Streaming era missed opportunities

Obviously i'm a little ahead of things, with the rest of season 4 SNW, SFA season 2 and SNW season 5 to go, but it's been almost ten years. What haven't they done that you wished they had?

I thought a big team up miniseries (a la Marvel's Defenders) was a dead cert until it never happened. Characters from all the shows past and present mixing and battling some kind of baddie alliance. Could have been shite, might have been amazing.

Also loads of specific things, like a Discovery episode from Lorca's POV would have made season one so much more. And Michael finding recordings Spock made for her a la Sarah Connor in Terminator 3 (I think?)

They planned/hoped for a tv-movie a year following Section 31, with Discovery and Picard suggested as potentials for stand alone follow-ups. Hopefully they'd have been vastly better than S31.

And I do wish they'd gotten Kelvin Kirk into Prodigy as was considered at one point.

What else? Other than the usual "it was ALL a missed opportunity" stuff.

If only they had saved their "danger to the whole/every galaxy" event for a team-up instead of using it as a season finale hook multiple times.

Personally I didn't care about a team-up, but it's unlikely to have been worse than some of the other garbage they came up with over the years.

This one, right here. I wish we had gotten the Short Trek that was hoped to bring back Nichelle Nichols to show her as a seasoned officer and - IIRC - a mentor for a young Picard.

Beyond that, I'd like to have seen the original Kim/Lippoldt Section 31 and the original version of Discovery's second season before Harberts and Berg got fired. Maybe the original version of Picard's second season, but that's a big maybe.

I wish we'd have gotten a Star Trek anime series. Of any era of the franchise, this one seemed the most primed to make it happen. I still think an infusion of Japanese influence could be a magical thing within the framework of this franchise.

I think for me it would need to be in the 2260's. That is where it would've made a difference in the real world of the 1960's.

That is true. Paramount's already doing manhwa with the Korean WEBTOON platform, so the pathway is already there.

This was my idea for the 50th anniversary. A special epic time travel story that featured some representative from each of the first 5 series.

It's a little more difficult now, I think. The final hurdle to my imagination being the 31st century. That's now 3 distinct time periods to cover. And the increased character count is just a bit much.

Either in the form of the SOTL calendar, IDW comics or a novel mini-series, it would be cool if we got an all-series crossover every so often.

By now it would have to include: TOS - TAS - TNG - DS9 - VOY.VGR - ENT - KEL - DSC.DIS - LD - SNW - PRD.PRO - S31 - SA.SFA and SCO.

The first half of DSC season 1 had a really good vibe to it. It was mysterious, serious and the producers had obviously taken some cues from GOT. Then it all fell apart IMHO. I wanted to see more of Captain Georgiou. Not the empress. I'd have liked to have seen the real Lorca.

Beyond that though, somehow I feel Trek has been reduced by the streaming years. It failed to honour it's past, and ultimately, it failed to expand the fan base. Star Trek was a cultural behemoth, nowadays though, I think it's largely forgotten.

Steaming Trek pales into insignificance compared to the incredible competition. Like Pluribus, For All Mankind, The Expanse, Foundation, Murder it, Fallout, Severance, Andor....the list goes on.

I'd like it if the producers would have hired some real scientists and some decent Sci fi writers like Andy Weir (who was rejected!)

For me, it isn't so much missed opportunities for what they didn't do, but rather the missed opportunities for what they did do.

For example, I would have liked for DSC to have taken place post-TUC, rather than shoehorned into ten years prior to TOS. I think that what happened in the show would have made so much more sense if it was in 2300 or so. Have Burnham be Spock's third protege (after Saavik and Valeris) rather than Sarek's adopted daughter whom we never heard of before this. Have the Klingon war be the result of T'Kuvma's assassination of Azetbur rather than the Klingons suddenly becoming aggressive out of nowhere following a 100 year absence (which basically happened before with the Romulans in TNG.)

And for PIC, I would have liked the storyline to be completely different. The early teasers for the show presented a very inaccurate picture of what the show was going to be about. Things like the Short Trek Children of Mars made it look like the biggest plotline was that androids being used as slave labor developed sentience and went rogue, when in fact they had virtually nothing to do with the plot other than being a 'plot device' for the incredibly stupid and nonsensical Zhat Vash condemning their own people to extinction just because they hate AI. I would much rather have gotten a show about actual rogue androids and their motivation for said attack on Utopia Planitia.

If the studio politics had been a little different, the streaming movie might've been an option to produce stories for the last couple years of the cadets in Starfleet Academy if the price-point for full television seasons got too outta hand.

The Tribbles one was absolute gold. CBS Trek is so up and down. One week they hand you something brilliant, then the next three or four weeks they hand you a vomit plated turd.

Consistency was a definite missed opportunity.

I’m kinda both this and the stuff they didn’t do. Like I woulda had Disco set after DS9 and if you had to tie Burnham to a legacy character, make her Michael Yates and have her be Ben and Kassidys daughter. SNW could have been the lost era, etc…

But I also would have loved to see an animated “What If…” type show. Like what Disney did with Marvel. You could have brought in as many legacy actors as possible and recast as necessary.

“What if the Cardassians had discovered the Wormhole”
“What if Riker had commanded Voyager instead of Janeway”
“What if the Andorians made first contact with Humanity instead of the Vulcans…”

Ehh... I'm glad we never got a What If-style show. The over-reliance on fanwank and callbacks were a big enough problem as it was.
