Star Trek trailer description (Spoilers)

If Kirk is indeed being led by his emotions rather than his better judgement then it sounds like the perfect person for him to meet is Spock.

They need each other, and this movie must be about their eventual friendship and how they came to appreciate each others strengths and use them to their mutual gain.
That sounds pretty good to me.:techman:

Kirk was anything but selfless; in fact, he was often as clear absorbed in his own goals as any ambitious man.

What I'm wondering is...this trailer was shown all day to any Paramount employee who wanted to see it, and after three days we have two brief anonymous reports sent in to one website (granted, the most browsed and notorious)? Has no one else there heard of the Internet?

Not to mention that just about every cell phone in existance these days can shoot video. Why hasn't this ended up on Youtube yet?

Q2UnME
Just because employees could walk in and watch it whenever they wanted doesn't mean that there wasn't tight security there. Maybe there was a security guard who checked people for cell phones, cameras, pens and paper, employee badges, etc. before entering. In fact, I bet there was.

Not to mention the Forcefields, subspace dampening fields and the security guard checking for Tricorders. ;)

Sounds good. Wondering if some external force is making them fight each other or if in that young period, Spock is just overtaken by his "human half"

I have a friend who worked on the film. They are not a Trekkie and said the movie is "a hell of a lot better than I thought it was going to be."

Here's a quick description of a couple of scenes:

There's a cool fight scene on top of a space ship where Kirk and Sulu are fighting two villains. John Cho is playing Sulu and he's a badass. The guy who plays Kirk is very charismatic. They start off with him and Uhura meeting at a bar and he tries to hit on her while he's drunk.
Hints of First Contact?

I think we're looking at more of a Kal-El thing here.

James...you do not remember me...I am your father...by this time I will be dead...imbedded in the chevy before you...

Maybe the scene with the Corvette is Kirk reacting to the terrible news that his father has been killed aboard the Kelvin.

Actually....thats not a bad idea, and it makes sense.

Yeah, in a certain context it could be a powerful scene...or a lame one. Which is why I'm not going to make a call on that until I see the trailer.

...who are genuine fans of ST:TOS is that this film is going to infuriate long-time fans, for a bunch of reasons. A.) the script plays like "Top Gun in Space." B.) The production design (including the exterior of the Enterprise" is absolutely abysmal. People who've seen it says that "Galaxy Quest" has better set design; the Enterprise interiors look variously like "a sci-fi theme restaurant" or "the cosmetics counter at a department store." The Enterprise exterior is atrocious -- the ship has been enlarged to BSG size (it's way bigger than 1000 feet), and the proportions are awful -- a tiny secondary hull and gargantuan engines. (As my friends said, there's a reason Paramount isn't showing the whole thing yet -- the fans are gonna hate it when they see it.) C.) J.J. Abrams isn't a Star Trek fan -- he's a Star Wars fan, and it shows. D.) The scriptwriters have no love for TOS -- they grew up on The Next Generation, and their take on the characters is simply wrong. And finally, here's a plot detail that you read here first, to prove that I know what I'm talking about: there's a scene where the Enterprise does an atmospheric drop just like the Galactica in the "Exodus" ep (Abrams is a big BSG fan.) I'm seeing this film, but mainly for the ILM effects, the Michael Giacchino score, and because of Simon freaking Pegg as Scotty. (And don't get me started on how stupid it is to have a pre-teen Kirk driving a vintage Corvette 200 years in the future.)

If they are fighting due to some influence on Spock, that's fine. But if it is "young emotional Spock" fights with Kirk, no, not good.

I question Point D, as everything I've read indicates that Orci and Kurtzman are both fans of Trek in general and TOS in particular. I'm sure that there will be some who disagree with me, but I've read this numerous times in the past few months.

Okay--which "purist" in here got an invite to the screening? This seems a tad too "neat" the way it raises almost every objection simultaneously. Colour me sceptical (I'll be seeing it on Friday night, so I can judge for myself).

Yeah, the "genuine fans of ST:TOS" part seems very purist-y, in particular. Then again, much the same was said about Enterprise before it was launched, and I ended up agreeing with that. I'll be crossing my fingers.

Well, since this is clearly not first-hand info, but an angry post from a purist who is ranting about what his friend said it looked like, I'm just going to stay calm, put the shotgun back in the closet, and sit here until the trailer actually comes out.

...

*twitch twitch*

I'm gonna bet that the Corvette is his drunken uncle's, and Kirk drives it off the cliff to get back at him for something or other.

I just wonder if its the same uncle that has the barn in Idaho from Generations.

"The Enterprise exterior is atrocious -- the ship has been enlarged to BSG size (it's way bigger than 1000 feet), "

Ermmm.. how can someone actually TELL that? Did Paramount go measure the ship?

As my friends said, there's a reason Paramount isn't showing the whole thing yet -- the fans are gonna hate it when they see it.

So why didn't Paramount simply order them to change it? The movie passes it's test audience and bodes well with Paramount, and then Paramount Execs bad mouth it to a random guy (to us anyway) on the internet. MAKES PERFECT SENSE!
