Spoilers Starfleet Academy General Discussion Thread

Equipment can only run so long as you have the resources to maintain it. Given the immense upheavals in the galaxy due to the Burn, it's easy to conjecture that things returned to a scarcity environment real quick when very few warp-capable ships were still around to make the trip from system to system.
It is very easy. The idea that things just keep on running is laughable to me. It's not just tech but the ability to maintain and fix it and run it. The Burn destroyed millions of lives and upended everyone. People couldn't just go back because "back" was not possible, either due to loss of skill, knowledge or just outright trauma and fear.

Pull yourself up by your bootstraps indeed. Spoiler alert, that was use to be said as referring to an impossible task.

That's not how it worked.

Warp travel would have still been happening, just slower cause they would have been limited to fusion power instead of m/am.

Also, the Ferengi were able to keep a portable replicator working in a bronze age civilization, so try again.
Nah, I’m not trying again, because you’re gonna keep moving the goalposts because your hatred for the new shows is clouding your judgment, as you’ve demonstrated time and time again.

Except Star Trek tech does just keep running.

You want proof? Look no further then the civilian grade weather control pillars that kept running for 700 years. Or the Mirror Enterprise that was lodged in a wormhole for nearly 800 years and worked good enough that its captains yaught was able to escape 32nd centuary starships.

And "loss of skill" doesn't really work when computers access exists.

You lose all credibility when you nit-pic just to nit-pic.

We get it, you are not a fan, time to move on.

He has a right to give his opinion. Fateor can review every single episode here if he wants.
Sure, but the rest of us was also have the right to not take a single thing he, or anyone else (ahem) for that matter, seriously when it's clear (and it is) that they're not acting in good faith and are just bashing the show for the sake of bashing of the show. That's not opining, that's whining.

If someone thinks the show isn't good or has problems its not on good faith? How are you deciding that?

So if we lost multiple engineers or mechanics you and I could just step in and fix things just as well?

Star Trek tech has always worked according to plot. Reasonably, it shouldn't keep working.

Sure he can, but everyone else also has the right to call him out on his overt hatred for the show.
Which BTW, has been very obvious even before the first episode aired.

It's one thing to be critical, it's another to just constantly be a total jerk about it.

You of all people, should be well aware of that.

I will confess I was worried that an Academy show would revolve too heavily around teen drama and be entirely inaccessible to a bitter old sod in his mid 30s but it is delightfully not the case.

If this is a worry for you before going in to the episode the staff are a huge focus of it as is rebuilding the Federation. The main cast basically only contains 2 of the young people,. Upgrading Tig Notaro and Oded Fehr from guest stars in Discovery to series regulars was an excellent choice and the Doctor is exactly the same as he always was, Mr Picardo hasn't lost a step.
