the reviews i've seen say that the first three episodes are to get the general audiences in, then the Trek tropes start flowing by episode 4. Sadly , some people may write it off after episode 1. I've heard ep 5 is awesome , so that's the one i'm really waiting for .

I remember Prodigy took until the Kobayashi Maru episode to really grab me .

There were plenty of Trek tropes in episode 1 and unfortunately a shit load of technobable too. (And I liked the episode enough to rate it a 7.)

Ugh. Just skimming through YouTube for music videos and I see one after another hate videos directed towards SA. Not even bothering to look at any of them since the thumbnails are all saying how the show is trash and how Trek is dead (again). I suspect a great deal of it is just clickbait to get some views and likes for monetization. Hate sells.

it's so frustrating. So many clickbait hate videos. I find the hate really tiresome.

Not saying people can't have criticisms of SFA, but their criticism is not constructive.

I don't think SFA is perfect (no Trek show is) but i think it's pretty good so far

I've got a chrome app called 'BlockTube' that can hide youtube channels you don't want to see. Every time I see a video like that I just block the channel

Mind you that will only block them in your browser, so if you use the mobile app they'll still show up.

Youtube really needs a native way to block channels.

I just want state that I haven't seen "Starfleet Academy" . . . yet. But my sister has. She thinks it sucks. Before you think she is some kind of "anti-woke" believer, she's not. Like me, she is the complete opposite. But she thinks the show sucks. And like myself, she believes the Star Trek franchise should end . . . right now or the immediate future.

I watched the first ep last night and quite enjoyed it.

You are still supposed to kill the person once you have the upper hand?

These aren't civilians and that scene made a mockery of everything they were saying they stood for. Part of the job is it isn't easy to show mercy to people who are trying to kill you. The captain/commandant or whatever she is failed to show how a Starfleet officer is supposed to handle conflict.

I don't think these cadets have even been sworn in yet as full cadets... they were on their way to Starfleet Academy. So technically, they could still be considered civilians.

So Ake was protecting a ship full of civilians.

And even if they were considered full cadets just by having the uniform on, they were still students. And they were still untrained, because they haveb't even started their first day of class. So absolutely, Ake and the other officers had a duty to protect them, and given how quickly they were crippled and how little time they had to stop another possible attack, destroying the pieate ship was absolutely the right thing to do. (And as we learn in tje second episode, they seem to be quite ruthless. Such enemies are not ones you give a second chance to attack and destroy you.)

My family never, ever liked some of the stuff I watched and vice versa. I never used their likes as a guide to my own enjoyment, but then that's just me.

I haven't watched it yet, will do so in the weekend. Quick non spoiler question: Did they explain the Betazoid not having black eyes? Or was it a visual retcon/they ignored continuity / TPTB didn't bother to do research?

It really doesn't. As far as pilots go, it's right up there with Emissary and Broken Bow.

I love that we can all happily acknowledge that Broken Bow is one of the best Star Trek premieres. Was a rough few years back in the early noughties getting caught up in defending that show every week.

The Athena did not have the upper hand. They’d escaped the initial attack, but beyond that had not done any damage to their attacker so another attack was clearly going to follow. They’d escaped had to eliminate the enemy, plus we know from both episodes that these pirates are an aggressive adversary so Starfleet have prior history with them.

You mean after they just executed the crew of another ship without offering surrender?

They murdered everyone instead of having scanners or simply have analyzed the likely ports where the weapons were coming from?

I just assumed everyone beamed back over to the ship alongside Braka and they destroyed an empty ship, though I realise there's no indication of that in hindsight.

Yes, but their attackers ship didn't have shields.

So those same shots that destroyed it could have just as easily knocked out it's weapons and engines.

It probably won't get a third season, but not through any fault of it's own.

Fact is Paramount is in a bad place money and leadership wise right now so is killing off pretty much anything it can get away with.
