SIAP: Is this good news?

I want the show to succeed.

Well they are comparing full season averages of shows in their 3rd seasons to 2 or 3 episodes of Academy in its 1st. The averages of snw are lower than its first and second season. So Academy will probably lose viewers as it goes on. Its certainly not a hit and cant compete with Taylor Sheridan shows. Not near the success of Tulsa King and nowhere near the success of Landman.

But youll get a second season because it filmed already. So it doesn't matter.

Viewership numbers aren't arbitrary, they represent how much the show is making the network.
And we know the profit margin them, yes? We know the targets, desired outcome and money made?

If not, then it is arbitrary because we have no clue as to what it means beyond our assumptions which are logically flawed.

Academy is off to a decent start compared to other recent live-action Star Trek seasons. It has neither stumbled out of the gate nor shown the ability to bring in audiences outside the current Par+ Trek fan base at launch. It is also much smaller than Taylor Sheridan programs as are all the other Trek shows.
Huh, fancy that. And here I thought the sky was falling because Academy was the worst thing ever to have happened to the franchise and Kurtzman was about to be fired for the 80th time this decade!

But youll get a second season because it filmed already. So it doesn't matter.
I knew this response was coming, no matter what the data showed.

Doctor Who got a second season on Disney+. I wouldn't call this a good indicator.

Let's hope it doesn't go the same route. I'm planning to get a Paramount+ sub next month.

The linked source mentions that in compared to the first two episodes of the other Star Trek series (PIC S3; SNW S3) it is described as "still well ahead".

Of course, raw viewership comparison isn't necessarily enough information to tell if it's successful. SFA had its first two episodes drop on the same day in January. SNW S3 started with two episodes in July, but PIC S3 only started with releasing one episode in February. Those and other factors could affect the early viewership numbers.

Viewership and demographics may matter more for ad revenue, which I presume is more important as Paramount+ gains ad subscribers. It probably also matters if the audience attracts different subscribers than other shows (like Sheridan shows) and drives some subscription revenue.

My guess is that the audience is different and younger enough from other shows (with more merchandising revenues) that they could tolerate somewhat lower viewership than the average show on the service. However, I have no idea how good the cited numbers are. SNW S3 viewership wasn't strong enough to support a full season 5, and Picard Season 3 might not have been popular enough to support a Los Angeles filmed spinoff without California tax credits.

The Sheridan shows are about as popular as TNG used to be. As popular as star trek used to be. Kurtzman Trek can't even get 3 million viewers now. There are food challenge youtube channels that get more views. Not good.
Who cares?

I thought you wanted Star Trek under Kurtzman to fail? Why in the world should be people give a crap about numbers? We are not paid by Paramount*.

*except for the select few; you know who you are :shifty:

Keep moving those goalposts - none of the current shows, even your sainted Picard season 3, are as popular as Sheridan's shows.

Hell, no show today is as popular as television shows from 30+ years ago. The market is vastly different and more fractured.

This ain't the gotcha you seem to think it is - context matters.

Landman 16 mil.vs Academy 2 mil. Eight times more. How's that for context?

And Picard only had 61% of Academy's viewership. And by the time TNG ended in 1994, the show was only averaging 9.78 million.

And the top-rated TV shows when TNG went off the air were pulling 20% of the entire American television market, going right back to my original point that comparing TV from 30 years ago to today is a fools' errand.

Picard season 1 and 2 were as bad as academy is now. By season 3 many fans had left. By season 2 were will academy be? Probably in the same boat.
