What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomach?

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

I can't say I hate anything, but the following are kinda bleh for me

Anything Stargate related.
Voyager
Enterprise
New Star Wars

I'm just starting to watch Dr. Who, and whille I've found it decent, I'm not sure it's going to maintain my interest for too long.

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

Stargate is the most dull, cliche, by-the-numbers show. If the writers ever had an original idea, the world would end.

NuBSG started out ok but it's now become a joke. It proves that there can be too much angst, drama, and darkness. The characters care more about being at each others throats then working for the greater good. They've been acting like such assholes for so long they're not even human anymore.

LOTR's bored me to tears.

Harry Potter is vastly overrated. Every character seems to act like Pip from South Park.

Heroes had a phenomenal first season, but has yet to put out anything to follow it up.

Wow. I agree with all of these but I do like Stargate and Heroes.
Others I really don't like are Dr. Who, Torchwood, Lexx and Enterprise.

I like Heroes a lot too but Season 2 and parts of Season 3 so far are just too similar to parts of Season 1 imo.

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

I don't really watch much sci-fi outside of Trek but these are the ones I have seen but, also didn't care for:
Star Wars... Loved it as a kid but I can't stand it now, prequel trilogy or the original trilogy.
NuBSG.... Yes, I know it's a remake but I was still curious about it and I got tired of it by the 6th episode. It's just too damn morose for me.
Sarah Connor Chronicles..... I quit after the first episode because of the use of time travel. Terminator canon is becoming more complicated then even Trek's.... and there isn't even all that much filmed material. I'll just stick with the first 3 movies.
Babylon 5..... I just got bored with it.

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

The Alien(s) movies...I just don't get what people see in them.

Firefly...I saw the first episode and thought it was awful.

NuBSG....just don't get me started on this!

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

Buffy/Angel is about the same, I suppose. I could never see the attraction at all. Thus I never got into it. Again, I wouldn't say I actively disliked it, I just could never connect.

That was me until I I randomly decided to give them each an actual, fair chance. Turns out they were much better than I had expected. Especially Angel.

I mean, how can you not be intrigued by the concept of a show where the good guy is a monster and the bad guys are lawyers?

I really am curious about this, actually. If anyone's got a good answer I'd love to hear it.

Well, the concept itself is interesting (though my first thought would be a full-out comedy). However, I've always been more on the Science Fiction side of "Science Fiction and Fantasy", and Buffy and Angel just have too many aspects I'm not fond of, including monsters and vampires, for example.
Call me biased, if you will, but that's never really been my cup of tea.

What's most likely also a problem (and something I've been finding increasingly difficult with Trek, for example) is the masks. I'm just not fond of seeing people in masks as monsters OR aliens, for that matter. I usually end up seeing a guy in a mask rather than what I'm supposed to be seeing (this is one of the things I like about the nuBSG, for example).

So, yes, the concept on Buffy/Angel may be interesting but the whole setting just isn't for me.

"Automatically makes it better"? Hardly. A good show is a good show. An ordinary show is an ordinary show. Genre is irrelevant. I see no reason to watch shows that don't appeal to me simply because they fit into any genre, SF / F included.

You're right, I was speaking in hyperbole. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say that the fact that they're genre automatically makes them 90% more likely to be given a chance in the first place, at least by me.

I think I know exactly where you're coming from. I enjoy ordinary shows as much as the next guy. However, I am more likely to check out a new genre show and give it more of a chance.
There's also something about SciFi shows feeling more 'special' to me (the good ones, for example). nuBSG is a prime example of this. It's not perfect, but I just don't know any 'ordinary' show that comes even close for me.
It has to do with the setting, the themes, and the possibilities opened up by that universe which just don't exist on an ordinary show.
Even if I found an ordinary show that was better written, for example, I don't think it would really matter.

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

Lexx. It was just so bloody juvenile.

Apart from that, there are shows I don't like but I can't really say I can't stomach them. Even the modern Doctor Who has its merits.

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

^
Yeah, Lexx was pretty bad IMHO.

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

Any comic books that seriously retcon in movies. Spider-Man parts of it were bad and unforgivable, some were okay. Chris Nolan's Batman, same thing.

Buffy, Angel, Terminator (the film and the show), Lucas' New Star Wars (when Genndy did it, he did a great job)...I'll think of some more.

What do you mean ? The movie versions of comic book characters have their own continuity.

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

Would it have to be something like Star Trek overall or can I just point to Voyager and ask, "What the hell just happened there?"

Stargate, though I happened to catch the Charles Shaugnessey episode by channel surfing and he makes things interesting.

