First, who gets to define what one means by “former glory?” You seem to appreciate TNG, DS9 and VOY the most. I’m a TOS/DS9/SNW guy. We really only agree on one show. And there are others out there who disagree with both of us. So how do you try to speak to the fanbase (which is, let’s be fair, getting older and dying) and bring in new fans at the same time?
Second, we’ve had what you ask for with Lower Decks, Prodigy and SFA (even if the later isn’t ALWAYS a ship). (SNW has many likable characters, but not all of them are new and the ship certainly isn’t new.) Still, how do you do what you want without falling back into the formula of TNG/VOY/ENT? It’s more than played out.
Honestly, you can speak to ten different Star Trek fans and get fourteen competing definitions on what makes Star Trek good.
We actually agree on two shows, DS9 and TOS.
As for SNW, it's quite acceptable and my objections about doom and gloom and unlikeable characters
doesn't include SNW. My only personal objection was about the "replacement actors for the TOS characters.
As for a dying fanbase, the fanbase of TNG, DS9 and VOY aren't that old.
And why not try to attract the newer fanbase to Star Trek when it was at it's best?
Unfortunately many newer fans have been exposed to doom and gloom series and movies, like Game Of Thrones where bald bearded gnomes waves with swords, with torture scenes, gore and blood from an actually dystopian era of mankind for such a long time that they have been adapted to it and think that it's the way to make series and movies.
Wouldn't it be nice if Star trek could be an alternative to that for the newer generation.
I have nothing against Prodigy and Lower Decks but both are
cartoons!
Is this what good Star Trek had been reduced to?
OK, I actually like funny cartoons but I always consider cartoons to be just that, like for example Donald Duck or Family Guy.
If we at least could have animated series with characters which looks exactly as if they were played by real actors. That would be a real new-start for classic Trek.
Here you go again, making ultimate statements. Plenty of fans loved and still love ENT. Who are you to decide it should not have been made simply because you do not like it?
People like what you dislike. So you simply stop watching it and let others enjoy what they like.
I mean, just those words alone... 'As I wrote above". As if your statements are Godlike and The Final Word. They are not. You once replied to my post saying 'why do people get angry when I voice my opinion?'. Because you don't voice opinions, you make statements and expect others to agree with you.
Fine, you don't like ENT. I'm fine with that. But say 'Enterprise was not the type of Star Trek show I enjoy but if others do, than good for them.'
THAT is was an adult way of communicating an opinion is.
For fuck sake.... Anyway, if the mods feel they need to warn me or ban me or something like that, I accept that as a consequence of my actions. I know, comment on the post, not the poster. But this needed to be said.
Have you ever heard about something called "cordial debates"?
Anyway, your objections are noted.
Let us now move on or actually move back to the
subject of the debate which is Star Trek, not some sort of trial about me and my opinions in that case.
You might as well have said it to a brick wall.
Sometimes the world need brick walls, in this case people who dare to stand up for their opinions and refuse to be bullied.
Only if there is an unwillingness to learn and grow.
Sorry, but I'm not interesting in learning about things I'm not interested in. It just doesn't work for me.
I mean, if someone like me has grown up with hard rock and heavy metal, it's impossible to start liking rap and meoow-meooow-meeow lightweight "pop". That's a huge step back.
The same with quality series in contrast to doom, gloom and gore.
It's like changing a great house to a mud hut and can hardly be called "growth".
With that said, I do have other interests besides Star Trek and heavy metal which I've try to explore from time to time.
I don't see how "Ds9" can be the peak of "TNG Trek" when "TNG Trek" is named after... TNG.
It also never reached the viewership that The Next Generation did, it is very literally the beginning of the long, slow decline toward cancellation for that era.
But DS9 was the ultimate high spot of Star trek when it comes to quality.
Great characters, great stories and a changing scenario with many interesting twists and turns.
There are fwe series which are so complex and enetrtaining as DS9 and I'm not referring only to Star Trek and SF here.
Paramount+ has approximately 79 million subscribers as of the end of 2025. Disney+ has approximately 196 million subscribers.
While not all subscribers watch either show, it’s hard to get close to the numbers you want them to reach without increasing their subscriber count. With Paramount losing Taylor Sheridan, that will be tougher. Because Trek certainly isn’t bringing in a ton of viewers. Again, why I’m hopeful the joining of P+ and HBO Max will get more eyes on new Star Trek.
Well, good luck to them!
