“When he was married to Kassidy it was the happiest months of their lives”
Setting aside that most of the events you mentioned happened before he married Kasidy, I think he meant in terms of family interactions.

Odd it worked for me a minute ago

Michael had issues last night, so it might be geo locked.
Maybe? I've seen the first link posted elsewhere, but every time I've tried to open it I got "Oops! That page can’t be found." And I'm in the US; I'd be surprised if they locked it out there️. 🤷

Hopefully between the two links everyone can get to it one way or another.

I liked it, but I seem to be in the minority on that one. But it did hit me quickly that it was going to be very divisive and a bridge too far for many people.
I think it might work better on a rewatch, knowing the episode isnt just that, and also with the hindsight that is the arc of SAM trying to be the best emissary she can be by doing things her way. But when watching it and I saw the CBS Productions thing get crossed out I was like "...oh no..."

“When he was married to Kassidy it was the happiest months of their lives”

Um…

The Defiant was destroyed
The Breen joined the Dominion and attacked San Francisco
Julian uncovered a genocide plot by Federation citizens
Ezri and Worf were POWs
Odo was dying
Kira was sent off to train Cardassians how to be resistance fighters.
Ben ordered Worf to kill Gowron and take control of the Klingon High Council
Sarah Sisko kept appearing in visions telling him he was going to know nothing but sorrow
Starfleet lost their only beachhead in Dominion space at Chin’toka
Kai Winn was sleeping with hitler trying to release the Devil from prison.

HAPPIEST TIMES EVERYONE
In war time you find happiness everywhere you can.

For them, being together brought the happiness despite the circumstances.

Oh wait - tenmei linked me the article (thank you!)

What I find odd is this part:

Tawny: We love that timing. First of all, I’ll keep mine brief, because I think you should hear from Cirroc on this. But for me, it is not hard to honor the legacy of someone who told us and continues to tell us how we should be thinking about him, Mr. Brooks. Everyone knows the story of Mr. Brooks asking the showrunners to add that line into the finale of Deep Space Nine where he said that he would come back for his family. Okay, that tells us as future writers, we have to assert that he did indeed come back, and we should have Jake himself say it, and the legacy that he leaves behind is one of love and one of just incredible sacrifice for his family and for the franchise, and in a meta way, that’s the same legacy that the character’s legacy is the same as Mr. Brooks’ legacy. So it, it was kind of just connecting all of those dots for me. So yeah, simple.

So... they DID "assert that he did indeed come back"??? I'm so confused.

SAM and Kamala Khan is the cross franchise crossover I never knew I needed.

Well, that was an amazing experience and a wonderful way to celebrate the 60th anniversary. For the 30th anniversary, DS9 looked back on TOS and for the 60th anniversary Starfleet Academy looks back on Deep Space 9. An appropriate full circle moment.

I wish The Ready Room was still a thing. I would love to see Wil Wheaton and Cirroc Lofton chat it up about being the kid on the set. It's hard to fathom that he's 47(!). I will be keeping my eyes peeled for the next episode of The 7th Rule.

I almost feel as the Doctor should have asked SAM, "have you spoken to Professor Dax?" I mean, it's absolutely possible that he wasn't aware of the relationship between Dax and Sisko, but if he had been exposed to that fact at any point in his lifetime, he should remember it. At least that's how I understand it. And, of course, it would have ruined the reveal at the end. I hope we see Professor Dax again.

I was beginning to think that perhaps the online reviewers overstated things until the 1-2-3 punch at the end of the recording of Avery brooks, the dedication to Avery Brooks and the DS9 finale theme.

10/10

The B plot is what kept it from going Spinal Tap and getting an 11. Wonderful to see DS9 finally get the accolades it deserves. TNG got its moment in Picard, Voyager got its moment in Prodigy and now DS9 has had its moment in Academy.

Then that line by Sam at the end wherever you are Benjamin you were a good father and raised a great son, was a bit unfortunate.

If that was the intent I wished they would have directly stated that the book contains Sisko's life on Bajor and Jake never published it since Sisko is such a revered figure.
Why, we don't know if he returned back to the Prophets when his time with his family came to an end.
He may have eventually returned to the Celestial Temple and SAM is just conveying her thoughts to him.

BTW: I gave this one an 8. I was never a huge DS9 fan, but I did enjoy watching the episodes back then.

That's weird because the Jake... whatever it is implies that he believed he came back but not that he actually did. It seems like it's left as a matter of faith.

Darem is also 17. We see it on his bio in this episode
Yeah, I think I have more questions but at least I can chalk it up to Darem being an alien. lol

Good episode, though Ake's B story dragged the whole thing down something fierce.

I think that may well be the case. She'd already accessed the Bajoran Orb and it went dark, so maybe that meant a connection was made to someone in the Celestial Temple, but it turned out to be Jake rather than his father?
That wasn't the real the real Orb, it was a holographic reproduction.

I did find it odd they omitted the fact that Jake has a sibling... but I guess it wasn't important to the plot (they could have at least fixed the family tree).
You remember the part of the episode plot where they talk about how the Bajoran's basically deified Sisko?

I'm guessing Kassidy's pregnancy was not made public to avoid that falling on her daughter.

They might've made it a bit too subtle, but it looks like the intent was to imply that he did come back.
Oh he definitely did, people are just forgetting that the Jake we saw was a holographic recreation based on the words in the book.

So you need to look underneath the words said for the intent of the writer.

Trying to pin down Sci-Fi alien ages is like attempting to catch the wind with a fishnet.

We have no idea how long their planetary cycles are or how they actually age.
So 17 alien years could equal anything from 5 to 20 Earth years.

Wonderful episode. As a huge Niner, I absolutely loved it. I could’ve done without Newsome playing that character, but overall it was still great.

I thought I’d end up hating SAM the most, but that definitely changed. The dinner scene with the cadets was especially powerful—you could really feel a sense of community despite their differences. And honestly, that’s probably one of the most valuable lessons kids can learn today: we are all different and still a community.

10/10

I always took that as the Prophets knowing that Sisko would have to abandon his family (or leave for an indeterminate period of time I suppose), so their pain would have been avoidable if he simply didn't marry her. I guess I never took it as, it's better to have a few months of life than nothing at all which I guess is the other way to look at it.

I assume he was referring to their relationship as being the happiest time. Sisko and Kassidy were in newlywed bliss. They were happy in their marital relationship together despite the bad things going on around them.

You have to assume they're using some standard period of time though, because what does programming someone to be "17" mean a Kasq year could be a thousand Earth years? lol

It's not really a big deal, it's just an oddly specific choice for an alien species to decide on 17 as the arbitrary age they wanted the program to be, and then specifically what they think an organic 17 year old acts like.

I hate that they had to go and mess with the ending of DS9 and make Sisko seem like a liar...

Hundreds of years in the future and they can't stop messing with legacy Trek.

The HMS Bounty went to warp right after retrieving George and Gracie, and was well within Earth's atmosphere at the time.
As we now know that going back in time sends you to a different timeline it can be assumed that they actually wiped out an alternate Earth by doing that.

There is one aspect I thought was awful. Not the B plot, not the "comedy", but the fact that this episode all but confirmed that Benjamin Sisko never returned. I think most Trekkies know that Avery Brooks objected to the original dialogue where Sisko said he would not return and live out his existence with the Prophets. Wanting to reinforce positive images of African-American fathers - a rewrite was created so that Sisko said he would eventually return to Kassidy.
THIS.

"He was never seen again." Okay, fuck you.
And to put it another way...This.
