I think in a TM.com interview Orci said the shields were going to be the 'second skin' type and not the 'bubble' type, so there are shields.
Since shields are just a type of force-field, I don't see why they wouldn't exist.
^ In regards to the shields thing,
I'm much more concerned about the story being good.
On the other hand, the images of the Kelvin are very monumental; this is New Trek we are seeing here fellahs. Trek can't stay in the past any more.
If you gave Gene the same budget, I am certain he'd have improved them too.
What I am certain of is that he would never have made another TOS era movie or prequel in the first place!
The second idea came during the third season or shortly afterward. From Trekmovie:We also had talked about maybe doing the story about how all the Enterprise crew came together years ago. But we are all seven years older and that might become such a huge make up problem that it makes it impossible. So we will probably go the direction of the five year mission is ended or has ended and for some reason there is some emergency and the entire old crew has to be put together again in a rebuilt and more powerful Enterprise.
Taken from The Art of Star Trek by Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens
As early as The Original Series’ third season, Gene Roddenberry had spoken of making a Star Trek motion picture. At the 1968 World Science Fiction Convention held over Labor Day weekend in Oakland, California he drew enthusiastic applause when he told a rapt audience his plans for filming a prequel to the series telling the story of how Kirk and his crew had met at Starfleet Academy.

We did as good a job as we could, but we were having to deal a lot with 2×4s and ply board and that sort of thing and we just didn’t the money for fantastic excursions and all of that. Of course doing a motion picture and particularly doing it on a wide screen where you see everything in so much detail…even if we had the old bridge we would have to redo it to make it more sophisticated and better.

Actually, Gene Roddenberry had ideas for a possible prequel in mind when coming up with ideas before TMP.

That was before TMP, and even then he had concerns about the actors being too old for a prequel!
Star Trek has so much potential, I still don't see the point in going back and to ruin TOS. The new movie might be a good movie and a major blockbuster, but it will never feel like being a part of TOS. They should have done a sequel, not a prequel!

'The Raped My Childhood'.
That is the essence of your post.
Sorry. That is how I see it.
Sometimes I find even new serialized TV shows that I didn't start with to be intimidating. I could only imagine where someone would start now given there's nearly 800 hours of Trek.
It will be. It'll be set in the 23rd century.
But anyway, post-Nemesis and it's too far removed from our own time I think. That and the whole point is to reintroduce the franchise to the masses. If someone had never tried Trek before a sequel to all that's come before would be extremely intimidating. Sometimes I find even new serialized TV shows that I didn't start with to be intimidating.
