Star Trek trailer description (Spoilers)

Please tell me he's not fleeing the law. This is all very tom cruiseish. Kirk is not a loose canon. He's a stack of books with legs according to Mitchell. Mitchell was the bad boy. They already tried the muscle car chase with Picard. It didn't work. Couldn't they invest in a creative consultant, someone with so-called inside information, to maybe make a few simple suggestions like hey maybe a Picard clone is not a good idea for a story or something like that ?

He can't be both, are you kidding me? It's almost like you want a one dimensional character.

Oh xortex, don't you see? Trite is the new genius!

Oh get off your high horse and stop mocking us, just because we like what we see for the new film. It doesn't make you some professional film critic just you don't like what you see.

No Kirk isn't a loose cannon, minus the fact that he CHEATED on one his final exams for the Kobyashi Maru mission. He has been rebellious his who career, but he was a mature adult, not some 13 year old. He may have been smart, but the man was a risk taker and a rebellious spirit as well.

No trailer here in Taiwan (we got the new 007 on Friday) Not that I expected it, but I was eagerly awaiting seeing the trailer online today because I assumed the US was getting Bond on the 7th also.
One funny thing I'll add is that the gun barrel scene is at the END of Quantum of Solace. It bugged me for the first 10 minutes of the movie.

I'm glad that that spoiler that nobody asked for was so germane to the current discussion

Sorry kid.
Ummm. let's see...what's up with the zero in that ship's registry? Good enough?

He cheated for altruistic reasons which is alot more than what we can expect from Kurtzman and Orci. If Abrams was altruistic, he would have at least consulted with other writer's ideas.

Instead we might get a watery time travel story. I just want to prepare fans of TOS that it might be worse than we think. I hope I'm wrong. but I just don't see ant deep sci-fi coming out of those two. Again, I hope somehow I'm wrong. It's gonna be more like sci-fi light. Just as the mission impossible movies turned the whole dynamic of team work on its head.

Reason all you want....he still cheated.

And no, its not going to be some DEEP scifi movie, its going to be action oriented. Some of the best episodes of TOS are action and suspense oriented...The Doomsday Machine, Balance of Terror, and even the Ultimate Computer. Those episodes are still considered classics of TOS, yet are not DEEP SCIFI episodes, but action oriented ones.

Hell the best regarded Star Trek films outside the fandom are TWOK and FC. And this film was made to appeal to the people OUTSIDE THE FANDOM, because thats where the money is.

Just because we aren't getting TMP (thank god) doesn't mean it's crap, and this preconcieved notion that since we arent getting deep scifi, its gonna suck is rediculous.

The ultimate computer was pretty deep.

Wait a second.

Did you just quote yourself? :wtf:

The Bond forum people are very pissed that trek people will be filling up good seats to see the trailer, but also figure that they will be able to move to those better seats once you vacate and skip seeing QOS.

What? Bond people intend to let Trek fans push in front of them to get the best seats? :wtf:

Kirk is not a loose canon. He's a stack of books with legs according to Mitchell. Mitchell was the bad boy.

The novels have usually assumed that, after a rebellious childhood, Kirk pulled his head in a bit at the Academy. You want Kirk to have no light and shade?

Hmm... The part where Kirk on his hovercycle drives to something big and awe-inspiring while the narrator ponders on his future...

I think we are going to see the Enterprise built on Earth's surface after all.

Timo Saloniemi

Remember, this is Kirk as a kid, not as an adult. He can do this thing called mature.

As a kid I think it makes sense for Kirk to be something of a rebel, especially if his father is killed.

It's pretty consistant with what I'd expect.

I'm sorry.
Hey, you're providing a valuable internet service: wise-ass naysayer!

I admit, the trailer sounds pretty crappy from the description, but I'll wait until I've actually seen it, rather than going off of some description online. The car/kid scenes are probably just flashbacks in the actual movie, so even though they sound as chiche as possible, I'm hoping they're just quick character establishing scenes...

He's a stack of books with legs according to Mitchell.

Mitchell is teasing Kirk. Mitchell is what we call an "unreliable narrator."

Just because a character says something about another character doesn't make it absolute literal truth with no room for deviation within the story context.

I very much agree! A kid whose father isn't around much because he's out gallivanting around space, a kid who witnesses the Tarsus IV tragedy, a kid with an older brother to live up to ... bound to be a rebel. Even if the movie shows us a Kirk who hasn't yet been to Tarsus IV (not real sure how we could get around that, exactly, but stranger things have happened), it's clear that Kirk has always been a rebel ("I owe him my life a dozen times over; isn't that worth a career? He's my friend!"). You don't just wake up one morning in your adult life and be like, "Ok ... I'm going to start being rebellious!" You start as a kid and it becomes part of your identity.
