Are you "aging out" of Star Trek?

The style of TV storytelling has changed radically over the last few decades. The fact that you can't get into the new stuff might have nothing to do with your age, just what you're used to.

For me, I don't think I'll ever age out of "Star Trek." But I am changing my opinions on certain episodes and characters as I get older. In particular, I have far more appreciation for Tuvok, and Vulcans in general, than I did as a kid. I used to find them boring. I also used to think that I would just naturally become more mature with age. Maybe most people do, but I seem to have to make major efforts to behave like an adult. Emotional control is a daily effort.

I've aged out of Trek in the sense that the streaming-era material doesn't really do it for me. I think I'm so stuck on '80s and '90s Trek simply because it's what I grew up with and what hits a pleasant nostalgic note.
Probably one of the most honest assessments I've seen for when something just doesn't work for a person. Well put 🍻

I did lose interest in new Star Trek from ID, I don't think that was just age but just not liking the direction the reboot went with (I did after become more interested in the original series and later Deep Space Nine) but at least more recently I have become less interested in SF/Fantasy generally, still like a lot but a lot that I hadn't gotten into before has, does tend to feel a little too fantastical and weird and unbelievable/unrelatable and OTOH with umpteen sequels a little too desperate but also too not in line with the earlier material.

Me when I realize I responded to this thread last month with something similar and then forgot: "Whoops."

You know I'm getting old when my memory starts to go. :wah:
😂....funny. I almost did the same thing just now. I typed out this huge response and forgot to check to see if my Bonanza icon was on the thread marker. It was and I went and checked my original responses. Tbf I don't think its really an age thing. The Internet has become much more imbedded in our lives (since 2001 when I joined here) that we may not spend as much time here as we used to and divide our posting on other sites. So things get muddled and forgotten quicker now.

I have been trying to post more at Trekbbs the last year or so. Still not as much as 25 years ago. (Oh my TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO??? 😨)
😁

So fear not you are not the only one. 😎

I've aged out of everything, in the sense that I don't experience current things the same way I did older things. I presume a default of half of that being that everything changes & the other half being that I change. Both of those inevitabilities are good & fair

Regarding Star Trek, that's meant I don't consume it like I once did, & certain titles don't appeal to me as much, & objectively that kind of was always the case. I never even really cared for Voyager & Enterprise, initially, but over time, I've found aspects of them that I did ultimately enjoy

I assume that same truth may well apply, at some point, to the full breadth of the franchise. There was a time when I consumed Star Trek content almost obsessively. It would be the epitome of insanity to think I should feel that way forever about a thing, or that they who make it are obligated to continue feeding that unquenchable satiation. Who am I to merit such favor?

Star Trek has now become a buffet. I will serve myself from it accordingly, as one who understands that not everything on it will be to my tastes, nor do they even necessarily compliment each other, on a particularly singular palate. I've aged out of expecting to appreciate Star Trek the way I once did... & Shouldn't that be true of any relationship?

Back in the day I was watching the films/shows, buying the books (fiction and non fiction) and picking up the occasional piece of merch. Today I stick to the shows. The tie in stuff just doesn't appeal to me anymore.

I watch it all. I feel much more emotionally connected to the 1964-2005 stuff, but there's some very good stuff in the streaming era and I'm open to all of it even if I don't like it all.

I never really got into the "Associated Merchandise" with the vast majority of franchises I enjoy.

Obviously there were a few exceptions where I got a few pieces here & there, but I generally never cared for the 'Merch'.

I was always a collector of the shows themselves.

I don't think it's about age. I was born in 1979, grew up on TOS and watched TNG, DS9, VOY and ENT live. I still love those shows!

I did enjoy the three reboot films, but I think most of Kurtzman Trek just isn't Star Trek, and it just isn't that good.

I loved Picard season 3 and I was very eager for a Star Trek Legacy show. But they're not making it.
I wanted to LOVE Disco, but it just isn't good Star Trek. Also the woke stuff annoys me.

I thought SNW was much better in season 1, minus the silly episode, the Andorian and the doctor's daughter thing.
But I was still excited for season 2 with the daughter and Andorian gone. And yes, apart from the musical episode I loved season 2. Together with PIC season 3 it's the only Trek I loved in the new era.
Then season 3 came and I thought the writing was lazy and bad. Even what they did with the Gorn is so repetitive of the Borg writing on TNG. Also Chapel not knowing what she wants with Spock and so on dragged on. I do like the new Kirk, but he gets dragged in for no reason most of the time. I hope season 4 and 5 are more on par with season 2, or better.

And Academy, where do I begin... I thought Disco was rock bottom, but this show makes that one look amazing. I hope Kurtzman is replaced when his contract ends and someone like Matalas, who actually knows Trek, can take over and make Trek great again.

I don't even mind PIC Season 3 and I recognize it was shameless fanwank on steroids and dumb as hell. We don't need an entire live-action series like that.

Gods no. PIC3 is a prime example of why fans shouldn't make Star Trek. We don't need a "greatest hits album"

It was by no means perfect, but I'm happy it took TNG forward and reunited the cast. I do think it was better than Insurrection and Nemesis. It was a nice sendoff for that cast. Also I did like Seven getting the captain's chair, and both Geordi's and Picard's children being on board, I really liked both characters. There was no woke stuff in the season. I could easily watch the new adventures of that crew in a universe that also has the DS9 and VOY peeps.
