DVD Collective Tied-in to TREK '09?

So I got to thinking this morning about the past range of Fan Collectives put out on DVD. Then last year, CBS put out the Captain's Log set and went to the trouble of filming special introductions for it's featured episodes.

I happened to find this news story over at SCI FI Wire, which reports such an idea is already being done to promote X Files 2. Basically it's a DVD collection in which the series' producers pick stories which tie-in to the upcoming film.

Since the writers have already gone on record as saying some elements of past Trek are important to Star Trek (2009), perhaps this would be good opportunity for them to select the shows that influenced their story.

Interview extract from TrekMovie.com:

TrekMovie.com: You once told me that you will be putting in ‘continuity nuggets’ as little Easter eggs for the fans. Will some of those be related to the other series like TNG?

Roberto Orci: We got some TNG stuff in there for sure. I made sure of that. And there should be a little something from everything, but for me personally it is all about Next Generation and The Original Series because those are the shows that really set down the rules for Trek that the other shows picked up on. We are also trying to do a lot of what Enterprise was doing in terms of a prequel and some of the corners of Star Trek which were mainly defined by Deep Space Nine are covered to a certain degree.

TrekMovie.com: So are we talking about little references like the name of a ship, like the USS Archer in Star Trek Nemesis?

Roberto Orci: Our references are bigger than that and more pivotal to the story. But I love that little stuff too and we are doing that as well.

I can easily imagine Unification, the two-parter featuring Spock making the grade since the new film will at last reveal what happened to him next.

Yesterday's Enterprise is perhaps another episode that we've been dropped hints about.

Any thoughts...? Besides the obvious fact this is milking the franchise again for another product. I genuinely think that if the movie picks up threads started on the small screen, in TOS, TNG, ENT, even DS9 & VOY, then collecting them in one set and putting it on sale makes sense. Throw in some behind the scenes footage and any trailers... and I'd certainly buy it.

Clearly only Abrams, Kurtzman and Orci know which are episodes with connections, but there's no reason we can't make guesses which ones a ST 09 tie-in could feature... anything from The Cage to TNG/DS9 episodes set at the academy.

Greetings. Has the great global recession happened yet? Who's the President these days? Obama? Oh wait, sorry. I needed to mark Spoilers in the thread... :p

Seriously, if this thread works out better in the General Trek Discussion... Mods feel free to move.

I confess I don't know that much about the Fan Collectives sets, but if you want this to go to General Trek, just say the word and off it goes. :)

As someone who has little intention of investing in ANY of the season sets of any of the Treks, I did invest in the "Time Travel Fan Collective" and I'm looking forward to the "Alternate Realities Fan Collective" that was just announced for a September release.

I might be interested in a Trek XI set, but it would have to depend on what's included and why.

Sure. Thanks. We'll give that a try. Appreciated! ;)

It's all speculation at the moment, until we know for sure what episodes (if any) the writers have picked up storylines from. This is probably more a General Trek thing.

I'd be interested in this set, as long as it included lengthy introductions setting up Trek XI, as well as added commentaries or other features that were neglected on the season sets.

In the very least, like the X-Files DVD that I'm not going to buy, the episode list we'll give me some idea of what I should cram in before I go to see the movie. :)

That's pretty much it for me too. Based on interviews with the writers, the references will run deeper than just "ooh look they've named-checked that character". So perhaps they're doing a TOS continuation like The Wrath of Khan did, where seeing Space Speed wasn't essential but adds to the enjoyment if you do. I can imagine when the film starts, knowing where Spock's character was left in Unification will come up. Other influences probably include TOS stories which touch on their past like Amok Time, Journey to Babel and Conscience of the King or Obsession (rumoured). If there's a portion covering Vulcan's past, then ENT The Forge/Kir'Shara/Awakening just might be relevent. All speculation of course, but fun to imagine what shows Orci, Kurtzman etc took their cues from.

Not necessarily.
Especially since Shinzon dissolved the Senate, Spock may have had to beat feet and get the hell OFF of Romulus without having accomplished squat in the years between Unification and <sigh> Nemesis.

Can we de-canonize NEM? Pretty please?!? :)
