Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac
Buffy/Angel is about the same, I suppose. I could never see the attraction at all. Thus I never got into it. Again, I wouldn't say I actively disliked it, I just could never connect.
That was me until I I randomly decided to give them each an actual, fair chance. Turns out they were much better than I had expected. Especially
Angel.
I mean, how can you not be intrigued by the concept of a show where the good guy is a monster and the bad guys are lawyers?
I really am curious about this, actually. If anyone's got a good answer I'd love to hear it.
Well, the concept itself is interesting (though my first thought would be a full-out comedy). However, I've always been more on the Science Fiction side of "Science Fiction and Fantasy", and Buffy and Angel just have too many aspects I'm not fond of, including monsters and vampires, for example.
Call me biased, if you will, but that's never really been my cup of tea.
What's most likely also a problem (and something I've been finding increasingly difficult with Trek, for example) is the masks. I'm just not fond of seeing people in masks as monsters OR aliens, for that matter. I usually end up seeing a guy in a mask rather than what I'm supposed to be seeing (this is one of the things I like about the nuBSG, for example).
So, yes, the concept on Buffy/Angel may be interesting but the whole setting just isn't for me.
"Automatically makes it better"? Hardly. A good show is a good show. An ordinary show is an ordinary show. Genre is irrelevant. I see no reason to watch shows that don't appeal to me simply because they fit into any genre, SF / F included.
You're right, I was speaking in hyperbole. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say that the fact that they're genre automatically makes them 90% more likely to be given a chance in the first place, at least by me.
I think I know exactly where you're coming from. I enjoy ordinary shows as much as the next guy. However, I am more likely to check out a new genre show and give it more of a chance.
There's also something about SciFi shows feeling more 'special' to me (the good ones, for example). nuBSG is a prime example of this. It's not perfect, but I just don't know any 'ordinary' show that comes even close for me.
It has to do with the setting, the themes, and the possibilities opened up by that universe which just don't exist on an ordinary show.
Even if I found an ordinary show that was better written, for example, I don't think it would really matter.
