Random Trek "Problems" That Bug You (and that you can't let go!)

Because we're all examples of IDIC, we're all bothered by different things, and this especially applies to Trek fans.

What are the things that bug you? They don't have to be things you're necessarily angry about, just things you wish did happen/hadn't happened, etc.

Here are a few (JUST a few! :D) to get us started:

- It started bugging me in 1987 and it still bugs me today: TNG should have had its own theme. The TOS movie theme belongs to the TOS crew!

- Sisko's ultimate fate in "What You Leave Behind."

- Voyager should have been a far better series with writers and producers that fully committed to the premise.

- Star Trek Generations.

- The TNG films

- The way Meyer treated aging in the 23rd century, along with a lot of other things he did. I love a lot about TWOK and TUC, but a lot of things bug me, too.

- Most of seasons 4 - 7 of TNG

- Jadzia's death.

- The destruction of the Defiant. It was unnecessary and robbed the ship of the legendary status she should have kept for decades after.

- What became of Dukat in season seven and that he wasn't killed by Kira.

- Enterprise (way too much to detail here unless someone wants specifics)

- Series 5 not being set on the Enterprise-B and filling the gaps between TUC and TNG.

- The destruction of the original Enterprise. It was unnecessary and the Enterprise-A was never given the chance to live up to its legacy.

Kirk having a repeated story beat in TMP and TWOK.

Uniform rank inconsistencies across all series.

The busyness of the TWOK uniform as a daily work uniform. Too many things to loose track of, especially compared to TOS.

Sisko should have been relieved after his retaliatory attacks on Maquis planets, and was irredeemable after "In the Pale Moonlight."

Admiral Ross betraying Senator Cretak in the interests of some kind of realpolitik.

Section 31 as an organization was a terrible idea.

Spock implying that Rand enjoyed being sexually assaulted by evil Kirk in "The Enemy Within."

I don't think that's what happened. Spock was chiding Rand for her interest in the captain, which she had just expressed to Kirk (and been gently shot down) and was continuing with an infatuated glance when Spock started speaking.

She had obviously inferred that the attraction the "imposter" had for her—apart from his actions—was likely shared by Kirk.

Here are the first 10 things that jump to mind:
  • The transporter in Picard taking shortcuts by using stored DNA information.
  • The interpretation of the Prime Directive in the episode Homeworld.
  • Worf saying that Section 31 is a crucial part of Starfleet Intelligence.
  • All the 'fun with DNA' stories like Threshold, Genesis and Strange New Worlds.
  • The musical episode coming up with a terrible half-assed reason for the singing.
  • Michael Burnham being the main character of the multiverse and also Spock's sister.
  • That episode of Strange New Worlds making the neutral zone 3 miles across and also there's a billion giant Romulan ships waiting on the other side of it.
  • THEY COULDN'T EVEN GET THE COLOUR OF THE ROMULAN BRIDGE RIGHT, HOLY SHIT.
  • Pike being like 'yeah whatever, it's no big deal' when he found out a crew member was a murderer.
  • Owo and Detmer deserved more.

The interpretation of the Prime Directive in the episode Homeworld.

The Prime Directive in the TNG era, generally. As a General Order to starship captains to prevent unnecessary intervention, it makes sense (a decision to intervene should usually be made at a higher level), but as the guiding principle for a civilization, it's abhorrent.

An original theme was created for TNG, it can be heard in the background music on a few S1 episodes and was listed on the soundtrack as "Picard's Theme." Roddenberry decided late in the game he wanted something similar to the TMP theme instead and kept rejecting various pitches until finally deciding "to hell with it, just reuse the TMP theme."

The writers and producers were. UPN had other ideas.

After hearing the original theme, I think he made the right call.

Space Seed, TWOK, and STID. Khan is a completely amoral, horrible character with absolutely no redeeming features. And the way Lt. McGivers was treated in Space Seed was disgusting, she wouldn't have betrayed her captain and crewmates no matter how thralled she was by a man. And I absolutely fail to understand why they chose this one if they had to make a feature movie as a sequel to an episode.

The Changeling. I quite like the episode otherwise, but the way NOMAD was confused by Uhura's female brain badly enough to render her unconscious was just the sort of casual sexism that has made TOS age quite poorly. When we watched it with our son, 14 at the time, he was like :wtf:

Turnabout Intruder. The whole premise that women couldn't be captains is off-putting. Even if the story was well crafted otherwise, the premise utterly ruined it for me. It didn't really help matters that it was the last episode they ever broadcast, even if it wasn't intended as a finale (because the concept of a finale didn't exist then, episodic shows just ended).
