be just another attempt at some Star Wars-ification of this brand of Abrams Trek. Throw in aliens to make the Starfleet universe seem more far-reaching. Then again, maybe its too soon to tell. After all, I remember some of those ridiculous alien designs from the later TOS movies, especially one that looked sorta like a giant marshmallow head!

Oh well, only 5+ more months ...

What would you prefer? That we went back to the "man with chicken mcnugget stuck to his head" look?

On the other hand, I always thought it was odd that a Federation made up of so many different worlds had Starships that had crews that were almost entirley human.

Of course the real reason for this is the fact that TOS didn't have a large enough budget to include too many aliens. If money were no object, I'm sure that Gene Roddenberry would have had a "alien-looking" aliens as part of the crew (more alien-looking than Spock).
