If I had to guess, they ended up shortening the title because it sounded better.

If I had to guess, they ended up shortening the title because it sounded better.

Every time I hear this movie mentioned, my brain harks back to Siskel & Ebert’s review of it where one of them shrugs and says, ‘I still don’t know the title means.’

Because they decided to go with Dalton (and much as I'm a huge fan of Sam Neill Dalton made a better Bond). At any rate Neill has said multiple times that he didn't really want the role, he's suggested he was bullied into auditioning by his agent.

Utility belt stirrings were nearly as high during that convention as they were when first watching THUNDERBALL. And on the same day, when my ex-best friend temporarily lost his camera, I suggested the radical notion of retracing his most recent steps. So we did....and he found that camera right where he left it....on Caroline Munro's table.

Caroline's nicknames for us were ''Frick'' and ''Frack.'' (Perhaps an unintentional mixed homage to Wint, Kidd or Nick-Nack?)

There's a line of dialogue in AVTAK that sort of reinforces the theory that the Robert Brown M is indeed Admiral Hargreaves from TSWLM. Tibbet(Patrick Macnee) addresses M as "Admiral" when they're at Max Zorin's horse race.

But Bernard Lee's M was also an admiral (in uniform in YOLT, and Bond asks the butler if the admiral is in when he visits M's house in OHMSS), and the series never really does anything to suggest Robert Brown is playing a different character.

As far as I'm concerned Hargreaves was promoted from the Royal Navy to the Double-oh branch after Messersvy(Bernard Lee) died. There was that brief interval in FYEO where Bill Tanner steps in to run M's office but Hargreaves replaces Tanner pretty quickly.

Definitely unintentional, "Frick and Frack" being a long standing nickname for any seemingly inseparable duo.

Me too. Recasting Bond and Moneypenny didn't also mean M was the same man from 1962 through 2002.
