Spoilers First Reviews

Still, two seasons of 20 episodes, will give SFA the dubious distinction of being the shortest running Trek show of all time (TAS had 22 episodes, i believe). Unless you count Short Treks, which had 10 episodes overall, and it doesn't look like they'll be doing more (i miss the Shorts, i wish they'd do more )
20 episodes is good enough.

sci fi is very expensive to produce. That's why so many great shows, sadly, have been cut down before their prime. Niche audience, not enough ratings. I find it sad, but it's the truth . I thought Lower Decks and Prodigy would have been cheaper to keep going than live action, but sadly not

Sadly 90% of steaming shows only last a few seasons. Pretty much why I gave up watching anything new in streaming. Too many shows to invest in and then BOOM gone. I personally would just rather watch old shows that were long running that I either never had a chance to watch or saw a long time ago. The steaming era kinda sucks.... 😂

Which is great for me. Watch short seasons and move on. Love the streaming era.

that's one thing i hate about streaming era. Much shorter seasons, and less of them. It's very rare a modern show goes beyond five seasons. Even huge shows like Stranger Things get five seasons, and it took them nearly a decade to come out

There are more TV shows produced today I would think. All the streaming services have original stuff not to mention on air and cable networks. It's too much to keep up with.

I find the time to watch what I like. If a show doesn't grab me, I move on.

There are probably a lot of shows I would like. But I don't like to keep track of a dozen shows a year or two. When they release episodes over such a long period I have to rewatch stuff because it's been so long. I'm at the age now where I can't keep doing that. The runway is getting too short. 😂

Adjusted for inflation a single episode of TNG would have only cost 4 million.

26 episodes is just prohibitively expensive these days for any show featuring extensive visual effects.
That's an illusion.

The more episodes a season a show has the cheaper each episode becomes to produce because you spread the costs for things out across multiple episodes.

That's why most shows have recaps. And I'm sure I'm older than you.

No. Inflation still affects a show's pattern budget, just like it hits all above- and below-the-line costs. You can amortize costs in things like standing sets, not custom VFX that have to be done at the requirements of the script. The days of using stock footage for ship shots is well behind us.

Actually stock VFX are commonly used.

It's only when you need to do full VFX cleanup due to failures on the practical side that things start getting really expensive.
