I guess there were Cheronians offworld when their planet was burning rubble and dead cities in 2268. Makes at least some sense. Any planet where individuals can live for 50,000 years, have warp travel and even invisibility cloaks more advanced than any encountered by Federation science should have colonies or settlements in other star systems.

I wonder if the second part of the line "Some of you are the first of your species, some the last." was a reference to the Cheronian, or some other character(s) that they'll expand upon later.

No, they really couldn't.
Yes, they could.

The Burn doesn't add anything narrativly that the "Dominion War/Living Construct Hijacking/Synth Attack/Supernova/Borg Hijacking" couldn't have been used as a substitute for.

They really didn’t. I was skeptical of the time frame when they announced the show, but having now seen it I think it works exceptionally well. The Burn backstory is the perfect way to frame a new generation of cadets being tasked with rebuilding a world they have never even known. That just wouldn’t work as well a couple of years after Picard, when the entire galaxy had been living in relative peace for decades. Plus, the future setting helps making the world of SFA feel fresh and interesting again.
Which could have just as easily been a new generation of cadets being tasked with rebuilding the world after the Borg Hijacking wiped out most of Starfleet.

So, first impressions.

First ten minutes I was like, oh no. They're going dark. They're portraying Starfleet like they're the Jedi Council, corrupt and out of touch. But thankfully that was only how they were before the events of Discovery and they're doing Hopeful Trek. The idea of the captain trying to make amends for the mistakes she made back when Starfleet wasn't quite Starfleet.

Liking the main cast. Science loving Klingon, female Gem'Hadar (I hope they eventually give us our expo dump for how that's possible 900 years later). Autism coded holo-groupie. And I like that the problem solutions are true ensemble-driven and not just one character doing everything, it looks like they're not going to neglect secondary characters like Discovery.

The actual threat in this episode felt just a little bit contrived. Moose feels like a Harvey Mudd type, and is very effective in that capacity but isn't threatening enough to be a main villain. It kind of felt like technobabble took over in the progress from safe to crippled to safe.

Overall I give a 6 or a 7 to the premiere. Also I want to like it. It's not the Trek I wanted, but the Incels are being so obnoxious about hating it I want it to be great just to piss them off.

BTW, were the aliens who were holding Caleb prisoner at the start the Torothans from Enterprise Desert Crossing?
Yes. they even have the chin tattoos.
Though the Thoroth was just the name of one of the clans, the species was never given a name.

Picard was awful. Who the fuck wants more of that?

Giamatti as Braka was the best thing in the pilot, as were he and Hunter in their scenes together.

Caleb is insufferable.

The pilot was okay, but built on a predictable, by-the-numbers Trek plot.

Wow. Color me unsurprised on the negative reaction from a certain poster. I’m shocked. Can you see how shocked I am?

I can't stand Caleb. Hes an obnoxious idiot. At least someone called him out in the second episode about calling his mommy and putting the ship in danger. So embarrassing. Everyone heard the stupid letter he sent to his mom. Lol
