Shows you LIKED that lasted too long.

The ones that everyone goes "duh' to...

Simpsons
Er
Law and Order
7th heaven (Well I never like it, but at first I didn't hate it.)

Then the X-Files became a mess after about season 7 I think.

Smallville became a mess around the 4th.

Sliders could have easily lasted several seasons if they stopped firing (or making it so bad that they quit) everyone.

Degrassi: The Next Generation I have only seen when Marco and friends graduated, but the show went on several more seasons, that wasn't needed.

ST:TNG: Even Moore said the 7th season sucked and that's because they were planning the terrible movie they made. Should have let the show continue and screw the movie.

Stargate should have ended liked what was planned after season 6, and then movie, then Atlantis.

And Firefly, there are times I wish the show was never made because the fans (really freaks) drive me crazy.

Law & Order - I still enjoy the series, and know that it's never been about one actor, but it's never quite been the same since Jerry Orbach left the series.

Although at the same time, now we've got this far it would be nice to see it get to 20 seasons...

I've got one that no one else has mentioned:

HBO's Oz. Had it ended at season four with the explosion, it would have been remembered as nothing short of brilliant, but it went on for two more seasons. Adebisi was gone. The perfect arc of Chris Keller, from entering the prison in cahoots with Schillinger to humilate Beecher, to loving him and then sacrificing for Beecher with no thought of gain to protect him from Schillinger, was retconned when Keller was brought back to Oz and turned back into a selfish prick. Ryan O'Reilly's "love story" with the female doctor turned unbelievably stupid and don't get me started on the pointless, anticlimactic death of Kareem Said in season 6 when the actor was no longer available. Just pitiful. Two seasons undid all the brilliance of the first four.

The A-Team!

A pox on Frankie Santana!

Indeed. :vulcan:

The A-Team, although I loved it as teenager for its silliness and, well, because Dirk Benedict was on it, it was never exactly Shakespeare. It was stupid, and it KNEW it was stupid. It was a live-action cartoon, and that was OK.

But the 4th season..... :wtf:. I mean, for God's sake, that was just beyond painful. I think "Family Reunion" was the only one I can watch these days. Not only did they have Frankie, the biggest waste of space EVER, but they didn't even TRY to write scripts. Hell, "Without Reservations" was literally a Starsky & Hutch script that had footage from a previous TAT episode tacked on at the beginning.

And don't even mention "The Crystal Skull." :brickwall:

To paraphrase Emerson Cod: that's the kind of episode that makes bad episodes feel better about themselves.

I loved this show, but I think it could have ended a season before it did. The last season seemed a bit stale.

The A-Team!

A pox on Frankie Santana!

Indeed. The only season I didn't buy on DVD. I just want to pretend it didn't happen.

Loved that show as a kid, seen a few episodes over the years in syndication. Care to give me an example of the "badness" that was the final season? :)

See my previous post. Some examples of bad--the team are working for the government, Murdock is often acting completely sane, the studio didn't want to continue to spend money on a show they planned to cancel, so many episodes weren't even finished---but they AIRED THEM ANYWAY. In "Without Reservations," the entire beginning is the beginning of another episode, "Holiday in the Hills." They added one shot of Frankie to update it. In "Crystal SKull," even the actors thought it stunk, and at the end, the natives are chanting, "Who wrote this?" in the background.

Rent season 5, if you wish. There are maybe three or four good episodes. But the rest is pretty darn painful.

And Frankie Santana is so very annoying. He makes BA seem almost believable.

^That actually sounds like it might be awesome to watch, in the same way a car accident is.

That chanting bit is priceless, it's like everyone involved knew exactly how fucked up the show had become! At least they are self-aware.

Oh, ugh...that reminds me of the last season of "Roseanne" which was all an unfunny, uninteresting, non-John-Goodman dream.

"Star Trek: Voyager" after Season 5.

Get the ship home and end the show.

Of course, Rick Berman wanted to hang onto his 20-year old contract with Paramount Studios, so he kept stringing TNG with DS9 with VOY with ENT along with the 4 TNG film and the rejected "Star Trek: The Beginning" script.

Good riddance.

Yet another vote for the X-Files. Six seasons was long enough - I stopped watching after that.

Oh, X-Files, absolutely. I'd also say Homicide, and add Roseanne, Wiseguy and St. Elsewhere.

That was the "lottery" season was it not? What a terrible, terrible idea. It's like she knew she wouldn't make a penny for the rest of her career and wanted to milk the syndication market for everything she could.

I'll vote for Law and Order. I still like the show, but it doesn't have the spark of old episodes at all (and none of the cast seems to click like it did in the past).

Here's an additional vote for M*A*S*H, Moonlighting and Roseanne.

And a nomination for The West Wing. They should have just pulled the plug when Sorkin left. It rapidly became completely unwatchable.
