This. All of this. Trekkies take themselves way too seriously. If we can't poke fun at some of the more ridiculous elements of our fandom, such as those who put Terry Matalas on a pedestal and worship him as the savior of Trek and the second coming of Gene, then there's something wrong.

I agree. We fans do need to loosen up and not take things so serious. It is what The Matalas would want from us all!

How odd that Picard and Discovery used the very same mecha tentacle creature so quickly after each other… and it didn’t work in either case.

It’s not directed to you and most fans of season three. It’s directed towards those who treat Matalas as the savior of Star Trek when truthfully his one season is very divided. Like much of Star Trek. Even my favorite, SNW, which I more than understand is not everyone’s cup of tea. If people were praising Akiva like he was the only one who could save Star Trek, I’d probably make the same joke there.

At the end of the day, it’s a joke. Trekkies need to learn to laugh at themselves sometimes, because we absolutely can be ridiculous about our love of this franchise.

Terry didn't save all of Trek but he did save Picard. After the first two awful seasons we got a more traditional Trek adventure. But no he did not save modern trek. There's too much bad stuff out there to have had decent a season of STP save it.

As others have said, the story (read: mystery box) was window dressing for the nostalgia. If that appeals to someone, cool.

But I’m not a fan.

So no, it doesn’t “save” anything. It’s a take on a premise that some appreciate and some don’t.

My biggest frustration with the season is how it repeats plot points from Season 1 (Data returns, secret child, Starfleet officer is a jerk to Picard) but yet Season 3 gets a pass with it's use of nostalgia, while giving a thin story, and actively treating most anyone not the heroes as incompetent, jerks or replaceable.

The messaging is weird and very much a double standard being applied. Characters are out of character, jerks, act like 21st century humans and only old things are reliable. Fir Star Trek that message is confusing.

I don't watch a show because it's a success. Popularity is my least trusted metric so Matalas earns no points for me
