Spoilers Starfleet Academy General Discussion Thread

Remember, Kurtzman's the same guy who continues to work on Star Trek despite having been fired a dozen times already.

That SOB. I heard he also broke a flat screen TV because he was so mad he was fired. Then refused to leave. How did security not kick him out? Because apparently along as being a “shitty showrunner,” he also is a ninja.

There's no Saint Terry!

(Hallowed be his name!)

Just an odd thought. Can Alex Kurtzman really be fired from his own company? I'm talking about the traditional pink slip. There are contractual agreements in place between Secret Hideout and Paramount (or whoever they are this week) to make Star Trek. Paramount can choose to discontinue the relationship at the end of the contract. Or they could buy themselves out of it. I'm sure escape clauses exist.

The fact that Kurtzman's company continues to produce Trek for the foreseeable future means they have to be happy to some degree with the reception/viewer totals of the current output.

Personally I just thought Picard season three was incredibly dull, stupid, uninteresting and — worst of all — boring. I can honestly say that I have never found watching any season of Trek as tedious as this one. I already hated season two, but in hindsight, with a few years gone by and with the dreadfulness of that third season, it might actually have been the superior season, because it had more interesting ideas. Season three managed that I actively didn’t want to see any more of the original The Next Generation crew.

Unfortunately, this is how I've felt about much of the live-action fare kicked out by CBS. It commits the worst crime one can in entertainment, it is boring.

Having worked in contract law, there definitely would be a clause for termination. More than likely that would favor CBS in most situations but if CBS was unhappy with Secret Hideout’s work, they would likely have a buyout clause based upon years left in the contract. The company is guaranteed x amount of money over a period of time and if CBS terminates based upon poor performance, they would only be allowed a percentage of x.

This is the most ridiculous thing I read this week. Star Trek: Picard was literally made by the production company founded by Alex Kurtzman, but you want to make it sound like he had nothing to do with it. Matalas had creative control and handled day-to-day production, sure, but the guy at the top was still Alex Kurtzman. I don’t understand what the obsession is with wanting Kurtzman to have nothing to do with it. But also, I’m not sure why I bother asking, but what’s the metric for Picard season three being “the most popular season of Trek”? Not that it would change even one bit how I personally thought it was one of the worst seasons of the franchise ever, but I’m curious.

Im talking season 3. Kurtzman stepped back. It was all Matalas. Matalas wrote it and directed it. Kurtzman was one of many executive producers. Picard season 3 was the most popular.

Berman technically oversaw both DS9 and Voyager but it has been stated that his attention switched to Voyager when it premiered onward so DS9 was more free to do "it's own thing" On paper Kurtzman has overseen most of modern trek. Doesn't mean at the same level in practically or reality in some cases.

It also doesn't mean show runners have carte blanche either. There's some level of oversight in productions.

If Berman's name was going out on something, he had a say in it. He never came across as a hand's off type of boss.

Looking at the production company vanity cards at the end of an episode of Picard season 3 (CBS Studios is at the beginning), one finds:

  • Secret Hideout (Alex Kurtzman’s production company)
  • Roddenberry Entertainment (duh)
  • Weed Road Pictures (Akiva Goldsman’s production company)
  • Paramount+
Those are the only four production companies listed. This means that one of these companies, likely Secret Hideout as they were contracted by CBS to do Star Trek, hired Terry Matalas to run the show. Likely, this was a contract role for seasons 2 and 3. Matalas likely pitched to Kurtzman and the brass at CBS and Paramount+ and had to obtain approval. Matalas didn’t do this in a vacuum and anyone who believes that to be the case really does need to learn a little more about how this all works. Showrunners do not often have carte Blanche to do whatever they want. They have to go up the chain, just like any other job. Because at the end of the day, it’s not canon or treknology that theyre selling, it’s subscriptions to Paramount+.

Berman's minimal involvement with DS9 as been recounted a lot over the years, like the probably apocryphal story about when Stephen Hawking filmed his cameo on TNG, Berman took him on a tour of the studio which included a visit to DS9's Promenade set. While they were there, two stagehands doing work took notice of them. One commented "now there's someone I never expected to see on this set." The other responded "yeah, and he brought Professor Hawking with him."

Still, we know Berman had some input on DS9. Behr had to get Berman's consent to promote Sisko to Captain at the end of the third season, which reportedly took some convincing. Then later, Behr wanted to make Sisko an Admiral during the Dominion War, which Berman would allow saying "Star Trek is about the Captains. That's the line you used on me when you wanted him promoted to Captain a few years ago."

So, what we walk away with was that Berman was clearly paying attention to what went on with DS9 and making decisions he felt was best for the show. Sometimes listening to his underlings, sometimes not.

Yes it is, it's just not proof you're willing to accept.
Yes.
You’re goddamn delusional

Kurtzman did the same thing on Season 3 as he did on all the shows under his purview

Season 3 was also a terrible season

You're wrong. Its the highest rated season on rotten tomatoes. Kurtzman stepped back from season 3. Its all true. I put the evidence up already. The first two seasons that kurtzman ran are low rated. Just because its a tough pill to swallow especially if you're a fan of kurtzmans writing it doesn't make it not true. Im so very sorry.
