Playmates Toys

New Khan is actually really accurate (I painted the console)

New Spock is fine, the body is good, but the face is not. Everyone found the gloves way too big, but comparing them to the real ones, they're not that much bigger.

Saru is easily the best Disco figure (and character)

New Riker was also criticized a lot, but his face might be more accurate than the old PM one. He can finally do the Riker leg maneuver well, his clothes are intact, I do like him.

The new figures weren't bad - as you say, Khan was excellent, and the Disco figures were very good too.

Kirk, Spock and the TNG boys were just very soft face sculpts. Picard was probably the best.

Overall I much preferred the more caricatured style of the 1990s line. It works better at smaller scales. I think they should have tried to get closer to that style with the 2022 wave, as the new figures aren't really close enough to the older ones to look good on the shelf together.

I don’t mind the visual style much. Like putting a Lower Decks character besides a TNG one. For me it’s more important figures have the same scale.

For the 60th, I kinda had to get Pike, and his shield and laser are quite accurate

Then someone sold a bag of AAs and other random Trek things for so very cheap and we had a great conversation about the deepest details, so he reduced the prices :D

AA Bones looks good, better than I thought

Spock has a great angular face, but his expression is a bit odd

Kirk is surprisingly good, still not quite there, but from certain angles he looks quite accurate

But the main reason I got him was that he came with the very detailed rifle

Got a feeling we are gonna get some more bad news on the MR Trek figures. In their latest newsletter they say to expect an email soon that is just going to cover the figures.

Plus the figures that were supposed to come out this month are still listed as pre-orders on the site. I don’t think my Mariner is coming in July as advertised.

What a cluster fuck.

Have any of the MR figures come out yet?

No, Picard and SNW Spock were supposed to be out this month with Riker and Mariner next month. The pre-orders opened in March last year. They have been pushed back 3 times so far. Another lengthy delay will probably have me cancel the pre-orders I have in.

Have to say I never got a good feeling about them. I would not be surprised if Nacelle end up with the New Trek licence too.

It was weird that they split the Classic Trek license and nu-Trek license. Never made sense to me.

There's actually three licences - the Kelvin stuff is with Hiya Toys.

Ultimately I think fans are more likely to want a shelf of figures that look good next to each other. The MR stuff seemed to be picking up on the Playmates line which didn't sell, and which fans didn't really love.

All the energy with Nacelle so would make sense if they end up with it all. But business isn't about what fans might like!

Because splitting categories allows for more nuanced control of the licensing and business. Instead of having to shop the license if a whole company underperforms they just have to focus on one category.

The MR figures for the live action series have so far looked iffy to me. They certainly don’t have the likenesses of any of the Picard cast at all correct. The Lower Decks figures actually look decent.

I'm pretty sure they are the later Playmates figures, presumably subcontracted by MR.

At the very least their SNW Pike and Spock are since Playmates showed off the prototypes.

I am seeing a few people on social media mention they have finally gotten shipping notices for the June releases. So I was apparently doom and gloom for nothing.

Even if it was justified based on history.

Yeah my assumption is that they are working with them factories in China that produced the Playmates line. Steve Varner did the sculpts for Playmates but there's no indication he's doing MR too.
