Yeah, I kind of had the same reaction. I'll keep an open mind, but I have to admit I'm not entirely comfortable with either the bridge pic or the Kelvin pic. The bridge looks far too futuristic, something which I felt ENT did better.

I was ready to like this movie and give it a shot, but WHAT it looks like some comedy, like that movie The Live Aquatic with Steve Zissou crossed with the Thunderbirds movie.

moving on USS Kelvin external shot, looks good, looks a bit fake, but I like it.

If they're going to give Kirk a special Captains Only uniform, they could have gone with a variant of the wrap-around, in whatever color - gold, green, or even black. But a regular ol' long-sleeved T-shirt? Looks like he's Special Ops or something.

Well I think they have to have a balance between what was seen in TOS, and what we know now. I mean the bridge to me isn't perfect, and I have some issues with it, but I think we need to see a bigger picture, or a more complete picture to see really what it looks like. I think it will grow on me.

I bet They are all looking at Spock.
The more I look at Pegg, the more I think he was somewhere else when this pic was taken!

Actually, I think I see a bit of braid on McCoy's sleeve, but is it merely bad luck that the rank braids are obscured on everyone in the image?
And where would Uhura's rank insignia be? No sleeves, so no sleeve braids. Hmmm.

I'm not sure what you mean by "what we know now." Could you explain? I suppose it's also possible that this bridge isn't actually that of the Enterprise.
Is the guy in blue supposed to by McCoy? Cause if it is, he seems to have the wrong rank stripes.

yeah I just got the Chekov thing a few minutes ago, and to be frank Pegg looks he has had half his mind removed, however that could just be the instant the picture was taken. That is the one bit of slack I will give those images.

I should say the technology we have now. They have to balance the look and feel of technology today, and how we think it will look in the future, with the look of TOS. I will have to wait to see a more total bridge shot then that to really cement my feelings on it.

Keep in mind that these guys are fresh out of Starfleet Academy, maybe not even fully commissioned officers, yet. Why would you expect them to have the same rank insignia as they do in TOS?

I somewhat like the idea of teching it up. Some of it's a bit overboard, like the circuit panel thingies, but it looks sufficiently advanced to be the command center of a starship. Berman-era Trek sorta fell behind in trying to visually wow viewers with the ships interior.
Things I like
-It's clean-looking
-There's almost a retro vibe to the design
-The displays seem to be showing mostly the pertinent information without much okudagramness, sort of in the vein of TMP.
-Not sure about that standing console on the bridge
-Uniforms look great
-Urban looks dead on in the shot

One of the articles indicated these photos took place after a scene that had Sulu and Kirk fighting (each other or someone else?). I am thinking back to the pics showing Sulu planetside fighting with a Klingon or something, maybe Kirk was wearing black as it is an outfit worn below a spacesuit and he was planetside with Sulu.

These guys are not fresh out of the Academy, at least not in that shot. They could not all be fresh out of the Academy at the same time!
We know at least part of the movie covers the TOS time frame, so they would have to have their TOS ranks during that segment.
On closer examination, I see some braid on Sulu's sleeve, and something like 2 braids on McCoy's.

According to a TrekMovie.com report a while back, the ranks on the sleeves were going to be different over all. A little more simplified, so don't look at the ranks and try to compare them to the TOS ranks as they won't be the same anyway.
