I think a crew nearly all-female,with just one male crew member who occasionally says, "Hailing frequencies open," might be good. Ok, I guess that's a bit extreme, so let's throw in a male nurse whose sole function is to nurture a hopeless infatuation with the science officer.
If the characters/actors all happened to be female, that would be fine (if a little odd). I'd not watch the show if it were intentionally done, though, or if the sex of the cast for some strange reason affected the tenor or type of the show.
One thing I've always found odd about shows with mostly female characters is that the males (i.e. the romantic interests) tend to be really unlikable. Charmed is the only notable exception that comes to mind, and only so far as Leo and Cole were concerned.
Another oddity of female-starring shows is that the leads often seem to behave inordinately foolishly (and for no apparent reason). Gilmore Girls, Judging Amy, occasional Charmed, etc. all had this problem (though Judging Amy was apparently based on Amy Brenneman's mother's life, so the poor choices of its characters may be factually based), which you seldom see on shows with mostly male characters; it's cropped up on Heroes and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (mostly female, but the problem is John Connor) recently, though.
Neither of these used to be problems (see Wonder Woman or The Secrets of Isis), and I'd like to see them not be again. There's no reason that female leads should cause a show to be different.

It wouldn't matter to me. Plenty of shows I watch have an all male cast and I have no problem with them, so why would an all female cast be any different? And it's not like there wouldn't be any male guest stars. Xena and The Golden Girls both had an all female cast, but also had plenty of recurring male characters to balance it out.
Unlikely, given that a new Star Trek show would most likely end up on the CW.
Every month for a few days, that ship would be an unpleasant place.

No, it's still mildly amusing even in 2008. Back in 2003, the male cadets in my flight and myself thanked our lucky stars that Field Training wasn't long enough for the female cadets in our flight to synchronize cycles, though at 30 days long, we had to go through all of their periods at some point before it was over.
Don't bother responding to that sort of comment. Dennis wasn't criticising the joke, he was trying to assert himself over me again, like he regularly does. He just doesn't like me personally and attacks me, personally, every chance he gets. I just ignore him.

On to more interesting things...
Better to promote female bonding among the characters as they get together to bitch about guys. Remember, these shows are not pitched to a male audience so you're not expected to care or sympathize.
That's standard for comic shows. Male leads in comedies behave like morons, too.
Two things on this. First, I've found that the unlikability of the male - who typically fall in to the standard American male slots of Wimp or Monster - characters in these shows is severely offset by the fact that the female characters are even worse. They tend to be some combination of spiteful, self-absorbed, adulterous, shallow, moronic and narcissistic.
Second, a Science Fiction show pitched purely at women wouldn't stay on the air for five minutes. It'd be "retooled" before the first ad break. Even Smallville tries to offset the "oops my shirt has fallen off" time and endless turgid "romantic" scenes by pulling cool characters out of the comics and the occasional scene of Lois in a sexy outfit.
