So I got to thinking this morning about the past range of Fan Collectives put out on DVD. Then last year, CBS put out the Captain's Log set and went to the trouble of filming special introductions for it's featured episodes.
I happened to find this news story over at SCI FI Wire, which reports such an idea is already being done to promote X Files 2. Basically it's a DVD collection in which the series' producers pick stories which tie-in to the upcoming film.
Since the writers have already gone on record as saying some elements of past Trek are important to Star Trek (2009), perhaps this would be good opportunity for them to select the shows that influenced their story.
Interview extract from TrekMovie.com:
I can easily imagine Unification, the two-parter featuring Spock making the grade since the new film will at last reveal what happened to him next.
Yesterday's Enterprise is perhaps another episode that we've been dropped hints about.
Any thoughts...? Besides the obvious fact this is milking the franchise again for another product. I genuinely think that if the movie picks up threads started on the small screen, in TOS, TNG, ENT, even DS9 & VOY, then collecting them in one set and putting it on sale makes sense. Throw in some behind the scenes footage and any trailers... and I'd certainly buy it.
Clearly only Abrams, Kurtzman and Orci know which are episodes with connections, but there's no reason we can't make guesses which ones a ST 09 tie-in could feature... anything from The Cage to TNG/DS9 episodes set at the academy.

TrekMovie.com: You once told me that you will be putting in ‘continuity nuggets’ as little Easter eggs for the fans. Will some of those be related to the other series like TNG?
Roberto Orci: We got some TNG stuff in there for sure. I made sure of that. And there should be a little something from everything, but for me personally it is all about Next Generation and The Original Series because those are the shows that really set down the rules for Trek that the other shows picked up on. We are also trying to do a lot of what Enterprise was doing in terms of a prequel and some of the corners of Star Trek which were mainly defined by Deep Space Nine are covered to a certain degree.
TrekMovie.com: So are we talking about little references like the name of a ship, like the USS Archer in Star Trek Nemesis?
Roberto Orci: Our references are bigger than that and more pivotal to the story. But I love that little stuff too and we are doing that as well.