Charmed. Babylon 5.

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

Voyager-Good characters, some good ideas, but wow, talk about a show that locks itself in a box. How can you kick a starship over to the overyonder of the galaxy and still feel like nothing really has happened?

Seasons one through three of Enterprise.

Charmed. Buffy without the charm. Some have referred to it as "Buffy for stupid people." That wrestling ep was absolutely hideous, and I'm a guy who usually likes the "boxing" eps.

I don't get all the Whedon hate. I consider Whedon one of the finest creators EVER in visual scifi/fantasy. But he's got a certain way of doing things that you either get or you don't. I do note that those of us who DO get it, we are usually very passionate about. But if it's not your thing, it's not your thing.

The DC animates series. I LOVE those characters, long time comics fan. But those series have mostly hit me as "eh".

Smallville. Some good superhero stuff and a GREAT portrait of the making of a villain (Lex Luthor), completely nullfied by the most horrible teen angst. Yes, Lana, your caring, adoring boyfriend won't just open up his inner self and let you go through it like a public library.

God, what a bitch.

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

Buffy was unwatchable for me.
Heroes was the same.
Steven Spielberg's Taken - couldn't even get through the trailers.
Smallville - ditto Taken

Of those others mentioned, most of them were neutral or actively like. Some, like Lexx and Andromeda I've never seen.

My special Hate Prize goes to TATV, of course.

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

Oh yeah, Heroes. Watched season one. Oh, how I want to see a good ongoing superhero series on TV.

Still waiting...so damned overrated. Dour and dark, but without the depth, unlike NuBSG. Drama without interesting characters upon which to base it. Silar is good (can't wait to see Quinto play Spock) and Hiro has promise, but everyone else, yawn. Angst without wit..and I hear it gets much worse in season two.

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

Firefly. sub-Star Wars, Galaxy Rangers knock-off.

Babylon 5. load of pretentious waffle and one of the most emmbarassing lines of dialogue (including President Whitmore's iD4 speech and 'get this cheese to sickbay')

nu-BSG. anachronistic crap mixed with depressing guff

as for movies 'retconing' the comics; NEW CONTINUITY! it's not that hard a concept!

and FYI auntiehill: i liked both F4 movies and am saddened there won't be a third. Evans and Chiklis were brilliant.

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

I can't be doing with Smallville - a Superman show without a proper Superman? No thanks.

Stargate I won't say I hate, but I don't watch it. I do usually enjoy it if I see an episode, better than most of tv, but never enough to make me want to watch it all.

Likewise Enterprise - I stopped watching it because it was so mediocre I just couldn't be bothered to schedule time for it - but I don't hate it if I see it. I'm like that with Voyager now as well, I watched it all at the time, but I was young and reckless...

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

'Hate' is a bit much, but some of the shows I have 'issues' with include:

Torchwood (When it isn't riding on the coattails of Who, it's pretty shamelessly - and worse, lazily - ripping off every genre show from the past decade or so.)
Buffy (Tried damn hard to like this, but never got there. The fact it struck me as a bit too impressed with itself didn't help.)
Babylon 5 (I loved it for the first few years, but when I tuned for season 4 it was like I was watching a different show. It turned to rubbish almost overnight. And the worst part is, it steadily got worse over the remaining two years.)
The X Files (Again - loved it for the first few years, but by about season five I had given up.)
Star Trek: Voyager and Enterprise (There's something about the two most recent Treks where I could sit and watch an episode and 30 seconds after it was over not remember a single thing from it.)
Star Wars Prequels (Ugh, where to begin ...)

Re: What SciFi or Fanasty Series, Film or Franchise can you not stomac

Harry Potter: The nerd chic thing mixed with magic tripe. Never got the appeal.

Chronicles of Narnia: Fuck talking animals (not literally)! Seriously...kids and talking animals...I'm out the door. I may eventually try to watch the movie.

Andromeda: I think I did watch part of one episode once.

Hercules: Kevin Sorbo...yech. The first couple of t.v. movies were okay. the series got annoying fast.

Xena: Mildly entertaining, but when the show took itself to seriously...forget it.

Earth Final Conflict: Sleep inducing.

Mutant X: Not sure I watched past the credits.

Underworld: Got bored 15 minutes into the first one, never looked back.

Heroes: Saw the first 2 episodes...then quit. Just not interesting to me.

The Twilight Zone: Any post-60's version.

The Outer Limits: Ditto.

Knight Rider: Okay, it's a talking car. Wow.

Never even saw The 4400 or Dead Zone.

Farscape was one I used to dislike, but then gave it another chance.
