Spoilers Starfleet Academy General Discussion Thread

Kurtzman there. There's a reason matalss is no longer there. He made the most popular seaskn of trek. When kurtzman got back from his failed Clarice series he didnt back matalas like he should have. Instead of legacy we got the terrible academy. I am so glad matalas got a tos Connie in there.
You’re goddamn delusional

Kurtzman did the same thing on Season 3 as he did on all the shows under his purview

Season 3 was also a terrible season

Same obsession with Berman having nothing to do with DS9.
Which is equally ridiculous, yes. There’s a lot to criticize over how Rick Berman handled some elements of Trek during his tenure, but at the same time he was still the guy at the top calling the shots, being responsible for some of the most classic episodes of Trek ever produced. Some people are just able to view this stuff in black and white.

The desperation to divorce Kurtzman from the saintly Picard season is this level of cognitive dissonance:

I totally understand the frustration, but I will have to insist that people don’t resort to personal attacks like this one. Don't do it again.

Same goes for everyone else, of course. We understand that discussion can get heated and we’re not going to start calling out every instance of tempers running high, but we won’t let it descent into people constantly questioning the mental state of the people they are disagreeing with. Let’s not get this so far that we have to hand out warnings.

I’m confused. Wasn’t Alex Kurtzman an executive producer on all three seasons of Star Trek: Picard? How could anything be “slipped in right under his nose”?
Executive Producer is just a fancy title they give people to bump their pay grade or make them feel important.

Just like Lower Decks was Mike McMahon’s vision.
Just like Prodigy was the Hageman brothers’ vision.
Just like SNW is the vision of Akiva Goldman and Henry Alonso Myers.

All with Kurtzman’s oversight.

Just like Matalas and Picard season 3.
Kurtzman had almost no input in Lower Decks or Prodigy.

Picard S3 retains all the hallmarks of Kurtzman-produced Star Trek, surely:
- old plot points, characters, and premises being resurrected out of context
- complete inability to stay focused on any one plot
- standard plot template (dramatic villain appears, heroes have "dark night of the soul" and yell at each other, everyone rallies for a big action finale where they resolve the problem with an explosion while giving dopey speeches about togetherness and friendship)
- heroes discover a DARK CONSPIRACY that reaches into the very heart of the Federation
- quippy dialogue
- every situation devolves into a firefight, ship battle, or bladed combat
- legacy characters brought back to be violently killed after four seconds of screentime (I'm never 100% sure why Icheb being instagibbed is unacceptable while Shelby being torn apart off-screen is fine)

The only real difference from Picard S1/S2 is that it's a bit less interested in projecting "prestige" and is much more openly an action-adventure, and I suppose it ditches some of the corporate-therapy tone that defines a lot of this era's output, but it still feels exactly like the usual stuff to me. The writing credits show it was written by the same people as the first two seasons (Matalas also being credited as a writer on S2).

Clarice AIRED in February - June 2021.
Picard Season 3 was in production from September 2021 - March 2022.
So, Kurtzman was working on a canceled show during production of a show that he was EP on that had massive changes occuring? As always, a little bit of research goes a very long way.
Remember, Kurtzman's the same guy who continues to work on Star Trek despite having been fired a dozen times already.
