It's probably just comes down to preference. It's like steak. People will get mad at my wife because she likes well done. But she's not wrong to want her steak her way.

The noir episode with Kor mostly works because of Babs and Romijn. They embrace the goofiness of the black-and-white world and the characters each own it.

This silly ep didn't work for me. I'm watching to see Star Trek. What I'm getting are too many gimmicks, as so many have already said. It's like the writers have run out of ideas for real stories.

They went so slowly and never in human nature have people got in so much trouble in such a short time and had it drag on forever.

It may have been filmed that way, but what matters is what the final product shows. And since Trelane's name was cutoff before he coukd say it, that's what we go by.
And yes, Pike not bothering with getting Trelane's name is stupid. Why would you NOT want to know at least the name of your enemy/opponent/whatever you want to term it?
At the very least, for the record so other Starfleet captains and officers know who they are up against.

A non-issue AFAICS. Why would you actually believe anything this entity said to you about its identity? Why couldn't you come up with your own name for it instead of what it claims to be? Given how manifestly untrustworthy and chaotic it is? There is no real reason for Pike to care what Trelane calls himself.
I can see it being useful data in some sense. But in the moment Pike is in where he's urgently trying to get out of this totally surreal situation? His reaction feels entirely natural.
Whether it's a lie or not is immaterial. At least it's more information than he had previously. And he could have just as easily said 'don't care' after he finished identifying himself. That saved, what... half a second? It was foolish.
So, if trying to make sense of Q's timeline but with full knowledge that it's non-linear and assuming that Trelane is Q's offspring, in what order should we view his appearances to be linear from our perspective? For example, is Amanda's birth decades or millennia after Q procreated? Is the appearance of his son in Voyager after TOS etc.
Even if the actors had issues with the path taken, I doubt they would say anything before the end of the series. But I am not sure if this happens often in any show. Dunno, has it ever happened in any ST? to have actors criticize their own show while on air?
Quite the opposite in fact the "gimmicks" as they are often mislabelled are the core identity of the show. The writers go out of their way to make every episode wildly different from each other allowing for the classic Trek ability to just drop in to a random episode.
Each episodes have to be big and eye catching in order to survive in the modern landscape. It is not feasible to make something that will only appeal to us hardcores.
Lower Decks was a loving parody and salute to Star Trek and truly a universal translator for this inside and outside of the fanbase.
Picard was initially an intimate look at one character's life and an introspective exploration of how loss shapes us.
Discovery was the big dramatic galaxy ending adventures.
Academy was an attempt at bringing an intergenerational appeal to the franchise.
And SNW uses genre and homage as its playground to facilitate space shenans and explore the human condition.
If all you can see is the surface level wrapper of a story then that is simply your own bias and it's standing in your way.
But most people want their steak to be meat and cooked a certain way, not that it's actually a piece of old car tyre.
While I was favourable of this week's episode I am still in the camp with most people that you can stray too far from what makes a steak a steak.
And is she wrong to want to eat a car tyre? I can't say she is... but it's not what the majority would want. And why a lot of people are going "ANOTHER CAR TYRE?"
If a small number of people feel like a steak tastes like a tyre it doesn't make it one, nor does the bandawagon of those claiming it is actually a tyre.
But we'll see how many of them complain when the steakhouse shuts and is replaced by a mushroom restaurant.

I seem to recall occasions where people have asked “What if Star Trek was this?” or “What if Star Trek were that?”
SNW is trying that. Do I think it lands every time? No. There have been some misfires. But I am at least always somewhat entertained and give it sincere credit for trying to take Trek into different genres.
