Quite the opposite in fact the "gimmicks" as they are often mislabelled are the core identity of the show. The writers go out of their way to make every episode wildly different from each other allowing for the classic Trek ability to just drop in to a random episode.

Each episodes have to be big and eye catching in order to survive in the modern landscape. It is not feasible to make something that will only appeal to us hardcores.

It wasn't neccessary in season 1 and 2. They made an excellent show which focused more heavily on the science fiction element. Those seasons rated and were reviewed much more strongly and were watched by many more people. Perhaps the showrunners don't care but I doubt it given that they've just recently said that they're hoping to get Year One. I hope they do as well but it will require that quite high numbers of people are watching. If they were able to achieve that in season 1 and 2 but not in 3 and 4 then I think there's been a problem. I do believe that they'll course correct for season 5 and recapture what made season 1 and 2 so strong.

Yep. If you look on any review site, those first two seasons were rated very highly. This season has gotten the lowest reviews ever.

I wish that were true, but from what I've seen this season, they are far down that rabbit hole and I don't think they ever got out of it. The first season was the best and the second wasn't too far behind it. While I enjoyed the crossover with LD and thought the musical was entertaining, I never dreamed that the show would become ALL about those type of episodes and the standard sci-fi fair would become the rarity.

The sceince fiction element has not been diminished.

All shows diminish in audience over time and each episode of SNW has always had its own mission statement, it's own flavour and if people can watch Valles Marineris and The Griffin Incident and say this is just Jurassic Park and Event Horizon then there is no reason the same can't be said about episodes in seasons 1 and 2. Other than a conscious bias and the "not real star trek" argument getting shunted along to the latest release.

The sale of Paramount makes that incredibly unlikely regardless of viewerbase. And with how many people claim "no one" was watching Discovery then there's no reason why SNW was ever made in the first place. Again a deliberate bias among the viewers and even those not viewing in some cases.

I don't believe the show has changed course in the first place, it is no different than it always was. I honestly feel these arguments are just perpetrated by disgruntled fans who have a very specific idea in their head about a show that could not possibly be successful.

Does anyone know if the cast has spoken out about the path this show has taken? They can't be happy with this shitfest.

I was generally bored by the episode, but the actors looked like they had a great deal of fun with it.

Lower than season 3? :( I think this season is every so slightly better. I think they've overused La'an a bit but I prefer her story this season to the heavy focus on dancing.

Don't forget that season 4 was in the can before they received the feedback on 3. I think they had a big shock about the response to 3 and have course corrected. I think we can see even from this season that they've removed scenes in editing in response to that feedback and think that's improved things. That feels like a positive sign that they're listening and 5 will be more of a return to form.

The only episodes this season that have averaged above a 7 was episode one(dinosaur episode) and episode six(disaster homage).

This is all speculation. I don't think they ever did change. We are more than halfway thru the season and it's still homage this and homage that. I think they just made whatever seemed like cool ideas at the time, and since the show is ending anyway, had no desire to change. We will have to wait and see. I'd love to be proven wrong.

That's true but they were shocked to to promise that season 4 would be better. They're also desperate for Year One to happen. They need the ratings of season 1 and 2 back. I think they genuinely thought audiences would adore season 3 but the proof was in the pudding so to speak. If for no other reason than they're desperate for Year One, I think they were motivated to change things. At least I hope so!

So, if trying to make sense of Q's timeline but with full knowledge that it's non-linear and assuming that Trelane is Q's offspring, in what order should we view his appearances to be linear from our perspective? For example, is Amanda's birth decades or millennia after Q procreated? Is the appearance of his son in Voyager after TOS etc.

They’re omnipotent beings. The way they experience time shouldn’t make a lick of sense to us. I’ll be honest, I like it that way. Not everything should be dumbed down to the “human” level.

Yeah the memberberrie homages are really overdone in this show. I hear people moan about Picard Season 3 doing it but SNW has done it more than any recent live action show.

I last batch of episodes will be better though. I doubt they burned any of the last 6 episodes on these types of stories. They will be in the process of wrapping it all up.

Are you kidding?

Have you seen the "crap" actors on shows like TNG and Voyager were enthusiastic about?

Actors don't judge the material by the yardsticks that Trekkies do. In fact, professionals in general have different levels and kinds of regard for the various facets of their work and working environment than fans do.

So, every so often you get some disgruntled crank like, oh, I don't know, a couple of the supporting actors on Voyager shilling for applause by running down their past work after they're no longer drawing paychecks. But you don't see that behavior as often as armchair critics would like.

The range of the parts that the cast of SNW play offer opportunities broader than probably any previous Trek TV series.

If they were building to a year one, they should have stuck with what worked. There was plenty of feedback available after the first two years to show that they were on the right track to begin with. Homages and gimmicks are fine for an episode or two, but they should never comprise half or more of a season.

But most people want their steak to be meat and cooked a certain way, not that it's actually a piece of old car tyre.
I guess that's the difference for me; it's all steal, just not all cooked to my liking. Even the worst Trek episodes or series for me I wouldn't call car tyre instead of steak. If it was that bad I'd probably stop watching completely.

This is, to be fair, not... really true. For example, if you just dropped into this episode randomly, you would have no idea who Juliet is or what this "other life" of Pike's is that people are talking about. (Trelane even lampshades this; the creators were well aware.) Whether or not the associated emotional beats would land would vary by person -- this doesn't change how good Mount's and Anna Mirodin's performances are -- but I'd call that sort of thing a barrier to entry for casuals.

It happens a lot. SNW looks superficially like episodic television but is clearly made with the assumption that it's for people who are watching whole seasons at a time. That's kind of a pity b/c I think making it genuinely episodic would probably have been a good idea.
Each episodes have to be big and eye catching in order to survive in the modern landscape. It is not feasible to make something that will only appeal to us hardcores.
SNW has also, we should acknowledge, ultimately not survived in the modern landscape. Four and a half seasons isn't a bad run in the chaos of the streaming era, but really -- and I say this with great affection for SNW and Lower Decks and Prodigy et al. -- the only NuTrek show that had a really significant impact outside the fandom was DISCO.

I think the "gimmick" episode commitments are actually a core part of appealing to us hardcores. Trek fans who know and love the wackier end of the spectrum, going all the way back to TOS, are not hard to find, and any particular "gimmick" will appeal to a fairly significant fraction of those, even if some others bounce off of it. I feel like that's a considered strategy in SNW that isn't really about the casual viewer, but about getting the most out of a niche audience.

Is that not the purpose of the previously on recaps? Here's some context for today's adventure just in case this is your first time.
Mileage varies about how useful those are. Personally, I don't think I'd find them all that helpful if I wasn't familiar with the actual episodes. Especially when the material involved is really weird and specific, like Pike's girlfriend having a vivid imaginary life with him before turning into a statue.
