I think SNW conclusively disproves this idea. Thanks to the efforts of the cast, even some extremely shaky scripts come across way better than they have any business doing.
Same with TOS. There are some exceptionally shaky scripts that are saved by Shatner and Nimoy.
Q is swapping between uniforms from human history. The intent of the scene is clear, Q is dressed as a human judge of 2079 or whatever after we dispense with all the United Earth nonsense (man, we can only hope). They could have explicitly had the Q adopt it as some sort of semi-official uniform with a line of dialogue about appreciating how efficient that particular court was or something along those lines.
It kind of already did that with Voyager.
Plus, the courtroom is the thing described as accurate in Encounter at Farpoint, not Q's outfit.
But they didn't, so it's reasonable to conclude that Voyager and SNW simply messed up to varying degrees.
Hardly a double standard. The VOY screenshot isn't much of a gotcha considering that scene is literally in the Major Grin video and implied to be stupid as well. But @fireproof78 explicitly said he would never 'give a click' to Major Grin, hence he wouldn't have known that.
Nah. The Q court robes are an iconic visual. So why not use them? Probably a deliberate choice with no need for a time wasting “explanation.”
Really? I didn't find it clear because the mobile chair seems odd in a post atomic horror.

It's just Roddenberry's and 1987's interpretation of a postnuclear judge's robes, especially when you consider that the courtroom appears to have a heavy population of ethnic Asian war survivors. Gene probably thought it looked more exotic and "Eastern."
Interesting. I never read his robes as being the court of the post atomic horror given his presentation was more theatrical compared to the mundane setting.

But their linearity and the normal flow of time in the universe don't match up.
I mean, the thing with Amanda Rogers also obviously occurred after The Q and the Grey.
Only in so far as to support the narrative that current producers hate Star Trek.
The robes always looked very European to me.
