However, I will point out that his motivation for fighting the assassins was initially driven by wanting to rescue the young boy who reminded him of his kids. For all of Frank's issues, he's always been driven by the need to protect the innocent, especially children. This is further emphasized at the end when he chose to rescue Royo's shopkeeper and his daughter, who reminds me him specifically of Frank's daughter. He chose to save over vengeance against Ma Gnucci.

It did make sense in that particular second why he decided to storm into the next-door apartment to save the kid. It just didn't make sense to me why he kept fighting after that.

Thematically, I think it was weaker having Frank make the choice twice to save two random kids - in part because the latter one so overshadowed the first.

They got the same actress that played Frank's wife Maria for the Netflix series to return, but Frank's daughter was played by John Bernthal's real world daughter.

Were any of the scenes with his wife new? I thought they just used clips from the Netflix show.

Adrenaline. Rage. Caught up in the moment. Take your pick.

Cool. I'm glad you think saving two children is random and unimportant.

Nope, they were new scenes as Turtletrekker already noted.

I enjoyed the Punisher special, but, oh my god, how many criminal groups were involved in the death of Frank's family?! All that's left is the yakuza and the Chinese triads, and we're done!

It's been so long, I don't even remember why all these criminals got involved. Can someone give me a quick recap? 😅

Interesting how perceptions change. Back in 2002, it was so cool to see that CGI had advanced to the point where it could photorealistically depict Spider-Man doing the kind of acrobatics and contortions he'd only been able to do in comics and cartoons before. Now, CGI is so routine that it's cool to see them doing Spidey stunts practically in live action, with the only digital effect being wire removal.

To further complicate things, this isn't even the first time that Frank has taken out the Gnucci crime family.

The timeline is muddled along with the fact that there are no flashbacks used because Disney likes to maintain a polite legal fiction that these are different versions of the characters who just happen to be played by the same people and have similar back stories. It's a whole thing to try and limit various payments.

So basically the ole we are going to have a character named Tom Paris instead of Nick Locarno type of scam.

Didn't Born Again have flashbacks to the original show? Or am I misremembering.

I didn't like One Last Kill. It really didn't seem to have any point.

To the extent there was a "point" it seems to be that Berenthal wanted to make it as a proof of concept for something else - either a Punisher movie, or his show coming back. Which is why it felt more like an expensive fan film than anything. Regardless, it tread the same ground as shit we've seen before.

Somewhere else someone made the point that if Disney is going to light money on fire doing stuff like this, they really should be making "b-tier" Marvel movies with budgets of $50-$100 million, because they'd probably be profitable for the same reason that mid-tier horror movies have great rates of return.

Thematically, I believe it was supposed to represent Frank moving beyond vengeance as a motivator and instead choosing to be a protector. That's why he chose to save the little girl instead of going after Ma Gnucci. Frank went through a "rubber bullets" phase in the comics, and I wouldn't be surprised if that's what we get in the Spider-Man movie.

I was kind of hoping they'd use One Last Kill to integrate Punisher into the bigger MCU better.

Like, have it be the start of that storyline where Frank got his hands on a War Machine suit.

Too soon. At least let him meet Spider-Man first.

So, here's an notion that popped into my head fully formed while on the freeway this morning. I want to see a TVA story where they are investigating the random murders of vital anchor beings throughout the multiverse, causing these time branches to prematurely unravel. They eventually encounter a being who looks like an elf armed with a gun and pursue him across the Multiverse. Eventually, they catch up to him and Mobius stops him by running him over with a jet ski. "Wow", says Mobius.

B15 asks, "So, who was he? What was his deal anyway?"

"I don't know", Mobius replies, "want to grab some lunch?"

The end. The credits roll. The threat ended. Or is it?

"Elf with a gun will return.. someday."

I'm sorry, that was random. Some of you will get it. It's early and I haven't eaten breakfast. Yeah, I'll behave now.
